I've been getting these up the wazoo today only. The beginning of this week I did not experience any problems. This is the first time I have been able to get on all day today, save for this morning -- and it is running extremely slow.

I can only conclude that work is to blame. Ipso facto.

Quick, there was an accident outside my house and a car got flipped ontop of a person and they're trapped, I've placed my unaroused penis under the car, send me pictures of your boobs so I can lift the car for them!

I wonder if the stuff that I like about the boards (it saves all your PMs foeva, threads, etc) is the reason for the database errors.

Also it keeps all the rep on one page. It takes a good minute to load the User CP sometimes.

Used to get these time outs and db errors every once in a great while, but the last 2+ weeks its been getting a lot worse.
I also am not loading much per page- 10 posts usually.
Just wondered if it was related to a certain browser being used- IE, or if it's an internal problem with the website or server.

I'm using Firefox. I get a lot of database errors but they come in waves. I'll go for a good stretch not getting any, then I'll get one every time I click. I wonder if it has to do with how much you try to refresh the boards? I seem to get it more when I'm browsing around more.
I've also never gotten it from my iphone, but that could also be time of day dependent or something (maybe traffic affects it)

Seriously. This is ridiculous. It's like we are living in the dark ages. Aren't the admins of this site some kind of computer geeks? Start geeking™ for pete's sake.
If it's a financial issue then start a pledge drive. I'd donate for a more stable server or site, and I'm sure others would.

These conversations have been going on for quite a while. The last time it happened it lead to me being overly critical and getting banned from the forums for a short period of time.
I personally have felt its time for a new lead admin on the forum for quite a while. The site needs to be moved from where its hosted to a more reliable host. Many people, including myself, have offered to help but so far we have been turned down.
More history of the PC I guess...
Every other time that a lead admin has stepped away from the game and then found themselves not spending much time on the forum they have stepped down and let someone else run the show. I think Kranar needs to look at the situation the forum finds itself in and make some tough decisions.
There is no reason for this forum to be as poorly functional as it is.

It was more than being a dick. Kranar and I came to an understanding about it and everything that happened we agreed needed to happen. But the reality is that nothing has changed since then and everything that was wrong with the forum then is still incorrect today. Both Kranar and I are passionate when it comes to the PC. I just wish that more was being done even if not being done by me, because we have fully capable members who can also assist with the PC.

There are a few potential remedies to this issue, though without access to the server to actually troubleshoot some of these are kind of shots in the dark. All of these are server-side changes. Some user settings may exacerbate the issue (e.g. high posts per page, etc.), but it's still indicative of a backend issue.
Assuming it's mysql on the backend, first thing to check is the max_connections to make sure it's not being reached. You can get high watermark by a SHOW STATUS on most versions and looking for max_used_connections. If this equals the max_connections in my.cnf it could be a problem. This is often a case for default installations that have grown since original deployment. If memory is constrained you do have to balance this variable with a few others to ensure mysql doesn't run out of memory.
If individual queries are lingering around too long (for a message board too long would be more than a second for most queries) then it's possible an index is off. Also easily corrected with an ANALYZE TABLE.
If queries are running quickly, however the connections are lingering and exhausting max_connections, it can also somtimes be the load and delay from the application (board) itself. In these instances I've used a php opcode cache (e.g. APC) to dramatically improve application performance and support a much larger number of users on a single system.

That is pretty much the history through Kranar's eyes. Where we differ is that I was the first member, I have user 000001 or whatever in the original forum software UBB, which was the same software The Spot was using.. I created the name, registered the domain and hosted it. Kranar liked the idea and what he writes is 100% accurate. I knew technically how to do it, but lacked experience converting people from the spot.
I did not however leave because I was tired of the place's antics. I was tired of the place because I didn't play GS anymore and was moving on full time to graphical MMOs. I stopped in from time to time during this period of time.
Caels approached me when I was leaving and he and I agreed that he would run the place. I don't know much of what happened during that time as I was not around much. So from the Caels days to when Kranar took over full time I was not present much just checked in from time to time.
And I was not suggesting there be a coup on the forum. I am suggesting that admins have rotated out several times without any issues in the past. Even Kranar hints that things could/would change. They did and he has been admin in absence for quite some time.
Its not a bad thing to rotate out admins, especially when the forums are languishing and not functioning technically.

