Fucking awesome thing just happened.

About noon today, a fucking ninja (least racist term I can muster right now) kicked our door in and made off with my laptop, Multiple TV's and the Xbox...and my change jar...

It could have been much worse but the racket woke my room mate from upstairs and he chased the dude out. Unfortunately, my room mate is damn near blind and didn't have his contacts in so he couldn't read the license plate. He's really fucking lucky I wasn't home instead of my room mate cause he'd be in the hospital for sure.

As if it isn't bad enough that we're nearly broke as is. Basically all my business is conducted from my laptop so now I've lost a large portion of what I was making to pay the rent. I'm so mad right now I could put a hole in my wall! Soon enough I'll be so poor I'll have to kick in peoples houses to take their valuables and sell them for crack money. FCUK!

The only upside is that the police said that most situations like that the robbers try to pawn the stuff and when they run the serial numbers they'll get nabbed. I'm not getting my hopes up but I would really love to have that shit back...and a chance to hurt that man...well, that guy...he's obviously not worthy of being a man.

Oh, and what other ways besides serial numbers can we think to track these things? Is there a way I can trace the laptop if it becomes active on wi-fi?

Did you have LoJack?

And that sucks, man. I'm sorry.

There is software you can install on your computer to make it trackable in the case of it getting stolen.. unfortunately you have to install it all before the bad shit happens, obviously.

On top of keeping an eye on the pawnshop, keep an eye on your local craigslist too and see if he tries to sell through there.

Sucks that this happened. It is nice, though, to see that you can channel your obvious and justifiable anger away from hateful stereotypes. Just because one Japanese guy stole your stuff doesn't mean all Japanese guys are criminals. But I am a bit surprised he wanted your inferior electronics.

He was likely a time travelling coin collector that managed to track down a rare coin to your particular moment in the continuum . He only took the other stuff to make it look like a simple robbery.

I wonder if the robber (ninja) needed the change jar because he was visiting his new girlfriend this weekend...

How blind is blind? How long did it take for the entire robbery to commence. Has your roommate shown, I guess, obvious symptoms of his blindness around your residence? Do you have older surveillance footage of wherever it is you live? Has there been a history of robberies in your neighborhood where the same kick was used? What sort of items were stolen? Have you had gatherings at your house with ninjas? Has your blind roommate, while you weren't there, had encounters with ninjas, or people possibly associated with ninjas? (PPAWN.)

Size of the largest object stolen. Weight of the heaviest object stolen? Did your roommate see what was used to haul off your stuff? What's traffic usually like on the main roads when this happened? Was the robber armed? With what? Any other objects that weren't stolen but rummaged through? What did these objects (dressers, bags in closets, etc.) look like afterwards? Have you received any quality of life questionnaires from the Police Department that investigated (and I really hope is continuing to investigate) this? Could your roommate discern clothing labels, shoe-laces, dominant hand, or a particular gait? How well do you know your roommate?

I have other questions, but they'd be more personal, so, I dunno.

The change jar sort of makes me think it is my friend justin, circa 1998. Are you living in 1998, because if so, I think I know who did it.

Wow, it had to be a ninja. There is just NO way a black man could've kicked in the door, stole multiple tv's, a laptop AND a change jar before your roomate woke and went flailing blindly down the stairs. Additionally, ninjas know when it's best to strike, thus attacking when your roomate was most useless.

Honestly, though, it sucks. I wish you the best recovering your laptop and other items. If nothing else, make a renter's insurance claim and get some sort of value back for it in return. You did the hard part already and filed a police report.

Was I racially insensitive? Sorry...black or hispanic.

Or white.

Stan, I like the way you think, you seem to have a pretty good grasp of the situation and you could be close to cracking this case. However. There are known knowns and there are known unknowns, but there are also unknown unknowns, things that we don't know that we don't know. For all we know Ruty's room mate could have killed Ruty and then hopped onto his laptop and posted this, just to fuck with our heads.

Hey guys,
If this was posted in the "things that made me frown today thread", the resulting posts would have ended up in the other similar thread.

Lets see if I could answer some things.

I'm alive. It's not my roommate typing...or so you think...
We were actually looking at renter's insurance yesterday and were deciding on a plan today. Funny how that works...so we weren't covered.
Um...roommate is pretty blind without his glasses.

He said it was a 6'1" to 6'3" African American Gentleman, skinny and startled easily when he saw that my roommate was actually in his room sleeping. He, unfortunately, didn't wake the roommate until he went upstairs and into his room.

Room mate said he chased him down and out to the car but couldn't read the plates. Gold/Champagne color new style Honda. Accord or Civic.

I did miss spell FUCK and Saw it but decided that I was appropriately angry enough not to care.

40" TV is the biggest/heaviest item.

I've known my room mate for 5ish years. I'd trust him with my life. Obviously, I can't trust him to tackle a strange black man stealing our stuff.

