Anyone trying this game out? It's in closed beta right now. I'm playing on the Deepwood (lolololololol) server. It's my first beta event but so far i'm loving the interface (not really gonna start playing much until J gets home from work tonight). Much better than the last attempt at a new mmo (debacle) which was FFXIV.
If you need a VIP beta key to come try it out, use this one. It should have like 20 more uses.

Go to https://account.RIFTgame.com/ to set up an account, then apply that code to your account. The next beta event starts (20 mins ago), and you should get an invite for it pretty soon after you apply that code. That will allow you to then download the client and patch it, which only takes about an hour. Or at least, it did when I downloaded it. Since beta is going on right now, it might take a bit longer.

Beta 6 Invitations
Happy Groundhog day!
It's that time again, and the first round of Beta 6 invitations has been sent! We will continue sending them throughout the course of the event to do our best to catch anyone who was late applying a VIP or pre-order code to their account.
We will also be providing regular updates here and on our social networks.
Edit: Beta 6 invitations are running a little slower than normal, but we're still on track to get emails sent to pre-order and VIP key holders before the event starts..

So that code posted in my OP still works. If you try it and it says it has no more uses let me know, I will post Justin's. His should have a bunch of uses left. Also, here's the e-mail I got about this weekend's beta event:
Congratulations! You’ve been selected to participate in this weekend’s RIFT™ beta event!
The RIFT beta continues this weekend with the next beta event, Planar War, which is set to begin Friday, Feb. 4, 2011 at 10:00 AM PST (18:00 GMT), and run through 10:00 AM (18:00 GMT) on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011.
RIFT Stress Test
Saturday, Feb 5, 2011,12:00 PM – 2:00PM PST
We’ve had heaps of players in the RIFT beta, and we’re really proud of how the shards are holding up. We think they can handle pretty much whatever we throw at them... so let’s throw more stuff! We’re hosting a special “Bring Down the House” event this Saturday to see just how much they can handle. The proverbial gauntlet has been thrown down and to make it worth your while, we’ll be giving away 100 In-Game Prize Packs, and an Nvidia GTX 460 video card. All you have to do is play for the duration of the event.
Bring it. We dare you. Because seriously, the riftspawn were saying some pretty rude things about all your moms.
Follow these instructions to join this beta event:
Sign into your Trion Worlds account.
Click the "Download Client" link from your account page.
Run the installer and follow the directions.
Run the Patcher: Navigate to where you installed RIFT in the START menu and click the PLAY RIFT shortcut. Enter the Email Address and Password used for your Trion Worlds account and log in.
PLEASE NOTE: If you already have the RIFT beta client installed, just log in and update. There’s no need to download again.
As you play RIFT, make sure to visit the beta forums and tell us what you think.
Planar War
Telara is left in chaos as the elemental planes force their way into physical reality. The armies of Earth, Water, Air, Fire, Life, and Death launch devastating invasions through the rifts opening across the land. Beat back the invasions and eliminate the planar blight that erodes this once-prosperous world.
Play to Win!
Seal any rift and receive planar loot and you could be eligible to win an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card! Terms and conditions apply, click here for details. And In-Game Prize Packs will be given away to ten (10) select players who complete the objective!
For more information on the RIFT beta and future events, visit www.RIFTgame.com/beta.
Don’t forget, we need your feedback!
You have two ways to send us your feedback: in the beta forums or by using the in-game feedback button.
FEEDBACK IN THE BETA FORUMS
Go to the START menu where you installed RIFT and click the RIFT Forums shortcut. This should launch your web browser to the forum where you can sign in and find instructions for posting feedback. The beta forums are a special section of the RIFT forums visible only to participants of the beta event. You'll have access to the beta forums from the beginning of the beta event and continuing for 48 hours past the end of the event. You can also access the forums directly at http://forums.riftgame.com/.
FEEDBACK IN THE GAME
While in the game world, click the feedback "?" button located near the MENU button at the bottom left of the game screen. Enter your comments and press SEND.
We read all feedback and value your comments.
We look forward to seeing you in Telara!

