The good news from the Oscars is that Gasland didn't win. Gasland was the documentary about those people with combustible tap water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ApZkNsXfJE).

It thought Gasland was documentary about how the practice of fracking (a method of extracting natural gas from the ground) is polluting the air and water in rural communities. At least that's what I got from it when I watched it.

Doesn't matter. The real reality is the only thing people know about it, which is the flaming tap water.

I am not disputing the sensationalist appeal of selling a documentary with something as incredible water catching fire but I think you are being a bit hyperbolic when you say it's the only thing people know about the film. Now that it has been nominated it will find an even wider audience. It's been posted as a torrent for over a month so you know all the kids are diggin' it.
I was rooting for Inside Job anyways.

considering rivers in the US have at times become so polluted as to ignite I'd say sensationalizing burning waters isnt necessarily a bad thing.
