Republicans have a majority in both houses of the New Hampshire legislature, and they are considering repealing the homosexual marriage law approved by the legislature in 2009. If they decide to introduce the bill, it will almost certainly pass both houses, but it will be difficult to overcome the governor's veto. Another possibility is a constitutional amendment, which could not be introduced until 2012. The downside of a constitutional amendment in 2012 is that New Hampshire is an early primary state for the Republican nomination, which means that it would be a major topic of discussion for all GOP candidates.

The Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., has vowed to do "whatever it takes" to repeal gay marriage in New Hampshire. Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders in Boston is promising to do "whatever it takes" to stop them.

From Massachusetts to Maine, Washington to New York, gay marriage activists have their eye on New Hampshire, where lawmakers this session will consider whether to repeal the year-old law permitting same-sex marriage.

As local activists pay homage to the idea of a "New Hampshire discussion," both sides are preparing for a deluge of outside money and support.

Live free or die. That's the official state motto of New Hampshire.

Why would they want to repeal it?

Why would they want to repeal it?

They don't and they won't. The state motto isn't "Live free or die (except if you're an h-mo)"

Living in New Hampshire, I can safely say that this is about the least important thing on peoples minds, peoples homes and jobs are much more important, until the economy is fixed the average people could give a damn if you marry a goat and commit adultery with 3 sheep and a llama. Not to mention theres no way the huge number of former massachusetts residents living in southern New Hampshire would ever not vote and allow such a waste of time and money amendment to pass.

Why would they want to repeal it?

To preserve the sanctity of the institution of marriage, to protect the children, and to prevent the downfall of the nation.

Not true. Won't happen.

To preserve the sanctity of the institution of marriage, to protect the children, and to prevent the downfall of the nation.

I am pretty sure that economic and political turmoil are much farther along down the causing destruction road than conservative marriage values.

Because marriage is sooo sacred these days isn't it? Take a look at the divorce rates and tell me you still believe that.

To protect the children? What does gay marriage have to do with protecting the children?

And how the hell will gay marriage cause the downfall of our nation? The only thing I see causing our downfall is corrupt and greedy politicians, bankers, lobbyists, ect.

It depends on what is causing divorces doesn't it? I think divorces are caused by a permissive society, including new and undesirable man-made forms of "family" relationships.

To protect the children? What does gay marriage have to do with protecting the children?

Children need the proper example so that they can grow up to be good parents.

There have always been corrupt politicians, but it has never caused the downfall of our nation. We never tried homosexual marriage, and that might just be the thing that causes our downfall. Since you can't see it, I'm afraid certain parts (http://www.forum.gsplayers.com/showpost.php?p=1215929&postcount=1) of your brain may be undersized.

As someone who is also living in New Hampshire, I'm just going to 'me too' what Ardwen posted a few posts ago. Nobody here except the ludicrous right-wingers (hello, Christian Coalition) cares who you want to sleep with or marry. NH had a wakeup call about this sort of thing just over a decade ago with the religious right taking over the School Board of a smallish town after an election and trying to ban all discussion of sex (even from health class) and homosexuality (As You Like It wasn't taught that year, IIRC, due to the teachers being too afraid to discuss the material), get National Geographic out of the libraries (since N.Geo. was 'pornographic information'), and things of that nature.

Next election the town had woken up enough to get things back on track by voting out the right-wing candidates (after having the entire embarrassing debacle show up in papers across the country), and the same thing's going to happen now. Any attempts to repeal the same-sex marriage law are going to fail - there's more important things we'd like our representatives to concern themselves with than screwing with people's personal lives.

For anyone who's actually curious, a good timeline of the school board thing can be found at http://markson.net/rr_merrimack.htm. It's as facepalm-worthy now as it was years ago.