So what classes have you folks found most interesting?
I didn't care at all for any of the fighter souls and the rogue ones felt like button smashing events. Cleric and Mage are the most appealing to me. The spell range felt huge and pulling mobs was very easy with them.
From what I've seen thus far, a necro/whatever/whatever (I hated dom) will be where I start out.
Cyprion
02-07-2011, 02:48 PM
I was only able to get to lvl 15, but enjoyed cleric/shaman/justicar. Was able to self buff nicely and pull from ranged with a bolt spell then melee it down. While using a shield spell and heal if needed. I tried other combos of warrior and mage and didn't like them as much, granted then only got to level 8 or so.
Drisco
02-07-2011, 04:24 PM
I was Sabetour/Ranger/Riftstalker

I like the ranger and assassins. Did Fae last night and it was pretty rough, we were all lvl 18 and the tank didn't live to long on the first boss fight, so one of the guys switched out to his 26 cleric tank and after that it went pretty smooth. Not sure if it was the healers fault or the tanks.

My husband has been playing since Beta 1 and I joined in at Beta 2. We each have a lvl 35 character right now and a few mid-lvl alts. His main is a warrior and I play a cleric.
Short review by theme:
Graphics:
We like it. We played WoW for years and loved the game for the raid content and people but we both were never big fans of the looks of WoW. I personally missed the more "realistic" feel of worlds like EQ I-II and Vanguard. I've never played it but I am told it also reminds people of Warhammer Online a lot which could be explained by the use of the same engine (Gamebryo engine, also used in Civ IV, Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Oblivion).
My rating: 4/5
Performance:
My PC is about 8 months old, my husband's is brand new. We don't have the best of the best but the "best of the middle category" if you get what I mean. Can't get more technical since this isn't my area of expertise. We run the game on ultra setting and our FPS is usually around 50. Some earlier memory leaks that were making the game super sluggish have been fixed. I still read regular complaints about performance on forums and in chat but personally, all I experience is the occasional zone-wide hitch when some zone-wide action is taken (eg: after a zone-wide event, a loot window appears for all who participated. This is the kind of thing that would make my game hitch for a second or two).
I have never experienced a crash that had only affected me, only once or twice during stress-testing.
Also, I would like to point out something I read in an interview with the dev team that I thought was pretty cool. Their servers are not divided by geography but by task. For example, there is no "scarlet gorge" or "meridian" server but instead a "combat," "spellcasting," "looting" or "idle/traveling" server (these are examples made up by me to illustrate the idea). This prevents the massive lag we have all experienced in large clusters of people that usually involved heavy visuals. By spreading the load like this, I've not experienced any slow down due to massive battles.
My rating: 4/5
Class customization:
Not exceptional for the avatar but better than average. Good enough for me anyway especially after playing WoW which was among the stingiest in that area.
The soul system where you can pick up to 3 different "talent trees" per spec (and 4 specs per character) really gives you a sense of freedom. How well any particular combination really works, no one will be able to tell until release. Balance changes after each Beta have change the dynamics a lot. Something I enjoyed a lot 2 betas ago was not really viable as of last beta for example.
I'm sure this will always be in motion with changes to each class but the nice thing is that you are not locked into a given 3-tree set like in WoW. If they change a soul and you no longer like it, pay a few gold and swap it for another. You can choose between 8 trees so really, I think there is always going to be something decent.
My rating: 4/5
UI:
Very intuitive for WoW players and most modern MMO's. Elements of the UI can be moved around within the game for some moderate customization. As of right now, user created addons are not possible. In its current state, it's ok for me, as in it doesn't frustrate me but I will be happy if addons become possible later on.
My rating: 3/5
Crafting:
WoW clone. I, for one, am very disappointed. I am one of those masochists who loved Vanguard crafting. Even the grueling EQ1 crafting where it was a combination of rare ingredients and crazy grinding I liked. Basically, personally I prefer when crafting is such a time investment and/or effort that not everybody does it and few do it to the limit. If some decision making and individual customization is involved, even better.
My rating: 1/5
Fun factor:
That's all that matters in the end, right? I have fun playing Rift. Everything feels familiar, like a combination of all the things I liked about previous games and some significant improvements over some of the past frustrations. Of course, exploring a new world is always fun too. Nothing is so terribly revolutionary as to really dazzle me though. There is nothing here to inspire some deep passion in me. The rate at which new content for casual players is released will determine how long I stick with it. If I spot some new shiny along the way, I may stray. So fun for now and definitely a good 6-8 months, I expect which is enough to make me buy it. Beyond that is up in the air.
My rating: 3.5/5
I hope this was informative for those still considering trying it out. Someone mentioned this upcoming last beta is open so that would be everyone's chance to see for themsevles. Also, a piece of trivia I thought some of you might appreciate...

