View Full Version : Training up a new wizard

Hi All,
I have three questions:

I'm looking into rolling up a baby Wizard. Assuming that I train in just over 2x spells, what spells should I train in? Right now I'm thinking of 500s 1x per level and 400s up to 406, then 900s up to 913, then 400s up to 414 and... I'll reassess after that.

Another question; I intend this wizard to be purely spell casting, but I'll start with a sword and shield. How many levels will I need before pure spell casting is a viable hunting option?

Finally, I'll probably train in Air lore 1x per level. Is there a reason why this is a good/bad idea?

Any other comments?

You can start "pure spell casting" at level 25. Prior to that you can start hunting with a wand/spell combo when you get mana leech. You can also start in with heavy wand usage before that. So, you will want to swing your sword to level 16 just to make things easier. Save up coins so you can stock pile wands. Hunt things like wraiths/wights that drop lots of wands.

Training in air lore is a good idea so you can unlock 505 Tonis Bolt and use it to knock down things that cast spells. They won't cast or do much of anything until they stand back up.

Here are the spells you will certainly want to have as soon as they become available: 425, 516

You can linger around in your wizard circle to help you get those spells as soon as you can.

As Anticor would kinda say..
1x THW
1x CM
1x HP
1x PF
2x spells
2x spell aiming
Train up to 4 ranks of armor for full leathers and stop..
if you in CoL train first aid by level or a bit higher...
You wouldn't need climbing nor swimming until later of life
Like Phant said until 25 to pure cast..I'm 2 levels before 25..When I get back and fixskills is up, I'll probably migrate into a pure caster..
You'll want to keep the 400s at level and major a bit before you level..
and 900s up to 905 until your 18-20 for call wind I think that's 912 913?
You could stop 509 once you get it..and wait a bit older then 511 for floating disk and stop, but keep the 400s going level like...I think that's good enough?
Oh! your stats should STR 90-100, LOG 100, AGI 80-90, DEX 80-90, DISC 70, AURA 70..and the rest just play with them..

Hmm...

So in later levels (say, 30-50, perhaps beyond) should I diversify my elemental lore, or is it best to just stick with air?

And am I correct in assuming that I can reallocate my stats within the first thirty days? So if I want my STR to be 90-100 I can change it to a lower number later within the first month? Or are you recommending that I leave my STR at 90-100 until cap?

Wizard strength grows slow unless your a giant or something, I think I started mine at 80 and its only just now 90+ 70 levels later. You can reallocate the stats before the end of 30 days, so set them for easy sword hunting and then change. 24 air lore is a good spot to stop, and then diversify into skills other than lore.

I wouldn't diversify Lores. Then again I am always for the fire mage approach. I usually go for pure Fire lore training as Immolation is the main hunting spell for many pure wizards. The only wizards that benefit the most from air and earth lore training are war mages. Not that Pures don't get the same benefits, but for a pure imho air lore is a waste of lore just to get the effects from hand of tonis and to get a 1 second haste(never needed haste as a pure). Earth lore is a waste just to get benefits from strength. And as it stands the spells that do benefit from earth lore pretty much suck. But thats my opinion, go for whatever you want or envision your wizard doing.

Immolation ftw <3
anyways, I forgot to train 1x in air lore if you're gonna be a warrior mage for the first 30 days or until your a bit over 20

Yep Immolation is the best hunting spell. Especially since you can be in guarded and don't have to stance dance. And it is awesome against Trolls/Orcs/Ice/Snow creatures, major PWN.
I think if you go warrior mage it is 24 ranks air lore what they recommend.

and 27 ranks for MjE. Gotta have both for the 24 ranks of air to shave that second.

I'm finish with my 24 ranks in air lore..
I'm gonna have a balance of fixskilling to pure casting or fixskill so I can bring my Mje up...So far pure casting got more weight..but because I love overhunting, I don't know yet..

Can't believe i missed this..I'm a human warmage
anyways, with signs for CoL I have 213 AS at 23...It's not that bad since I got a claidhmore, with a 4x maul, it's 225 AS..But I prefer my badass claidh for quick kills (less risk of dying) even though I can tremor/call wind(to stance them into offense which is really fun to)..I remember when I was rolling this wizard..I was like "I'll follow Anticor's step" and so I kinda did...It's fun until I hunt reivers, they got fucking old claidhs..

Go Pure. It's fun and you can over hunt, just have to have a strategy. Generally when I overhunt I use bolt/ball spells, or boil earth. You can also still use immolation, but it is a little harder to overhunt with it since it is a CS based spell which would make a good case for getting more ranks in MjE.

but I'm still married with speed and kill. My friends in-game (roleplay-wise)
are impressed with Dayko's crit kills/speed, most of them would rather hunt with him then any body else so they can get fried brains quickly, so now the warmage thing is more weighting..I'm still consider, which I have a couple months to get back in game and play him, I'll have my mind made up

Lol! Sounds like you are confused on what you want. An easy way to fix that is to make a second mage and play both.

I'm going with TWC. One of my other characters just found a +5 maul with a mana recovery enhancement.

THW, TWC is Two Weapon Combat, ie using two weapons.

Warmaging is a ton of fun and very viable, although at higher levels becomes less efficient and powerful than a well-trained pure mage.

As long as you 1x THW, 1x CM, 2x Spells you'll always be able to hunt. That's your core. I also strongly advise 2x spell aim, because having multiple forms of attack is fucking sweet. I recommend the following spell goals for a warmage:

425 at 25, 430 at 30, keep 400s at-level until 475 (max 425 benefit)
913 by title, good DS, stop 900s here for a while
509 at 9, 511 by title, then trudge this up to 527 while keeping on your 400s per above. 527 for Haste is nice but not a "OMG MUST HAVE ASAP 1 SECOND RT" situation. I had 2 second RT until level 36 and did just fine.

PM me or hit me up in game (Gondain) if you need anything.

So what does everyone recommend hunting at different levels? And on a related note, what do wizards hunt around 50-55 trainings?

Right now I'm in based in Icemule, hunting seekers, ice golems, etc. I was thinking of going down to RR to hunt in the Citadel or to the Landing to hunt stone giants.

i did seekers till i was 2 levels above them then i moved to EN and did the black forest ogres and boars in the blighted forest. very easy. not as crittable as seekers but still a cake walk.

I did the warmage thing until I was in my 40s... Now I'm a CS/Immo hunter primarily.

...if I'd drop my goddamn lockpicking I'd be even better at it, but I can't help it. Pickin wizard is good times.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Immo is really good around mule (since I've noticed you there)... You get multiple one shots whilst hunting.
