View Full Version : Thoughts for a new rifle?

Buckwheet

So just recently added a new Beretta shotgun to my water fowling collection.

So now I need to upgrade my long range weaponry. Looking for some decent feed back on optics and the platform.

I have heard there are new digital scopes which can interface with your smart phone to assist in targeting. Would be interested in that possibly depending on price.

For larger animals(moose or elk) I like to reach out about 1200-1500 yards on the outset. 600-900 would probably be more realistic.

I have ~5k to spend on the whole system.

Thoughts?

And no a Barrett isn't what I am looking for.

I recommend the FAL with a red dot sight. Its only semi auto so you have to pump it but its range, accuracy, and damage are hard to beat. And its only 4k.

The last optics set I had was around $2k. That is where you spend the money in my opinion.

Indeed it is. Those moose are pretty dangerous.

Over Christmas my Dad and I went shooting a Ruger 77/17VMBBZ. Not as spendy as you want but a great varmit rifle and honestly probably one of the best times I've had shooting in awhile. I was grouping 3 shots at about 150 yards inside a quarter. Really nice and accurate rifle.

That is a very nice weapon. My dad has one in the safe. We use it for target practice on prairie dogs. Farmers love it when we come out.

Anyways, I don't HAVE to spend all of it. Just looking for a longer range and more accurate system than I have used in the past. I have a friend in TX who has invited me to go with him to MT/Wyoming for big game hunts and I have always had to borrow one of his systems.

Just want to use my own gun and get practiced.

I know that's the halo sniper rifle but a south african company makes a gun that is actually really similar to it, but you know, is real.

A 30.06 would be my recommendation for large game rifle. Optics wise, I won't be too much help.

.30-06 is a solid round. I've got one rifle that chambers it, a 1903 Springfield, it's also the only wood stock rifle I own. It does the job but I haven't had the opportunity to game hunt with it but everything I've heard says it will do the job nicely. I can vouch for it's ability to kill paper.

CZ makes a great bolt action rifle and I've got two platforms and they are my babies.

I love my CZ 750 mine chambers .308 so it's only good to about 800 yards but man is it sexy.

I have a CZ 550 in .308 with a kevlar stock (I'm just not a wood stock kind of guy unless it's on a classic shotgun). I know you can get these that chamber some large "safari" rounds. Lots of custom options there.

Remington M700 (mine's a .300 win mag) standard solid hunting rifle I've had zero issues with it.

I've got a savage 12 vss that's a real solid shooter, I can vouch for it as a solid platform.

You've got the right idea, optics are where you're going to blow your wad. Match trigger wouldn't hurt (maybe a Sako drop in). I would shop around and get what feels the most comfortable don't buy anything without having had put a hand on it first. You don't have to put a round thru it per say but at least see if it feels good in your hands and against your cheek.

Take all 5k and invest in a bionic eye that comes equipped with an auto-targeting device and telescopic capability. Most of my weapon buying experience comes from Rifts, by the way.

AnticorRifling
01-13-2011, 04:33 PM
I'd go with a 550 chambering .375 H&H but really I'd see if I coudln't put that set up on the 750 frame just because of the sex appeal of the 750.

Kuyuk
01-13-2011, 05:08 PM
I could use 5k to pay off debt, if you should decide not to buy a rifle.

Just sayin.

LOL, I've got a Marlin .375 big bore lever action I've had since I was 20 (Elk hunting trip). In 7 shots I blew a rail tie in half. Fucking brutal kick, but I felt like John Wayne when I shot it, so it was worth it. If it had the one handed cocking mechanism, I'd have gone horseback riding on it and tamed the west!

My personal favorite is a .308 but that is not good for the big game.

Go with a 300 Remington Ultra Mag and you can take down any big game out there, just make sure you shoulder the weapon right or you will regret it...

Here are a good site to decide the cartridge:

They are just nuisances to farmers. Used to be they would pay for your ammunition to take care of them.

Anyways, they are self cleaning. You take them out with a round from that gun and they kind of go splat and then you see one of their buddies come out to drag the carcass down into the hole. So pop you got another.

Eventually, there are so many you just can't keep up with the feeding FRENZY!

Anyways, went and shouldered a few tonight at the gun shop. Nothing really felt right. He gave me the name and number of smith so I am going to take a trip there this weekend.

PS. If you want to have some fun times, there is a gun called the Plinkster. Its a .22 assault style rifle. Was on sale for $199 over the holidays. Its just a blast to put several hundred if not a thousand rounds through. Cheap enough to not care about costs too.

My crazy survivalist cousin does his elk hunting with a 7mm mag Winchester. He doesn't do it at nearly the range you suggest though.

My one personal good super long range experience was shooting .300 WSM on a Tikka owned by that same cousin.

If not then a Rem 700 .30-06 or a 6.5x55.

So going to have a custom one put together after meeting with the guy this morning.

Going with a custom Weatherby Mark V .338 Lapua Magnum, not 100% sure on the optics package yet. There is two to choose from, but he has video of 850-900 yard shots that are all reliable.

So its right in the area I was looking for.

Horus Vision "Super Falcon" Steel 4-16X50mm

I liked the NightForce better, but we'll see what the pricing comes in at.

I got in trouble at college for machining gun parts with tools in the metalworking shop. It's surprisingly simple, actually- if you have access to the right equipment- and there are plenty of sites out there with info about getting started. You can get kits, too, which simplify things.

Don't underestimate the difficulties involved. I permanently messed up the balance of a rifle that was intended as a gift for my cousin through detailed inlay work. With that said, I think customized guns in any aspect = awesome.

Spot on for making fun of someone that's looking to put rails on an AK. It would be like me putting rails on my FN-FAL you jus shouldn't do it. The beauty of those frames is the simplicity, the classic lines, look, and feel. Adding rails douches them up.

Rails are awesome on certain frames but they just aren't right for the AK.