This time around I am going nightblade / assassin / riftstalker and its pretty strong for soloing (but everything is).
I don't see how you can pick a rogue class and not get at least a little bit of the nightblade soul tree because it has the set % increase to combo builders and finishers - thats a huge portion of your damage right there.
The rifts in the open beta seem a little bit more like zerg fests even on a 'low' population server. I don't know if I've even made contact with any mobs in a public quest. This could be because I went with the Defiant faction this time and it seems like thats the more popular one, so we'll see.

I enjoy the game, played for the last 3 betas...
Few things I dislike:
1. Lack of meaningful, incentivized Open World PvP
2. Ranged DPS >>>>> Melee DPS in general because of how collision, targeting and facing work.
3. Mages currently are severely underpowered in PvP. PvE they are ok.
I do love the concept and will probably be playing it at headstart. My 42 Paladin/Void Knight/Warlord's a monster tank

I think MMOs are going to have the whole "Simpsons did it" effect in relation to WoW. Seriously it took me all of zero seconds to know every control and feature of the game because they are straight rips from WoW.
It's not a bad game not sure if I'll give it a serious go or not I did enjoy playing a warden/purifier/sentinel healing cleric though. Although running around with PB and his ass not having his vent up loud enough to hear me was causing me to want to shoot him over TCP/IP.

I think MMOs are going to have the whole "Simpsons did it" effect in relation to WoW. Seriously it took me all of zero seconds to know every control and feature of the game because they are straight rips from WoW.
Meh, most of WoW's shit was stolen from AC, EQ, EQ2, DAoC, etc... They certainly didn't revolutionize any of the concepts. Improved in some areas, perhaps.
It's not a bad game not sure if I'll give it a serious go or not I did enjoy playing a warden/purifier/sentinel healing cleric though. Although running around with PB and his ass not having his vent up loud enough to hear me was causing me to want to shoot him over TCP/IP.
PB in Vent... mmm... where do I sign up.
Seriously we should get a guild going for some of people here.

Yeah, but I'm thinking more of the sound of people's voice... whether it's girly, nasal, annoying, etc - you can then apply that to all their posts..
Like, for example, if someone has a super gay voice with a lisp, from then on, when you read their post, you'll apply their flamingness, even to their "serious" posts.

I'm curious, what are the major mechanical differences offered by Rift over a game like WoW?
One of the big things is how they break down the classes. There are four "callings" that each have several "souls" that can be aquired. Each soul presents a different set of skills via a root and talent tree. Root abilities are gained as you spend points in it's respective soul. I believe there are plans for additional souls to be found/gained via endgame content and raids, but I think there were a total of ~8-9 souls in beta (that total would include a pvp soul, though I'm not sure they were implemented).
You can have up to four "roles", each of which is composed of a three soul combination. So you could have a rogue with a role set to tank, dps, support, and pvp. You can change roles any time out of combat and it costs nothing. This really helps cut down the "need" to have multiple characters if you want to fill different roles. The warrior is least diverse, but the other classes can each fill three of the four roles (tank, dps, heal, support).
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8378/soulspurpose.jpg
The rifts and invasions are also something you don't quite see in Warcraft. Sure, there are rare events that has things invade places in Azeroth, but nothing like what happens in Rift. Tears that eventually open (or are opened by players) into rifts of various size and power randomly pop up across the map. The more you contribute to the sealing of the rift, the better the loot you get at the end. Each zone seems to have it's own tier of rare and epic currency you can exchange for items. It's also pretty good exp running from rift to rift with a decent group smashing them down.
If the rifts aren't put in check quick enough, they send out groups of invaders that destroy things in their path. Eventually they reach their destination that is a wardstone near some town or outpost. If they take down the wardstone, you lose control of that area and the npcs there disappear. Probably not too likely to happen during "normal" rift events, but you can pretty much lose all of the map if people don't do anything. Major rift events make that a bit more common since there is a time limit to defeat the boss and seal the rift. There also appears to be raid rifts that can be summoned. I think the items were on guild vendors and I'm not real sure how they worked, but they would say something along the lines of infuse this object with x amount of y in order to create a Raid Rift #1 Lure.
Another nice feature is the public group deal. When you're around events with people set to have their group open to the public, a button pops up that you can click for quick and easy grouping. No sitting around asking if there's a group while people ignore you and make things disappear.

