Crafting and Forging Costs (Time and Silvers)

Hey everyone,

Because I couldn't find this information elsewhere, I decided to track it myself. Obviously this is going to be very specific to each person, but it should let people know a little bit what they're getting themselves into before they decide to make their own weapon. My Character is a Dwarf Paladin. So far I have mastered crafting and made my own perfect mithril hammer. Here is the log for mastering crafting.

Total dwarf-hours: 135 hours, 42 minutes.
Total Silvers: 59,313.
Total Exp: 111,648 (This included my gift; the shortage is likely due to ranking up while my mind was full, I believe the total possible is 128k)

As I said, I also made myself a perfect mithril hammer. This is a lot more "hit or miss"; and very luck dependent. I happened to get mine on the 17th try (using a friend's master craftsman elf rogue for vising), but I've heard people get it on the first shot, while others couldn't get it for 25 times. The average percent chance I've heard is approximately 10% to get a 'perfect' vice.

Total dwarf(and elf) hours: 39 hours, 21 minutes.
Total silvers: 549,159.
Total Exp: negligible.

Surprisingly, it was very close in time to crafting; I figured being a dwarf paladin, it would take less time to master forging. Obviously the big difference is cost; steel is more expensive than wooden blocks, and it was reflected in the total amount spent.

So, to highlight, from start (0 skills), to mastering a weapon skill (500 crafting, perfect hammer, 500 skill):

Total Experience: 181,215

I can't wait till you remake the hammer, because when you look at it you see your elf's crafting mark, and the OCD nature of people that leads them to forge in the first place will eat at you untill you have one with your characters name on it.

When I get another 550k and 3 days of my life to spare, I'll be sure to remake it. That's interesting though; I probably am OCD enough to put my own weapons together as a result.

I really wish I documented this, as I've been forging myself.

My gnome wizard just got mastery in his 2nd weapon type. The final rank took 7 hour, 40 minutes, give or take a few minutes. (It's lost to the screen scroll of about 50 ranks in the next skill.)

Rank 497 took like, 14 hours, rank 498 took forever, I missed it either sleeping or working. The slowdown is really right around rank 400 and on. Before that, you get them with enough regularity to keep you interested.

That's my most recent...

On another that just started... from rank 41 - 75, he got a rank on every pull with the exception of 2 instances. One took 2 pulls to get a rank, that was rank 45, and rank 47 took 3 pulls.

Just got rank 83, took 2 pulls. Moving on.

All of my people created their own forging-hammer prior to starting in the forge. The dark elf rogue had the best success, creating the hammer on his 3rd vice attempt. Every other character took at least a day, and the gnome wizard took nearly 2 days solid. I have no official numbers as to the cost.

As for the exp, it's 501 * 250 = 125250 exp possible from the first artisan skill. Half that, for the 2nd artisan skill, and half it again for the 3rd.

I figured being a dwarf paladin, it would take less time to master forging.Profession and race don't have any effect on getting ranks. They do have an effect on success, but I don't remember what they are. The only thing that has an effect on getting ranks is a sufficiently high LOG (I think it is) bonus.

It should take on average of 3397 rank-garnering attempts to get 500 ranks, so I wonder if your average rank-garnering attempt took about 2 minutes 23 seconds?
