It's to protect them from lawsuits from stupid people. If they didn't have to worry about that, they'd just put a sticker on it saying, "This thing is serious business. Don't be an idiot.".

I saw a commercial for some drug today that said this: "This medicine may cause death. If you experience this, call your doctor.". LOL

I check my tire pressure and oil too. I thought about just using scowling bravado to keep machinery in line, but if it doesn't work for Special Agent Gibbs (hold on I have the vapors... ok I'm good to finish the post) it's obvious there's no hope for me.

This (OP) reminds me of the warning labels they have included on ladders for the last 20 years or so, which basically add up to tell me that at some point in the past: some naked jerkoff climbed to the top of his ladder and electrocuted himself, then fell off the ladder and impaled his naked ass on a teacup.

A semi-amusing parody: here (http://www.lawhaha.com/label_1.asp).

I installed a new "quiet" garage door opener last year - It's amazing how quiet they are now days. But it had all the same bullshit warnings - I called all my family and let them know I was testing the door, and if they didn't hear from me in a day, to send in the Army to rescue me.

Yes, because required preventative maintenance on your car is exactly the same thing as going out to your garage every month, putting a 1.5 inch item under the door, watching, and saying, "Yup. Still works. Still haven't needed it for anything... but I test it monthly!"

Latrinsorm

If you will, what makes checking tire pressure more "required" than checking a garage door reverse mechanism? Surely they are both preventative measures that are usually unnecessary.

The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. Dumbing things down as much as possible makes most fiscal sense to a business. It reduces your support calls (thus your support staff) and your liability in the case of a lawsuit. It can even increase your sales ('so easy a caveman can do it').

As such the ultimate result of a capitalist society is eventual 'pussification,' as you so eloquently put it.

You've spouted on about how bad capitalism is... in your mind, what's the best economic system to have a country use?

What economic system does a first-world country with the healthiest people, highest life expectancy, lowest children mortality rate, highest education rate, tops happiness indexes, fewest people in prison per capita, lowest unemployment rate, lowest poverty rates...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_percentage_of_population_livi ng_in_poverty
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_unemployment_rate

Capitalism is fine in some ways, and rotten in others. Any system that not just promotes corruption but breeds it is flawed. I'm not sure any country in history has it 100% correct yet. But this money makes money system we have going now is going to take us right into the ground.

Is it any coincidence the countries that did the best in the global economic downturn and rebounded the fastest were the countries that made things rather than innovated the newest banking/trading advances?

The trading system we have in place today was meant for the public to become shareholders in a company they feel should do well and share in its success. What we have turned it into is nothing more than a gambling system where it's possible to win more than you risk if you can write the best trading software.

I'm not sure what a suitable resolution would be but un-exempting all top-governmental positions (congress, president's office, SCOTUS) from insider trading laws would be a good start. Other than that, a hard waiting period between market transactions (say a week), and dissolving all but the most straightforward market strategies (no more hiring MIT mathematics PHDs to devise complex systems that are too confusing to be regulated).

This is all ridiculous to speculate. The only way any of these deeply entrenched ideals would be changed is a complete collapse of the country. In the end, it doesn't matter what I think. It doesn't matter what you think. The only thing that matters is how far the rich can stretch the middle class before revolution.

But just for fun, you should research the correlation between market stability, middle-class prosperity, federal debt, and the tax rates (especially the highest bracket). And by research I don't mean going to whatever conservative rags you read, but downloading the historical tax rate data, the prosperity figures, the debt data, and market data and actually viewing the correlations yourself.

I know it's a lot of work that you can't be bothered with. But I'll just say it's amazing what a population will accept as long as it happens slowly, and how much can be accomplished when you control the media.

All that being said, PB. You're not interested in what I think. You're simply interested in feeling superior to everybody you can. You're not interested in changing your mind on any issue. You're simply interested in taring down people as often as possible. You're not interested in a discussion. You're interested in reinforcing your own ideas.

Just because one can see the problem, doesn't mean one knows the best solution. If the solution were that clear, it would be part of the daily public discourse.

Furthermore, what difference does it make? I could find the perfectly correct answer and it wouldn't matter. Is somebody who can do something about it going to happen upon my post on a GSPlayers forum? Am I going to change the mind of even one person?

The Hammer was too Violent, really?

Yahoo – A Boilermaker is nothing without his hammer.Besides the incredible 67-yard field goal by kicker Carson Wiggs, the highlight of Purdue‘s spring game was the ceremonial passing of the hammer to the latest incarnation of mascot “Purdue Pete.” Officials ordered the makeover last year, in part because the old version apparently frightened the children; his replacement was designed to be “both heroic and approachable,” The new edition also has “a deeper tan to represent more ethnicities” and a full-body suit as opposed to merely a head, allowing females to play what has up to now been all-male role. The New Pete will reportedly lose his trusty sledgehammer, as well, which wasdeemed “too violent” for a mascot — even for a Boilermaker mascot?