Talking about old websites has got me reminiscing. Anyone remember a website a couple of guys made about 10 or 11 years ago? I think it was something like "Gemstone sucks" or something like that. Basically it was started by a couple of guys who "exposed" some of the things Simutronics did and how bad some of the players were (back when being blatantly OOC and multi accounting were considered big no nos by many people.)
Then one day someone setup a forum for them (which was apparently hard to do back then or something?) and that ran for a couple of weeks then the guy who made the forum hijacked it, booted those two guys off of his website and made it a Gemstone fan forum.
Good times, good times.

Sorry to nerd things up again, but Vbulletin is apparently nice enough to expose the underlying database issue when it happens:
<!--
Database error in vBulletin :
mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: User gsplayer_Kranar already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections
/home/gsplayer/public_html/forum/includes/class_core.php on line 271
MySQL Error :
Error Number :
Date : Monday, April 16th 2012 @ 01:01:16 PM
Script : http://forum.gsplayers.com/
So issue is either that max_user_connections is too low or something is causing connections to persist for far too long and it's naturally exhausting the max user connections as people keep hitting the site. FYI if the board is the only thing running on the db then max_user_connections doesn't really need to be set or should be set almost as high as max_connections.
Tgo01
04-16-2012, 01:28 PM
By "max_user_connections" do you just mean how many people are visiting the site at any given time?
Right now on the homepage it says there are 202 active users (59 members and 143 guests) but it says most users ever online at once was 296 on 01-12-2012. So if that's the case how were we able to have 94 extra people online a few months ago? I guess something could have changed recently.
What was happening on 01-12-2012 by the way?

Each time someone clicks on a link Vbulletin will open a connection to the database, query for the info, then (unless it's pooling) immediately close it. If the queries all run quickly then there is no problem. If a particular query takes a long time to run for some reason then you could run into a problem if (for a simple example) one person ran it many times or many people ran it one time.
The user connections I'm talking about are Vbulletin's connections to the database and don't have a lot to do with board users. Also FYI the board considers an "active" user to be one who last hit the site within n minutes for example. A database connection is usually active for less than a second or few seconds when someone actually clicks something, so you can have hundreds of board users only ever occupy maybe 10-20 db connections depending on conditions. Of course if you had 100 users all click on a link at once, you'd wind up momentarily with ~100 db connections (assuming no limit were in place), but that's very unlikely since most of a user's time on a board is spent reading, not clicking.

/home/gsplayer/public_html/forum/includes/class_core.php on line 271
Makes me cringe seeing the site run under what I'm assuming is an admin account. Hmm.. I wonder if this site has any SQL injection vulnerabilities, we could fix it ourselves!
Tgo1, a "user connection" has to do with the program that runs the website talking to the database behind the website. Opening a single page could potentially create multiple user connections if the program was not written properly or some other issue was causing it to have a problem (it could talk to the database to ask for my avatar, not close the connection, then talk again to get the contents of this post).
Once the page is served to you, the active connection to the database should be closed, it shouldn't stay open while you read the forum.
Either way the forum software should handle that error a bit more gracefully.
Whatever the limit actually is the fact we're running into it is indicative of another issue as changeling mentioned. I don't really expect Kranar to go mucking around in how vBulletin works, but whatever the problem really is is probably something really hammering the database, something like needing an index on whatever search is pulling up rep comments.

It is just a result from a couple hacks/tweaks made to VBulletin, the age of the software, and the hosting environment its on, along with the overall size of the site.

If someone has shell access to the server along with root (or another account with SUPER priv) access to the mysql server I am willing to either fix it myself or walk someone through some diagnostic steps and then the fix.

I'm sure Kranar knows how and is perfectly capable of fixing the issue, he's usually oddly active when something is needed of him, and not active otherwise, but in this case he's been kind of quiet.
That and you're well aware that increasing the max user connections is only a stopgap and doesn't address the real problem. It's a stopgap that'd be very nice to have implemented until he can address the real problem, but these boards have not been getting exponentially more active, but the performance degradation has been getting worse at a rate that's non-linear.
I hate to say it because it's a fun mechanic to get people worked up over, but I think it's related to rep on the control panel, when rep was first implemented we couldn't view it, that was added on as an afterthought and I have a feeling it wasn't done peformantly. If I were to take a stab in the dark I'd say we're just an index away from this issue being fixed (although for the sake of future proofing I think viewing our rep should be paged in some manner).
To give you an idea, it takes about 10 seconds for my control panel to open, whereas a typical post, at 50 posts a page, takes less than a second.

