Trying to maximize my cman defenses. Already planning on getting cunning defense, but after that, is it worthwhile to get 1 rank in various cmans for defensive purposes against bandits, grimswarm, etc (ie: disarm, feint, subdual strike)? The first rank is always the cheapest. What type of benefit will it give me? Or am I better off just mastering a single cman to maximize my defense against it and take my lumps from the others? Thanks for any advice.

What profession?

If you plan on hunting almost any of the higher areas, you should get 5 ranks of disarm.

Each rank of a maneuver will give you +15 cman defense against that maneuver. If you don't have any good cman options available to you, training defensively is an excellent choice. 2-3 cman points for 15 defense is very worth it.

Disarm is also always a good choice.

Profession is Ranger. I am also not too concerned about disarm (at least not moreso than other maneuvers). The character is an archer, so between an arrow in the right hand and only using a 4x or 5x bow, disarm is not really a threat to my gear. Although it is possible I might be killed after being disarmed, it also seems roughly as likely that I will be killed by bandits that subdue me then feint me into offensive.

Thanks Droit. +15 per rank on defense was just what I was looking for. That definitely makes the first rank or two (and cheapest) of a few CMANs seem worthwhile.

Yeah, we rangers have shit CM options. Almost everything I have is for defensive purposes. Don't write off disarm just because you're an archer, though. One, even if you walk around with an arrow in hand, you can still easily get your bow disarmed after each shot, which loses you a lot of defense. But almost more importantly, disarm can give up to 20 seconds of RT if you fail hard enough. It's the only maneuver with that kind of RT that we can train defensively. Even if you don't care about losing your gear, 20 seconds is very dangerous.

I think it's +3 per rank and when you have 5 ranks you get +15 total.

No, that's cunning defense. I was talking about training in feint for feint defense.
