Ok, here is the premise. If I have pictures taken from a trail camera, and I am interested in enhancing the resolution of the photo in order to increase the clarity of the image when I zoom in (in this case a unique plastic color band on the leg of an animal).

Does anyone know of any software that would be beneficial in this process. I am not talking CIA level satellite software (enhance.....enhance.....enhance). Just the ability to clearly identify alphanumeric characters from 10-20 meters.

Any photobuffs able to help?

Additional information: the leg bands are small (about an inch high, with three alphanumeric characters on it). They can be identified in the pictures taken in good daylight zooming normally up to around 5 meters. In real usage, I will need to be able to analyze images taken in poor daylight (sunrise-ish) from 5-15m.

You will have the best results just doing it manually, with photoshop, gimp, or infranview. Crop down to the band. Adjust gamma/contrast until its somewhat legible. Then use your eyes to make the best guess. There is no magic program that will add informative pixels to an image that doesn't already have them.

Use the program they are all using:

I was hoping someone would bring up something like this.

If it's just blurry and actually does have enough resolution, it is possible to deconvolve the image, although it would probably take a lot of trial and error and CPU grinding.

Currently I am able to read the objects in the images from about 6 meters away from camera in lower light. I've tried messing around with GIMP and infranview, and while I can make it clearer, they are not able to increase the distance of readable objects.

If anyone is genuinely interested in what I am trying to do, I can upload one of my images.
