So I was up for a promotion at work..I work really hard, enjoy my job, etc..Now I've applied for two different jobs in the past month, and didn't get it again. I was told by the lady that interviewed me that I had done well, but that I needed to be higher up in this department before I got further, and also that I had a good interview.
My big problem is this..I was actually not promoted before..reason?
My dad was sick last year, terminally ill..so we went through all this stuff, because he was sick..we would go to the hospital at 2am because they would think he wouldn't make it through the night, and then he'd come back and be better..but he did pass away on February 9th.
I missed 7 total days over this, and because I was not under FMLA, it went towards occurances at work, which made me not eligible to be promoted. The days counted against me and I had to sign something saying that I wouldn't do this anymore etc..since my father died, I've missed 3 days. 1 was my fathers burial. The other 2 days were because I lost my voice and my doctor recommended it(I had a drs note too), and since I talk on the phone, it wouldn't have worked too well without a voice, huh?..
I objected and got really upset about it, mainly because I was amazed this would count against me, especially since I've done well here, and am always told I'm a good employee.
My review was even really good.
There are people that work with me that do half the work and they get promoted, and it's so frustrating and sad, and I am just upset and sick of it.:(
Man, guess I needed to vent.

Seriously though, that's rough. :( See if you can get Harm to light one of her candles. Those always do the trick.

That really sucks, sometimes people can be so heartless. They should seriously take into account family problems rather than just count anything they want against you. People suck, I'm sorry this happened to you.

I wish I could get across to the people who make the decisions that family should come first. I guess it's always business first, though.
I went out tonight and had a few drinks and watched and sang in a blues jam, so that cheered me up believe it or not..

Ish, Ilvane. I am sorry to hear about the missed promotion. It is always hard to understand why the PTB cannot understand what a hardship it is to lose a close family member. You would think they could put themselves in others' shoes, but the bottom line is all they see most of the time. It is a sad commentary on today's business.
Glad you got out and had some fun. That can do wonders for a blue mood. :)

Maybe it has less to do with your family problems and more to do with someone just doing a better job then you?
Yes I know you could've been a very good employee and have had a good review, but there is still the possiblity that someone did better and was more qualified, had more experience, etc.
Sorry for you either way.

Whether someone else was more qualified or not, I think it's lame that they're counting these kind of absences against you. I can't believe they don't offer some sort of corporate-sponsored bereavement leave... you couldn't even take vacation or sick time for this?
Death of an immediate family member should always be taken extremely seriously by your supervisors. Maybe it's time to take your hardworking self and move to another company where they like people who have a great work ethic and a good family life - those people who make great employees.

The sad sad fact about corporate America is family does not come first, unless it is the family of the person making decisions.
I've been trying to get two people under me promoted for 6 months now. They both have very similar circumstances. One lost her child last year in a car accident, the other lost his mother to cancer within the last year. Both are denied because of the absences. I've promoted them as far as I am able, but in order for them to obtain support or supervisory status they have to get through HR and my superiors. The HR coordinator missed 3 total weeks out of a the year prior to her promotion to coordinator, yet she sites policy each and every time a decision comes before her.
It's just a sad fact that there are very few companies out there that don't have this double standard. More specific to the problem are the people that hold a double standard in positions of authority.
The bottom line in getting ahead is going over someone head and getting noticed, as was my case, sticking it out and going on by years in service, or being a good BSer or ass kisser.
I've seen far too many people promoted that are not qualified simply because they are full of shit and believable or just kiss a mean ass.
This may not be the case in your workplace Ilvane, but I have a rule of thumb. If I'm doing the job and doing it well and if I'm qualified, I'll only tolerate being passed over twice before I find a new job. I’ve just been burned one too many times by waiting for the next time.

If someone had been doing a good job and was promoted to this job, I would feel better, but that isn't really the case the last two times.
I guess life isn't always fair...
Oh well!

Don't you get it, Ilvane? That's what our society has come to: Profit before People. Productivity reigns supreme.
Hopefully, one day, that relationship will change, and we can once again put People before Profit.

::shrug::
The company I work for, I can honestly say, cares about profit AND people. They have made the important connection that the happier and more well-adjusted their employees are, the more long-term benefits (and profit!) the company will realize as a result.
