Are you playing WoW and Starcraft on this or do you want to run cutting edge FPS? If the latter you can get something on the low end of your range and have plenty of machine.

• 12GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
• 1TB RAID 0 (2 x 500GB SATA HDDs) - performance
• 2GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 420 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]
• No speakers

WoW and everything Microsoft Office Professional. Itunes. Approximately a gazillion baby pictures, printer and fax software. Various logitech accessories. Thats it.
Don't spend more than 800 bucks.

Single video card and its the weakest part of the machine.
Newegg had some better specs for the price but the reviews of the PC's there made me go back to looking at dell and HP. I'm happy with what I got for just barely over $1k.

No catch. I used it to buy a $280 monitor and waited the full 6 months before paying it. The only thing is that if you don't pay it you get charged like 24% retroactive interest but that shouldn't be a concern.

BillMeLater was purchased by Paypal which could be either a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. I like and use Paypal a lot so I trust them. It's not really credit, per se -- it's a one-off credit account as opposed to a loan or revolving credit line like a retail card or something.
iBuypower computers are baller. I am typing this post on one right now that I bought two years ago for $800 and similar computers were selling for 50% more from other manufacturers. The parts aren't used. The Best Buys and Dells of the world are just way too large, inefficient, and have too much market power to price products very low.

One downside I will say, I bought the ex's laptop( READ LAPTOP) from ibuypower, and had huge issues after about 6 months, and it was a very low-use machine (few hours a day). Ended being sent back and forth like 3 times because they couldnt fix the problem. Just over a year from purchase, it was dead. :(
I hate laptops, so, read into that as well.
Be adventurous, build your own, if I did it, pretty much anyone can!

Call me another vote for Cyberpower - I got this system off Newegg at the beginning of the month:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229242&cm_re=2600k-_-83-229-242-_-Product
They have a few similar like it in stock - if you are not a tech genius and would just rather get a pre built Newegg is a pretty good option. Shipping was only like 30 bucks and I got the system in 2 business days all ready to go.

This x2. Just got done building a system with this. 4.5Ghz stable overclock in about 10 minutes of work. Went with a SSD as the OS drive and a 2TB WD Black as the storage, hold my games drive, dual Nvidia 450s(they were $99 each) and 8GB of RAM.
I was able to use the supply and case from my previous machines so that shaved off about $300 in costs.
But they are cheap!

I need to buy a new computer now as well. Unfortunately due to the Sandy Bridge fuckup and Bulldozer not coming out until.. May (I think?) I have to purchase one while the prices are still up but expected to drop drastically (for the hardware I would purchase today) when both of those products drop on the market.
But it's always like that, I guess. Bleh.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4142/intel-discovers-bug-in-6series-chipset-begins-recall
This is not a fully accurate statement.
Many of the motherboards with this chipset have SATA 3.0 ports which are not affected. If you are only using a small number of SATA devices you can use the SATA 3.0 ports until the mfg can do the exchange.
I know for a fact Gigabyte will be exchanging motherboards at the end of April or into May. So if you buy the board from a reputable vendor you will get a replacement. I think Newegg however pulled all these boards from being for sale as did other vendors.
If you can start to buy everything you need between now and May you should be fine.
Here is newegg's statement:
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you. Newegg has recently become aware of a design issue that is affecting recent models of Intel Sandy Bridge platform motherboards. We are working with Intel to identify the exact nature of this problem.
As always, Newegg remains 100% committed to our customers' total satisfaction. In keeping with our commitment to our customers, we are extending the return period for your motherboard by 90 days or until replacements become available from the manufacturer, whichever is greater. Intel expects to have a new revision of the P67 & H67 chipsets out around April, at which point first-run motherboards with this issue will need to be physically replaced in affected systems.
From a technical standpoint, the design issue can be bypassed fairly simply by not using the Serial ATA (SATA) ports that are affected. Your motherboard’s manual should identify your SATA ports by number, and at a minimum you should see ports 0-5 (6 ports in total) listed. Ports 0 and 1 are Sata Rev. III (6Gbps), and do not appear to be affected by this problem. Ports 2-5 are SATA Rev. II (3Gbps) and should not be used. For a thorough explanation of this hardware work-around, please refer to our video on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJcE2alQPvY
If you choose to use the hardware work-around option, there is no need to contact us at this time. We have your information on record and will email you as soon as the replacements become available. If you would like to discuss this with our tech community or read up on the latest updates, please visit our EggXpert forum:
http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/682006.aspx
If none of the above options are suitable to your needs and you wish to return the board at this time for a full refund, please email us at intelsandybridge@newegg.com and include your sales order number so we can help you out with your return.
If you have any concerns, please contact Newegg Customer Service for further information and assistance.
Thank you for your support!

