This week's Jeopardy with the computer "Watson" was pretty interesting. What I particularly liked was Ken Jenning's (of 74 straight win fame) final jeopardy answer:

“I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords,”

LOL I won't edit it, that was weird though. My brain doesn't really get rolling till about 4pm.

I watch Jeopardy normally and enjoyed seeing Watson, but I think Watson was programmed to ring in much too quickly. The guys had little chance to ring in at all. I'm happy that Watson is doing that well, regardless.

There was a slight delay before Watson rang in while he figured out the answer. Jennings took advantage of that by ringing in as fast as possible and then trying to figure out the answer.

Nothing gets by you!

He had a glitch all up in his systems, yo.

Did anyone really think Watson wasn't going to win?

Wouldn't have been impossible.

I thought Watson would lose. Deep Blue lost its first chess match against Kasparov and chess is infinitely easier to program than Jeopardy questions.

There was a bit of luck in it, too. Watson lucked out with some really important daily doubles.

Well that's how Jennings plays, searching for Daily Doubles. It was definitely programmed to look for them, but there was actually an error once where it missed a chance at daily doubles (since daily doubles are heavily weighted towards the bottom of the board): http://arstechnica.com/media/news/2011/02/bug-lets-humans-grab-daily-double-as-watson-triumphs-on-jeopardy.ars

Don't forget the Ross Perot syndrome.

Wonder what would have happened if there was only one Jeopardy contestant.

This... I turned it off like 10 minutes into the first episode.

Watson buzzes in when He knows the answer, which is not all the time and sometimes not fast enough to compete with some players. Unless you want Him to simply not buzz in until He gives the other players an opportunity (and if you do, you're retarded, that's not how Jeopardy! is played) there is nothing wrong with this method.

And the machine has to actually press the buzzer with mechanical device. They said it's actually pretty close because while Watson's reactions are faster than a human if he know the answer he can't anticipate the buzzer like a human can.

I'm really glad I didn't miss them, watching what folks can do now with computers is amazing. And yeah, Ken Jennings' addition to his Final Jeopardy question was awesome...as was Watson letting us know that Toronto is now a US city. It was just a matter of time before the US began invading Canada!

I was disappointed with Jenning's final answer. A real cop out to humanity. He should have answered "Who is John Connor".