Code tags, or at least picture tags, should be disabled in rep as well. I know it was a trend for a long time to include pictures in rep.

If we were to upgrade, it would function with IE9 too. Not sure it would do anything with this problem, but it would solve some others. Like it or not, a lot of people use those pesky Microsoft products.

I kind of like that, but it's certainly seen some abuse... the actual pictures do not contribute to this issue as far as load times go (It doesn't take the PC server any longer to send you a rep w/ images than without).
I'm also starting to think that the rep might be individually read, like there's some lookup for rep that belongs to a person, then a loop to read each individual rep entry. That kind of chatter could explain things pretty nicely. I've got 1397 rep entries ...
anyone interested in counting your rep, just hit F12 while looking at the control panel (Chrome and IE) go to the console tab and put in the following (then subtract 1):
document.getElementById('collapseobj_usercp_reputa tion').children.length

Pretty sure we tracked down root cause of the errors being a lack of new content being added to the boob thread. Apparently when that thread doesn't get proper a proper content refresh it causes instability in the rest of the forum database, sort of a ballast for error free posting if you will.

The problem is that it would need to be a huge effort to get people away from this domain, the knowledge in it, and be willing to start "from scratch".
I mean a forum with the exact same layout and a very similar domain name can be put together in less then 48 hours for under $250. Its the content and members that would need to drive the change.

This is also the only vbulletin forum I know of that isn't upgraded to the point that you can use tapatalk, which has fucking stellar mobile tools for viewing on phones etc. I mean, I'm pretty sure every other forum I use has been on tapatalk for at least 2 years now. Let's get this fixed up. Donation drive for Buckwheet?

Quick update:
The hosting provider is researching this issue (even though it was supposedly fixed early May but we see that it's not). Once I know more you'll know more.
In the meantime do me a favor, if the site is shitting the bed on you let me know the browser type/version and if it's in a specific area (user control panel, PMs, after submitting a reply) or all over that you're being crapped on.

I'm using Firefox and it mostly shits the bed on me when I try to open a new thread or click back to the home page of the forum. I've gotten the errors a few times when submitting a reply but that's a recent problem and not as prevalent it seems (for me anyway).

I have a difficult time believing these issues are the result of what browser you are using. I've tried Firefox, Chrome and IE and whatever browser the iPhone uses.. and I get the same amount of database errors in each case.

It comes in waves. When it's happening, it's everywhere. I have tried rebooting.
Google Chrome supposedly version 19.0.1084.52 m, but that's pretty clearly not a real version number so I don't know.

It isn't browser related, I get DB errors on chrome, IE, and on my kindle fire.

I don't believe they are related at all. I'm merely wanting to know so that if they try and say it's browser related like we're retarded I can tell them to eat shit and die....with data.

If Kranar is willing, I'd be happy to pay for/migrate/host the site on another hosting provider.

I know it's not. I just like being ahead of the stupid questions that normally surface when dealing with a help desk.

So I've definitely been flooded with complaints about these issues, so I owe it to you guys an update to see where things stand.
1) I do have the newest vBulletin software available and I'll look to see if migrating to another provider using the new software helps. The current one we use is definitely generations behind the new one.
2) I'm waiting back on the current provider to see what they think to issue is, it may not even be load-related but could just be a software bug.
I'm thankful for the donation offers but honestly this isn't a matter of cash, the biggest issue is that I only have free time to do this on the weekend. I'll see if I can squeeze in some extra time to get all this resolved by Sunday/Monday. Depending on what the final option is it may involve some down time to do the migration.

Thanks for the update, Kranar.
I was just starting to notice how prolific it's become.

I would just like to mention that I have done more reading and opening and closing of random threads in the past 24 hours than I've done in the past six months. Depending on one's point of view, this might or might not be a good thing. All I know is that I haven't gotten any gray hairs waiting for a thread to open for me.

I assume all your hairs are gray by now anyway, so how would you really know?
I've gone back to 100 pages per thread, no problems so far!

That would probably have the same result that spray on tanning does: I'd turn an unattractive shade of orange.

I think I remember the last picture of Tisket had her in some sort of sexy elementary school classroom and for a week everyone on the PC just wanted to have babies with her.
Someone should hunt that down.

No more database errors - but lately PC has only been loading half the page. All other websites are loading perfectly fine, PC just stops halfway down...
