So I got my hands on a 64GB SSD today and I'm thinking of how I'm going to install it on my system so I get the best performance out of it. Right now I'm running a 150GB WD Raptor with my OS and major programs on it and a 500GB drive as my storage/games/porn drive.

So, I'm thinking of putting the OS by itself on the SSD, all of my programs, including games, on the Raptor, and leave the 500GB for general storage. Is that the right way to do it, or are there some programs that would make sense to put on the SSD with the OS?

I figure I'll have about 30GB free beyond the OS (swap file goes on the raptor, right? Since it involves both reading and writing which isn't good to do on an SSD?) so I could probably put some of my video/photo editing shit on there too, since that is the slowest running stuff I have at the moment.

Any advice?

OS and games on the SSD. Everything else on HDDs.

What operating system are you going to use? Windows 7 (freshly installed) is the best as it configures itself for SSD use.

There's a good guide to the tweaks you need to do. Read that and do the majority of them.

Be aware that Windows 7 did NOT turn defrag'ing off by default on my installation.

Also, did you have any issues getting your system to detect it? Using the standard SATA ports on your motherboard?

I'd also install all programs/games you use A LOT to the main drive and everything else to other drives.

You also want to investigate the trim methods for your drive.

I'll probably do the install sometime over Christmas, since I doubt I'll get any time off work before then. I'll be doing a fresh install of Windows 7 as well as everything else. Should I slipstream a new Windows 7 DVD for this as well (i.e. did they patch it to function better with a SSD after launch?).

I've got SATA III and SATA II on my mobo, the SSD is not SATA III though.

The drive I got is a Samsung 470 Series MZ-5PA064/US 64GB, I will definitely look at the trim methods.

Thanks for the help!

That thing is going to be blazing fast.. if you've never used a SSD before, enjoy your first Windows bootup :)
