someone catch me up on these orbs?

I guess in my latest vacation from gs I missed something..

orbs and fusion weapons

can someone give me a rundown on this or link to a post about them? I can't seem to find a krakii page about them. Is it just weapons/runestaves? or is there armor?

so it's basically materia right? are they permanent or can you swap em out.. etc
