A family member of mine and their significant other are moving to Austin to be part of a tech startup. Any suggestions on nice areas to live downtown near the lake/river area? I figure we have some Texas folks.

Alternately if there's some engineer types interested in mobile software apps, they might hire some.

That sounds right up my alley actually.

Austin is an awesome place. I haven't lived there, but I've visited a few times, mostly for business. Austin is pretty much the only place in Texas I would want to live in.

I think it's pretty neat from what I've seen. I like Galveston, too, but I wouldn't want to own property there.

Even though its hot and dry as shit, having the best music scene in the country makes up for it.

As someone who has lived in Austin and currently lives in Galveston, there is no competition. Stick with Austin.

As for places to live in Austin, there are a lot of nice, new condos up and down fifth street in downtown. For more residential areas, anything around Mopac and Enfield area is nice and downtown is very accessible. They are going to pay a pretty big premium to live anywhere near downtown though. I've also heard that recently there has been a lot of urban renewal on the east side of I-35 with a pretty fun culture. Might be worth checking out.

What are you doing in Galveston? I'm currently living in Katy although if I wasn't married I would move to Austin in a heartbeat.

Medical school. Done in June then can thankfully get off the island. Probably won't end up in Austin at that point but my parents live there so I get to visit frequently.

Kirby Lane or Magnolia Cafe after leaving sixth street at 2 AM is the best.
