Big Bob Gibson's in Athens, AL (like 10 minutes west of Huntsville). Has the best BBQ I've ever had.
A close second is Dreamland in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, AL.

There's a Dreamland near here, I wonder if they're franchises of the same restaurant? Keep meaning to check that place out, it always smells SO good when we drive by.
edit: A quick search tells me yes, they're the same restaurant. I'll have to go asap!

Yea, Dreamland is great. My wife used to get the pulled pork sammy, but I was always all about the ribs. Great shit; I hope the one in ATL holds up to the Bama boys.

VA: Cuz's and Blue Ridge Pig.
NC: Allan & Sons and the Skylight Inn
Chain wise, Dreamland is pretty epic, I'll agree.

Also chain-wise, I love Sonny's. Their pulled beef brisket with sweet bbq sauce is so goddamn delicious. Paired with okra, corn fritters, and garlic bread leads to a pretty amazing meal. If they could make turnip greens like my mother in law, it would become epic.
Their ribs are knee-weaking too.
Now I’m on a quest. In my area there is Famous Daves and Red Hot and Blue both of which I am not impressed with. Time to google bbq in my area and start exploring!

Famous Dave's is... eh. Big chain's are pretty shite.
Gates and sons in KC.
Haven't been back to try it yet, but I keep hearing great things about Oklahoma Joe's in KC too. Has won the KC BBQ competitions several years running.

Another vote for Sonny's.
In the northwest, Longhorn is pretty darn good, but it doesn't compare to the bbq places down south.

I've been looking for 2.5 years now. Good luck to you.
Anyone know of any good places in the northeast? I know that's a silly question... BBQ in the northeast... but I wants :(
Yes...drive to your local airport and fly to KC, Texas or the SE.

Willard's in Chantilly is about the only "local" BBQ place I can think of.

Capital Q on H street is decent. Texas style. Pulled beef sandwich is good.

Not sure if you're anywhere near Boston, but Smoken Joe's is really good.

It's fairly hard to come by in Ohio, but City BBQ is a local chain that's pretty damn good.
Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati is world famous too. Hour drive for me but it's worth it.

Another reason why the state of Ohio sucks. Big surprise.

At least we'll keep our title. boo-yah.
Ohio really does suck, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Red Bones (http://www.redbones.com/), in Davis Square (Somerville), is good. I'm partial to the BIG PLATE OF RANDOM MEAT you can get for lunch for $9.
Otherwise, New England is pretty suck for BBQ.

My avoids are up for the entire Northeast. This website might be helpful though.

Every summer there's a huge BBQ event at Madison Square Park in NYC. Pitmasters truck up from all over the South, bringing their own meat, sauces, spices, grills, smokers, and crew members who say "y'all" without any hint of irony. Then they set up shop for one day only. Now look, I'm no expert on BBQ. I haven't been further south than D.C. since I was 2 years old. But that was the best goddamn BBQ I have ever had. It really made me appreciate how even the best northeastern BBQ is, comparatively, maybe just above average.
Edit: Also, Red Bones is definitely one of the better Boston BBQ eats, and they have a nice beer selection too. Also okay: Texas Smokehouse in Brookline Village, and Blue Ribbon BBQ in Newton (takeout only), which I think someone already mentioned.
Edit2: BBBQ.

Anywhere where I don't have to wait for the BBQ to begin at "marinade."
