So, in my last 2 months of the Marines Corps, I have been placed on guard. Well, running guard, so I don't anything except watch TV and play games. Not so bad!

Anyways, I just finished Dragon Age, and all the DLC and the expansion. I've already beaten Starcraft 2, and I'm tired of Empire: Total War and Napoleon Total War. Same goes for Dawn of War 2, Company of Heros, all the Red Factions, Saints Row 2, and others....

So, anyone ran across any good PC games? I'm mostly looking for RPGs and Strategy Games...

Mass Effect 2 if you missed that -

Otherwise Divinity II is surprisingly fun for an rpg if you like large worlds, exploring and not a lot of hand holding (think Gothic 2 - 3).

I have been playing an old school indy game called Avernum 6 - kind of like an isometric party builder game but you need to be graphics blind to play these games. You can check out the demo free on the site (avernum.com)

Maybe pick up a DS or a DS emulator and check out 999 (I forget the name - its like 9 people 9 doors 9 hours or something) its a strategy / suspense / rpg type game with a lot of dialogue and a bunch of endings - more a story than a game but I got hooked and dumped like 6 - 8 hours into it easily.

If you like old school games or stuff off emulators I can probably come up with more suggestions, let me know.

Got Mass Effect 2. Don't want to cheat on my XBox though by playing it on my laptop. I had heard some bad things about Divinity 2, but I guess I'll check it out.

I have to go soon, so I went ahead and got Neverwinternights 2.

I looked at Dead Space 2, I want to get that on Console though. My TV is badass.

Rift looks cool. MMORPG. Some have compared it to Warhammer and WoW. I was given a registration key to play but I haz no thyme. The rumormill is setting up the negatives as lack of content, extremely linear questing and the other normal beta problems. Positives: outstanding graphic quality and character creation.

have you tried the Elder Scrolls: Morrowind? It's kind dull at first, but once you get into it, it's great. Just like GS it requires a good bit of travel time but is extremely expansive.

You should check out Drakensang: River of Time .. released by a german company I think.. it's pretty good. similar to divinity II (if you havent checked it out, check that out too) A bit slow in the beginning, but once you understand a bit more, it becomes more fun.

Also, the settlers 7 is fun, and surprisingly cities XL 2011 is pretty neat.

Been playing it the past few days and it's fun as shit. Pre-ordered our copies tonight. The rift invasions are probably my favorite part, and if they stay as constant as they are now there will never be a need for grinding. Also, lol at lack of content. It's beta, lvl cap is something like 30 and you only get a small part of the map.

Graphics are ok - really like how the plantlife is scaled to your character unlike a lot of other games, the environment is dynamic.

Insofar as other beta problems, i'm extremely impressed with the Rift staff because shit is getting fixed left and right, pretty immediately too. Pretty much as soon as the problem crops up, they're putting out a patch to fix it.

Loved the entire Europa Universalis series, Sins of a Solar Empire is fun, might reinstall that actually. I have settlers 7 but my Internet connection through my phone is unreliable at best so I can't play that so much, DRM and all.

Thank you all for your suggestions and recommendations. This should hopefully keep me busy for the next month.

Rift is freaking amazing. My brother and I are totally down for it. We're preordering! I love you and your beta key.

The ability to customize a character with the different roles and keep swapping up feels pretty good. I took my cleric to 28 and was able to try out a focus in 5 of the 8 souls this morning to get a better feel for how they played.

As far as I've seen, the game is by far the most polished, bug-free, content filled, option open game pre or near launch.

What's so good about rift? It looks like a standard WoW clone complete with overdone sparkly effects for each and every attack. I would love to see a MMO come out that actually does something different. Only thing on the horizon that actually looks to do something new is Guild Wars 2.

I hated that. A lot. They are real good about taking out the stupid, tedious shit though. Like the vehicle missions from the first one. I heard, through interviews, that they won't be taking out scanning, but they'll be making it a lot less necessary.

I'm teaming up with a RL buddy and my bro, I'm pretty sure we're going to hit up a PVP/RP server. I ended up on Harrow instead of Deepwood because of all the issues I had logging in during the first hour of Beta5. It was at the top of the list and wasn't absolutely jam packed with people =/

I haven't played WoW but I've played EQ1, EQ2 and DAOC. You can't really revolutionize an MMO and still call it an MMO. That being said, it feels like they've managed to steal every good idea and come up with some new ones.