Your Newegg.com Customer Service Team

Yeah, I would go with a Phenom x4 970 BE or an Intel Core i7 860'ish and a 6800 series AMD GPU, (190-200 dollar range, whatevers the best bang for the buck, haven't really looked into it yet.) Decent amount of ram too. And a good price/performance SSD with Trim.
For what she's trying to do with it. A little bit of headroom but not overkill.

I think they did, I haven't checked. Tigerdirect hasn't and neither has Microcenter.
Edit: Scratch that. As of last night neither place had taken them down and were just offering refunds. As of now TD has changed a LGA1155 search to be auto changed to 1156. Maybe if you have some links from there you could still order.
Additional Edit: Buy.com still has some listed. But check into the return policy on it. Lots of people have been buying them and then contacting CS and they are just getting their money refunded and told to buy something else when it is out. But you are talking 3 months from now.

Go up a few posts, I posted all the hardware I was going to get. I'm wondering why the DIY kits are so much cheaper than mine though...
EDIT: Ah, mines a better chipset, more ram, and way better drive.

Though it's becoming less of an issue, since the Antec 300 case mounts the power supply at the bottom, make sure the power supply's MB power lead is long enough to route properly around any add-in cards (video, etc) and still reach the MB power connector. This is especially important if you want your cabling to be tidy. If messy cabling doesn't matter to you, then disregard the bullshit I just said.

I'm considering the antec p193..

It looks.. imposing.. like, darth vader, or something.
EDIT: Doesn't come with a power supply so, I've chosen this and I'll disconnect all the ricer lights. Unfortunately ditching the antec which I usually use.

I buy Thermalright cpu coolers exclusively. I don't think newegg sells them.
I can get by on the 120GB ssd for a while, then I'll throw in a cheapo 7200rpm TB drive.
OS will be Ubuntu (free), Win7.

My thoughts.
555d3 - good reviews. Cant find anything bad about it.
Phenom - meh.
X4 - mid range.
4GB - here I have my doubts but I figure I can get more when i want. Also my old Asus did pretty much awesome on 4GB but it was a laptop so I dont know.
DDR3 - preferred based on reviews.
500GB - mid range but I think enough for me.
Radeon Card - Good card.
Case is average.

Hard drive capacity is not a performance measure.
Your Asus laptop, depending on how old it was, probably didn't have DDR3 1333 RAM. Again, how much of something is less important than how good it is.
I think a friend of mine has that PC (it's an iBuypower in the same case around the same price, anyway) and I've never heard any complaints.

02-18-2011, 10:36 PM
Yeah. When I realized there were quality desktops that would do what I wanted without maxing my budget I started looking toward the lower end of my range. Have you had problems with AMD in the past?
Warriorbird
02-18-2011, 10:52 PM
The only AMD chip I'd go with right now by choice would be a Fusion netbook. With that said, Sandy Bridge got almost entirely recalled, so Intel's not impressing lately either.

Nah, was just wondering. My last desktop had an AMD it was pretty sweet, awesome overclocking capability. Though this was back when 90nm cores were the shit. :(

For the price, I love the AMD processors. I think I've prosthelytized about them before, but dollar to performance, you can't beat AMD.
The last two desktops I built were both with Phenom processors. Somewhere around here there's a thread where PB built a new gaming PC (his aims were a bit higher end than yours, though) and he wound up with a Cyberpower-built PC with an AMD processor. I think he's been happy with it?
If I weren't so lazy, I'd find one of the previous 'I'm building a new PC' threads where Clove laid out the Tom's Hardware guides, which help you assemble a system in your budget range.
Androidpk
02-18-2011, 10:56 PM
Yes there was a recall issue but Intel performance has never been an issue, all of their CPUs that have come out since their dual cores first appeared have been pretty awesome. If I were to buy a desktop right now I'd probably go with an i5.