I don't know if he was armed but I highly doubt it given the nature of his retreat. Should JP have had his glasses on...or should it have been me the Gangstar awoke. We would have made the nightly news. Cause either he or I would have sustained serious injuries.

ah yes, and pawnshops are our best bet. I'll be scoping Craigslist and Ebay over the next few weeks to see but the cops say the ninja's usually try to pawn the wares and that pawnshops have to run the serial number to see if the items are stolen. Does that mean they do it? Cop seemed 100% on it but that doesn't mean it will really happen.

If they do and the serial number pops then the pawnshop will alert the police.

They say that's our best bet because they weren't able to pull fingerprints and the shoe prints are the best they have to go on.

I know this doesn't help much Ruty but you're business shouldn't fail much as long as you have access to a vehicle. The Universities usually open early in the morning and stay open until late at night, and there is no time limit to use their computers usually so as long as you pack a lunch and snacks and such you can remain there for literally like 10 hours. You may actually find yourself getting more work done this way than you did on your own system. lol.

Buy gps trackers and put them on everything you own. I put gps trackers on spare change. Not that anyone might steal it. But I know no idiot would take something with a matrix ear bug looking thing attached to a dime or a cig. And batteries, lots of batteries.

SB, I've been investigated the last time my car got broken into. At the time you lived right near me. And I have a blind sister. You keep using the word "blind". Must have been you. I thought you'd be smart though and hit the open trunk button instead of taking my case of CDs and throwing them into the closest puddle. I mean, come on. You already jacked me CDs. Then you throw them into a puddle? Dum theeves. Open trunk next time fools. Renters insurance FTW.

It's better to just rub your balls on everything you own, and leave a note tacked to your door saying you did so.

I was actually looking at rents policies on Feb 3rd.
The roommate and I were going to decide on one when I got back from lunch and he woke up.
Ninja kicked in the door while I was at lunch.

CURSES!

Oh. And it sucks that aggregation doesn't usually (specifically) follow the professional criminal on the investigation level, let alone tactical (intelligence? rofl) if the crime isn't on the news. Whatever that means. I totally don't know what that means. Also, we live in a just world.

Move along. Nothing to see here.

Also, Ruty, look at it this way. All the macho stuff aside, it could have been much worse for you and your room mate. One of you could be dead right now. The guy could have had a gun, you could have spooked him by confronting him, he could have thought there was no other escape so he could have shot you or you room mate to get out of the situation. It happens all the time. Though you would have been brave to confront the guy, it doesn't always go the way you wish it would. So keep that in mind, sure some of your stuff got stolen, and that sucks. But material things can be replaced, your Life is a different thing all together.

SuckerFish

Also, you may want to look into getting some better locks on your door if he was able to kick it in while you guys were sleeping. That probably took him one try if you didn't hear it right away.

Or.....get a big giant dog and let it sleep in the room by the door. Preferably a pit bull or something of that nature. Dogs can sense danger. Plus, they bark when they hear noise. So either way you are bound to be alerted before they get anything and the dog may just attack him if it feels threatened. Dogs do come in quite handy if you can be there to take care of them.

SuckerFish
02-06-2011, 07:48 AM
Or, if you want to go the cheaper route, since alarm systems are expensive, you can buy a baby monitor system and keep one of the sound devices next to your door, and you can purchase a gun for yourself so that if it happens again, not only will you hear it if you keep the monitor device in your room, but you will have a weapon yourself when you confront the guy. Most people will give up or run when they see a gun pointed at them. The stupid ones will come forward at you to try and take the gun from you. By that point hopefully the trigger would have been pulled.

That text is epic.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions Sucker. We're in the process of most of that. Considering cash is not something either of us have right now, we're going with what the landlord will fix. His carpenter is going to come reconstruct the door, reinforce it with steel and get one of those locks that encompasses the handle and deadbolt as well as leans over the outer part of the frame.

You are right it could have been worse. If my roommate hadn't startled him he would have gotten off with a lot more. And someone could have died, however, I would give me the edge considering I'm a trained War Vet and he's a skinny ass crack addict that ran from my rather fat roommate. At the very least I would have been able to read his plates. It's more than likely it would have made the news though, like that guy that sliced a robber in two with a samurai sword.

He'd have had to been really quick on the draw and I had home court advantage. It's really irrelevant at this point but he was definitely casing the place for a while before that and watched me leave that morning as he likely broke in right as I pulled out of the drive. I'd even give odds that he'll be back in the neighborhood again soon casing another place. I'll just be on high alert from now on.

Actually, he took my roommates Xbox but left mine. Took his controllers too but not mine.

That saves still there.

Guess he figured his new home entertainment center was good with the brand new Xbox and two out of four controllers.

Kind of after the fact, but you guys still should get renter's insurance - usually an easy, cheap peace of mind thing. Doesnt usually cost much for what it can cover.

Plus here's a little tip, if one of you drives (and hopefully has car insurance), a lot of insurance companies will give you a discount for carrying 2 policies with them. That discount can in turn often pays for most if not all the renter's insurance cost. Just something to check out maybe.