What I like:
-Each character has 1 class (Warrior, Rogue, Cleric, Mage) and each class can have access to 8 souls. The souls have a different focus and you can pick 3 of them to train in. Then in each soul, there's a skill tree you put points into. So there's a limitless amount of ways to train/customize what you want to play. Adding to the confusion of explaining this are "roles" which are essentially saved templates of a 3 soul compilation. You can swap off between roles in a few seconds. Meaning mid-fight/raid/pvp, you can swap off from being a tank to DPS to healer.
-Probably old news to WoW players but the really well done scripted quest events
-Public groups are easier to just pick up and fight with rather than asking and trying to talk people to do X,Y,Z
-The area Rift events pretty much pull everyone into the action. Not responding to it can cause some pretty annoying issues with enemies taking over your safe spots
-The ability to just hop into the PVP warfront things instantly from anywhere. Not needing to run to somewhere, finding it empty and hauling ass back

There's a lot of other small things.

Gelston
01-30-2011, 11:32 AM
How is the party loot system? Is it need/greed, a roll for everyone, or whoever loots first?

Loyrl
01-30-2011, 04:03 PM
There is a need greed pass that comes up, I haven't done any dungeons yet but I assume that eventually it will only allow people that need it that are able to use it. The rift are pretty cool, and are easy to get groups for (a pop up shows up at the top of your screen saying Join Public Party) and everyone gets something for participating.

Boooo. A friend of mine rolled on a PVP server and he said that it's easier to grief people in Rift than it was in Aion, and it was easy as hell in Aion. It's because you can just camp where they spawn because the guards don't do enough damage. Hopefully they'll change that for launch for those of you on a PVP server. But yeah, after the debacle that was Aion, i've been totally turned off towards open PVP. And if it's easier to grief here, nooooo thanks lol.

And yeah pretty much everything he said - roles/souls are awesome for character customization - you can basically have four characters total, but be able to play every single class with those four characters. (and there's like 230492834098 classes per archetype).

I did the same thing today...ordered a new system. I'll be on the Sunrest server with about a dozen guys from the IT shop at work. It is a PVP-RP server if you are interested in getting a guild up.

As for those that don't like the PVP aspect of gaming, I can totally understand. But I was reading today that at end game you start to earn prestige points and fame points (or something like that) and it is based on PVP. Of course, I think they are looking for more PVP as faction against faction (Guardians against Defiants) and warfronts. You can also tear open a rift in enemy territory and have your buddies flood it and fuck some people up...

Anyway, they were saying that like in most games, certain gear is limited to the level of the character. But they are also creating some of the most powerful gear that can only be worn by those with high fame and prestige (or whatever they are calling it).

Food for thought.

I don't dislike PVP. I dislike open PVP where caps grief lower lvls non-stop and prevent them from getting shit done. Unfortunately it was rampant in Aion because the game was so terribly unbalanced.

The only solution to a true free and open PVP system from becoming corrupted is to implement a system where people can only co exist with other people outside of towns and such (which should be regulated) within the range of other people who are either 5 levels above them or 5 levels below them. In the regulated areas/towns and such they can co exist with everyone.

This could be divided by a system of portals. In other words, if you want to go out of town to do anything, then you would have to go through one of the portals that would only allow people within your range of 5 levels above and 5 below to go through. There, when you guys arrive, you could swat each others brains out.

That's a dumb idea.

No it isn't actually because it is a doable one. If the cap for the level system is 100, then you could have 10 portals All together. Each portal..starting from level 1-10, etc., would bring those level ranges to a certain World or "Area" in the game. They could do quests there, but also do pvp there. The way people would be forced to go back to town would be to implement a system where in order to level up you HAVE to go back to town to do so. This would prevent people from remaining in the designated areas when they had already reached passed the required level to be in them.

So in other words, a level 11 would never have the chance to remain in the level 1-10 realm because they would have been forced to go back to town where the portals are to the designated areas in order to level up and then by doing so they would have eliminated the possibility of ever returning through the levels 1-10 portal.

But like I said, in town, in the regulated areas, all levels could mingle.

I still don't like it. For RvR the best way I've seen, including full PvP games, is to have the low level areas far from the "borders" so that opposing factions have to get through all the higher level character before they can get close to the low level guys. There are a few games that use this model. It works. I'm happy with it, and it's a lot more "realistic"
