View Full Version : Thrown Weapon limits?

I've picked up throwing as a secondary skill and have been wondering if there are any unseen limits to what can and cannot stick in critters and players.

For example, I know small things like knives can stick inside people but can something big like a javelin or sword stick into people?

If I come up with any other questions I'll be sure to ask.

I believe that a factor that determines what sticks and what does not is the weight of the weapon. I've seen broadswords, handaxes and falchions stick.

Hm...so a light weapon would stick while a heavy one wouldn't? I'm also curious about endroll success. Does it have to be ridiculously high or is it like an arrow? I've been throwing a quoit and daggers but no success on high, moderate or low endrolls.

I'm no thrown expert, but I believe whether it sticks or not is related to either endroll or damage inflicted.

I've thrown a quoit at a stunned and prone kobold with a successful roll of 190+. It's not impressive but it failed to stick.

Not a Kobold but...

With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a drake quoit into flight.
You throw a drake quoit at a cave gnoll!
AS: +85 vs DS: +7 with AvD: +33 + d100 roll: +96 = +207
... and hit for 44 points of damage!
Slashing blow to chest knocks the cave gnoll back a few paces!
The cave gnoll falls to the ground and dies.
The drake quoit is deflected to one side, sailing to the ground.
Roundtime: 3 sec.

And with a Scimitar on a Troglodyte...

With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a scimitar into flight.
You throw a scimitar at a troglodyte!
AS: +85 vs DS: +0 with AvD: +31 + d100 roll: +56 = +172
... and hit for 40 points of damage!
Quick flick of the wrist!
The troglodyte is slashed across its forehead!
The troglodyte falls to the ground and dies.
Lacking the force and angle to lodge in a troglodyte, the scimitar simply falls.

And with my bow...

You nock a wooden arrow in your composite bow.
You fire a wooden arrow at a cave gnome!
AS: +68 vs DS: -43 with AvD: +30 + d100 roll: +64 = +205
... and hit for 49 points of damage!
Loud *crack* as the cave gnome's sternum breaks!
The cave gnome screams one last time and dies.
The wooden arrow sticks in a cave gnome's chest!
Roundtime: 3 sec.

Might have something to do with the slash damage vs pierce damage also.

Would make sense for pierce to stick in easier.

Success with my drake Quoit.

With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a drake quoit into flight.
You throw a drake quoit at a sea nymph!
AS: +85 vs DS: -3 with AvD: +40 + d100 roll: +100 = +228
... and hit for 57 points of damage!
Weak diagonal slash catches the sea nymph's left knee!
It is dislocated.
The sea nymph falls to the ground and dies.
The drake quoit is lodged in a sea nymph's left leg!

Success with a normal dagger I got from that nymph.

With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a dagger into flight.
You throw a dagger at a carrion worm!
AS: +85 vs DS: +13 with AvD: +25 + d100 roll: +84 = +181
... and hit for 40 points of damage!
Slash to the carrion worm's lower back!
The worm rolls over and dies.
The dagger is lodged in a carrion worm's back!
Roundtime: 3 sec.

Might have something to do with the slash damage vs pierce damage also.

Would make sense for pierce to stick in easier.

Eh...I'm tired and this is screwing with my head. I'm gonna try to screw around with darts and see if I have a higher success right.

I think I've got it now. Criticals are the deciding factor. If you don't land a pretty hard crit, the weapon fails to stick.

With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a crystal-edged pale silver dagger into flight.
You throw a crystal-edged pale silver dagger at a hobgoblin!
AS: +94 vs DS: +9 with AvD: +23 + d100 roll: +95 = +203
... and hit for 36 points of damage!
Strike to temple! Saved by a thick skull!
The hobgoblin crumples to the ground and dies.
The pale silver dagger is lodged in a hobgoblin's head!
Roundtime: 3 sec.

Rank 4 Critical

I'll experiment more.

I believe anything 6 pounds or more will not stick in a creature.

Broadswords aren't that heavy and yeah, they can fuck you up pretty bad.

I've seen a claidhmore stick in someone before.

Lightened?

Claidhs give you minor wounds and force you to kneel when they're thrown.

Both are about right.

It's not impossible, but it's extremely rare and not something that occurs normally. I've found that anything over 4lbs-ish requires a huge endroll and really high crit to stick. The heavier the weapon, the more endroll is needed. And even then I think there's a random factor involved that most likely scales down as the weight increases.

For example I've had 350-400 endrolls with a 5lb handaxe and not had it stick. However I have had the odd case where something of the same weight, or equal has stuck.

Get more strength and it won't happen.

With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a rapier into flight.
You throw a rapier at a hobgoblin!
AS: +94 vs DS: +8 with AvD: +40 + d100 roll: +77 = +203
... and hit for 40 points of damage!
Attack punctures the eye and connects with something really vital!
The hobgoblin crumples to the ground and dies.
The rapier ricochets away from a hobgoblin, landing nearby.
Roundtime: 5 sec.

I love this skill. I really, really do. That was a level 5 rogue aiming.

There is something pretty awesome about a falchion sticking out of a critters chest as it drops dead.

The sad part about all this is I'm attempting ranged weapons but I scarcely hit my intended target (1/5 times I'll hit my aim and do piss poor damage) but with throwing, no matter what I'm chucking, I hit 3/5 times out of every throw and I typically kill in one shot.

Brutal skill. And yeah, rapiers, javelins, and other pointed (sometimes cudgels!) stickin' out of folks.
