Well, it's good to be back. First I'd like to thank those in game (never mind the forum) who've been exceptionally helpful and friendly thus far, although I'm probably forgetting a bunch.
Khuru/Kreek/Maliku
Picler
Eshielle
Javell
The nice mentor at Silvermoon whose name I forget
Second, is anyone aware of if the following people still play:
Gatre
Avius (I think?)
Sirke
Kkar
Naamtar (ran into him years ago in WoW, he was deployed I think)
Earnor (also ran into him years ago in WoW)
------
I started back in '95 I think. It feels so long ago, as I'm nearly 30 at this point. It's been odd simply recognizing names that even when I started out, seemed to be pillars of the community -- Heck, I saw Thuunk in the East Tower last evening, character portrait and all!
A few circumstances have brought me back. A good friend of mine works on SW:ToR as a creative writer (so if the bounty hunter storyline sucks, there's a 50% chance it's his fault), and he's mentioned time and again that BioWare is using HeroEngine. I've run into a few folks in World of Warcraft. Numerous threads on reddit in which people have an interest in the game. And nostalgia. Oh, nostalgia, how you haunt me so…
Regardless, it's been great feeling like a newbie all over again. The thrill of getting your first drake falchion to show the kobolds in the village "wots wot". Ordering an enchanted item from an NPC shop because I didn't check the pawn and player shops as vigorously as I should've -- at least they take minutes instead of hours or days now! Heck, I forgot to go listen to Raging Thrak and ask the town clerk in the landing for jobs. In all honesty, I think I'm liable at this point to simply focus on making new characters than dusting off my old ones except for RP or services (oh, how I miss lockpicking). Looking forward to it, that's for certain.
It's fantastic to see shield mechanics, actual combat maneuvers (OMG!), a third society, lots of randomly generated treasure, lockpicking more comprehensive than I remember, invasions, lots of folks actively roleplaying, pures not being forced to sword and board, fixskills, even more verbs… I'm a bit overwhelmed honestly! I'm also glad to see there's still an active community of website such as this forum, Krakiipedia, Virilneus, Lich et al.
So… good to be back and find a robust game with a roleplaying rich environment still here. I'll see what I can do about luring more folks (probably new folk) towards the game.