I've heard talk that's it's easy to disrupt some zones by going killing the other factions NPCs on a PvE server and not be able to do anything about it since you can't attack them back. Not sure how true that is since I played on a PvP server and didn't get high enough to really do any PvP.

The first 10 levels SUCK ROYAL ASS solo. I was bored to tears, seriously they were/are so boring I wanted to delete the game. However, once I got to about 12 or so it was fine. What changed? Not sure maybe abilities, could be the zone thinned out a bit or my survivability went up.
That being said when I played last night with Falgrin and Chaincreep it wasn't near as vomit inducing.
I will say I'm starting to see the appeal of the game and it's got serious potential. Some of the things are a little clunky/odd compared to what I'm used to in WoW but overall it's smoothed out compared to Beta.

It is definitely a different gaming experience if you get caught in the horde of people questing. All of the collection quest items are taken instantly, you can't find the mobs you need to kill, there's a line for the named pops.
Got a really solid 3-man guardian side group going for the last 4 days on Sunrest. We were really lucky in that we were in well before the queues and were able to keep playing like crazy.
Our runecrafter already has max level runes, outfitter is on track for 20 slot bags by Thursday, we just got our level 40 mounts!
It feels like we've been outnumbered in every PVP zone we've entered by sheer number. Our only saving grace has been that we're always together and we've got experience working together. This is my first PVP game experience and I'm loving the shit out of it.
Loyrl
02-28-2011, 11:25 AM
PvP servers are usually fun the first time through for me, when you're leveling with friends and the pvp is usually group vs group. But when I am leveling an alt there is always some capped character ganking the shit out of you. So we rolled PvE in rift, which doesn't bother me.
So far Rift has been fun, people are doing rifts and fighting the invasions off, mostly in blues now, though I am only 29. We were 4 maning DSM yesterday at 26/27, and then cloth gear dropped the first 2 times w/o any clothy so we picked up a fourth. We gained 2-3 levels doing this alone. The quests are kill this kill that, omg titan, kill it. But what else are quests gonna be.
I chose Rogue, and for solo I have been doing a Ranger/bard and Sab for Rifts & Dungeons. Sab was doing some pretty good damage in the instances, single target isn't bad, and aoe is pretty bad ass. Think I'll try pvp again before I hit 30, I did two at 19 and we got dominated by the Guardians, I don't think we got 20 points.

I haven't really had time to play this week, so I've been stuck mid-20s mostly.
But just threw some points into bard. I was mostly just specced marksman.
This game is awesome. The one thing I like about it that I didn't from WoW is that there are few 'camps'; You don't have to rely on someone else hanging around to party with you because every time you try and pull one murloc, 20 hojillion more start running at you.
The other thing I love is the public group thing. See that guy waiting for/doing the same quest as you? Just join him, help him, and not have to wait for a re-spawn or him to reply or anything. It's pretty nice.
The other thing is that progression is pretty linear. Grab all the quests from an area- they lead you all to the same hunting ground. Do the quests there, turn them in and the next series will either lead to the next quest hub, or back to the same area to finish up. No running all over the fucking place to turn in quests.
This game is really rather fun.