Sorry, Clove liked the Ars System Guides. Here's the latest I could find:
September 2010 Edition (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/guides/2010/09/the-ars-system-guide-september-2010-edition.ars)
Some previous threads:
Nuadhja building a system in October 2009 (http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=46617)
Revalos building a system in December 2009 (http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=48548)
PB building a gaming rig in March 2010 (http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=50402)
Anything older isn't that helpful... even the 2009 stuff is way dated, but you'll see some links to sites that keep their stuff up to date, like Tom's Hardware.
Good luck!

There's upgrade options and what not included in the guide too.
There's going to be a sharp decline in prices on the mid-range to low-range systems here shortly. Enough so that I've decided not to pull the trigger on building a gaming rig.
Sandforce 2500 and Gen 3 SSD's are coming out in a few months, Sandy Bridge is due back, and AMD's next gen cpu Bulldozer is slated in a month or two as well.
With all that competition its definitely going to drive down prices.

It's adequate, mobile and pretty. The 892 does not appear to be affected by the Sandy Bridge malfunctions. The machine is alot of bang for the buck. Most importantly I called Toshiba and their customer service is fabulous. The warranty and customer service was a must for me. I'll try to remember to updated this thread with how the laptop is actually working when I get it. Should be here next week some time.
Newegg reviews, Amazon reviews, cyberpowerpc.com, PB's construction thread, this thread and most importantly THIS WEBSITE ---> http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html were my 2011 crash course computer class.

I'm confused as to why you got a laptop like that. The whole point of a laptop is to be mobile and those aren't exactly mobile. Not to mention you're paying more for something you could have gotten for less with a desktop. Not to mention the horrible upgradability.

This is a partial cut and paste because I'm sick of telling the story.
I got an asus g73... I called Toshiba about the status of my order and they actually used these words "There are some problems in China". I was like NO FUCKING SHIT DA COMMUNITS. And then what I really said was, "May I please speak to someone about a full refund and thank you for your help."
Then in quick consecutive order.
1)Drive Best Buy.
2)Hello Manservant point me to the nearest quality gaming machine.
3)PURCHASE ASUS G73/Warranty
4)Success?

Buying a warranty is a good way to completely nullify all of the research that went into getting the best parts for the price.
4a6c1
03-03-2011, 02:58 PM
My thought process was that other machines with the same parts are being rated at 2100 and above. Asus is a decent product. My last one was Asus but I wanted to try something new. That didnt happen. The graphics card is number 12 on my list. Processor speaks for itself. Geek Squad warranty is ok I guess. Actually buying the geek squad warranty will put it at the same price as the toshiba without a warranty. Less bloatware than my last asus and faster on startup.
Are you worried about a specific part? I have heard bad things about the seagate stuff. And I did have problems with my internal modem on the last one. We'll see I guess.
Bobmuhthol
03-03-2011, 03:15 PM
ASUS is much better than Toshiba in general. I would not expect a hard drive to fail with proper maintenance, and Seagate manufactures the most hard drives so they will naturally have the highest number of failures. That said, I do prefer Western Digital. If you have a modem, though, you don't need a fast computer (did you mean NIC?). That is not a real issue, though; NICs die all the time.
4a6c1
03-03-2011, 03:45 PM
Maybe I ment the NIC, I'm really not sure. Something connected with the wireless driver in the last machine was not updated consistently - the company stopped making updates - and the (isolated) malfunction grew progressively worse until my last year of use when it failed entirely. I had to use cables for internet after that. And of course I did nothing. I'm neglectful of my machines, I dont upkeep them. I'm suprised they havent formed a rebellion against me. I just bought a Nook with some political text inside. Maybe now they have a leader. UH OH.