It's all the little things like the area design. You fight your way up a mountain top but instead of needing to carve your way back down, you can ninja hop down a path to town. Or if you chop into a deep dungeon area, they'll give a port back out. You can trust their quests not to completely dick you.
So far with the content abundance, I'm so happy they didn't make it a pyramid like normal games. Typically they design MMO's with a billion low level things to do and very little near endgame or the top. This game was designed knowing people are going to be capped longer than milling around the newb zones at level 3.

I'm probably behind most people at this point.. just dinged level 20 last night.
Originally, I was mostly ranger... but the 3-30 range just sucks when something decides to mouth hug you, so went with a more saboteur spec. I love it. It seems to combine the ranged power and has no 3 foot minimum bullshit I've always hated with the Hunter style classes. I did my first instance last night and I have to say, I think I'm going to give bard a try as my 2nd spec. I didn't think I would like it... but the support that the bard brought to our group last night was pretty awesome.

36 ranger bard sab now for solo, and sab main for instances. Bard healing song + pets mend = my pet can tank 3 mobs np, just in case, or an elite mob in a rift w/o dying so fast.
One thing so far I don't like is how the epic rift shards that drop take a long time to get, and I was lvl 35 when I got my first one, and by the time I get a second I won't need a lvl 25 or 20 epic piece or even the lvl 30 epic chest, I haven't been to the lvl 40+ zone so I don't know if they use the same shards, I doubt it since the level 20's used a different shard as the lvl 30 zones.
Kitsun
03-03-2011, 12:18 PM
Each zone has a different rare shard to use at vendor merchants. Essentially you pick and choose when to burn your rare and planarite. If you skip quests and need a huge upgrade, you nab the vendor blue that can last you another 8-10 levels.

Currently lvl 19 and I've pulled 3 epic rift shards. It's all about getting in on the invasions and being there to help with the last kill. So yeah it's kind of random.

Saboteur is so OP right now it's not even funny. My husband went ranger/marksman/sab and he drops more bombs than anything else. His warthog pet can tank like a champ too. Between the two of us we don't even need a tank or a healer (he can heal his pet while it tanks and I went chloro so I have bloom).

I think the aoe bombs are overpowered (I bet they change it affecting 10 targets to 5-6) but the single mob really isn't. For single mob, it's faster to just kill them as a ranger.
Thankfully, the first instance was chuck full of aoe opportunities... I was a bomb throwing fool.

Something else that's pretty nice is and somewhat related is that most quests that require you to kill a certain mob will give you credit for helping to kill it even if it's been tapped by someone else.

If you look at some of the artifact placement, they pretty much promote people learning to (wall)climb and get creative with pathing. This feels different than what most games would want you doing and I think it's kinda cool.

Err, yeah, that's what I meant. He just uses his bow on a single target (or his slow bomb if he needs to get away). But yeah at invasions or rifts he just spams his AOE bombs and we end up with all the mobs/loot.

Well, ain't that a bitch. I'm digging my DK (R.I.P feral dr00ds) right now but I only play arenas and the occasional 10-man. Looking to try out another game because I'm a game swapping fool. I picked Dominator because a) Healers in WoW are fucking gay and these guys can shut them down, b) no one will be playing them, c) a good CC on any PvP squad is worthwhile and d) THEY FUCKING DOMINATE SHIT.
I'm just dicking around right now. I'll scan back through this thread to see where biatches are.
Bad luck the servers went down. I literally played for like 8 minutes.

my main build right now is rift/ranger/bard.. works ok, but I feel I should be doing more damage. Going to create my second set of souls as a marksman/ranger/bard and see if that works any better.

We were on Sunrest before it hit Fullblown crazy, and our guild decided to stick with it since all the RP servers are full anyway.
If anyone I know is on it or wants to look us up we are under the guild Resurgence (which we have in EQII, too). Defiant to the end!
My main is Minara, my sometimes is Caiylania, and I pop on my little ones to help people in Terminus sometimes as Ruais or Terasia.
Tried to talk Ardwen into it but he says he has to many games so far hehe.
Don't forget the dev's did say they were looking into server transfers once the furor dies down. We may all be able to merge then, even if we aren't in the same guilds it would be cool. Sunrest rocks btw :D
