I thought this was interesting. Feedback. What did you/would you name your kids and why. What was the influence. Was pop culture a factor in your choice even a little bit?

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- BabyCenter®, the #1 pregnancy and parenting destination worldwide, today released the results of its annual Baby Names Survey and the Top 100 Baby Names of 2010. Based on the names of more than 350,000 babies born in 2010 to moms registered on the BabyCenter website, Aiden tops the boys' list for the sixth consecutive year while Sophia takes the number one spot on the girls' list away from Isabella. Also making their mark on this year's list are a number of pop culture influences, which BabyCenter has dubbed the Glee Effect, Mad Men Madness, and Disney Princess Magic. This year's list also takes note of two new influencers, sports and politics, with The Olympics and the Palins providing inspiration to many. Additionally, the research shows more modern names for boys becoming increasingly popular this year, even as parents continue to choose classic names for girls.

Using its unique name-preference algorithm, BabyCenter also offers its own picks for the growing number of pregnant celebrities and their soon-to-be headliners. In addition, BabyCenter took a look at the movers and shakers on this year's list, current baby-naming trends, and pop culture influences to predict which names will be hot in 2011 and beyond.

BabyCenter's Top 100 Baby Names list combines names that sound the same but have different spellings, making it a true measure of baby name popularity. The website conducts its Baby Names Survey every year to give parents-to-be a deep dive into the psychology and trends surrounding baby naming. BabyCenter's survey reveals interesting insights, including the fact that although 34% of moms say they hate a friend or family member's baby name, 90% of them would never tell. And 1 out of 3 moms used her mobile phone to decide on a name, whether by browsing the Internet for inspiration (27%) or texting baby name ideas to others (15%).

Pop Culture's Influence in 2010

Top pop culture influences this year include the TV series Glee, with the character names Finn and Quinn on a meteoric rise, and Mad Men, with seemingly old-fashioned names like Betty soaring in popularity. Moms seem to be as enchanted by the Disney princesses as their daughters are, with names like Demi and Tiana rising in popularity.

Two surprising new trends for 2010 come from very different sources. On the heels of the recent Winter Olympics, the names Bode, Shaun, and Apollo all made significant jumps in the rankings. And with the Palin family grabbing news headlines almost every day, the names Bristol, Willow, and Piper are all trending up.

"Thirty-six percent of BabyCenter moms say they find name inspiration in famous people and characters. This is the first time we've seen parents really own up to the influence of pop culture," says Linda Murray, BabyCenter editor in chief. "Celebrities are our royalty, and consciously or unconsciously, parents want a bit of that shine to rub off on their kids."

Looking ahead

BabyCenter has analyzed the names grew the most in popularity. Though you won't find them on this year's top 10 list, keep an eye out for this unusual bunch as they make their way up the rankings in 2011 and beyond!

What's in a Name?

In addition to compiling the list of Top 100 Baby Names of 2010, BabyCenter surveyed more than 2,000 moms in November 2010 to better understand trends in baby naming. Overall, according to the survey, the attributes of kindness and compassion, leadership, and good looks are becoming more important when choosing a name for both boys and girls. While strength is the top quality moms seek in boy names (68%), kindness and compassion is the top quality (64%) moms look for in girls' names. Choosing a child's name is considered one of the most important tasks for a parent-to-be, and one that is not taken lightly. Most parents (62%) believe that a child's name contributes to his or her success in life.

With 1 in 4 babies in the United States born to Hispanic moms, BabyCenter did a deep dive into influences and trends among the Hispanic population. In 2010, original names ruled for Hispanic baby boys, and the names were clearly influenced by video games. Three new boys' names in the Top 100 are tied to popular games: Mario (Super Mario Bros), Marcos (Gears of War), and Dante (Devil May Cry). The name Axel (Guitar Hero) jumped up 24 positions. For Hispanic girls, green is the new pink. Names tied to natural elements either burst into the Top 100 list for the first time or surged in popularity: Rocio (morning dew), Paloma (dove), Violeta (violet), Fiorella (little flower in Italian), Diana (goddess of hunting and associated with forests), Aitana (name of a mountain range in Spain), and Delfina (related to dolphin). A strong Italian influence has also been identified in Hispanic baby names this year for both boys and girls.

I let my husband at the time pick out our daughter's name, which is Alanna. I gave her my name but added an "e" to the end of it for her middle name, Skye.
That was to make her a Sky, jr. Also in reference to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. I love celtic/gaelic names.

I think I'd go Corvin if I had a boy for the Hungarian raven reference/my relation by marriage to Matthias Corvinus Hunyadi on that side.

I think I'd go Aoife (pronounced ee-fa) for a girl to get a more positive Irish associated name into the family for a girl. It means beautiful/radiant/joyful and was the name of Cuchulainn's wife and mother of his only son, as well as being the greatest female warrior in the ancient Irish world. Popular over there but not really here.

I'll do my best to avoid having any though.

Daphne Elizabeth.

We wanted an uncommon first name and the middle name is after my mother-in-law.

I found Daphne when I got a work email from someone in Detroit named Daphne Esposito. We were struggling to find an uncommon name that we both liked. Thankfully we both liked Daphne.

Do you ever have a name you will never use because it reminds you of someone you thought was weird or didn't like.

Like there was this kid named Brad in Elementary School and he use to always walk around making weird Dinosaur sounds. Every time I hear the name I think of him and I could just never give that name to someone.

I just want you to know that a lot of my ancestry is swedish and danish, if you want to breed. You should know in advance that I am in no way capable of financially supporting any children we should have, but I would totally write them letters and stuff. Or you could just turn over at the last second and have what I like to call "chin children".

Edit: I'd like to apologize for my comments, but I consider myself to still be under the influence of your hips and ass.

Savannah Denise

Savannah because my wife was obsessing over baby names when she was like 2 months pregnant and kept bugging me to come up with names, and that one stuck.

Denise because my dad's name is/was Dennis and he died like 2 weeks before she was conceived. And it seemed to go well with the first name.

My oldest is Ashlyn Michelle. I had Ashlyn picked out from a young age; for some reason I knew I'd be having a girl. Michelle is her mother's middle name.

My second daughter is MaKinley Nikole. We didn't decide her name until she was almost born. We wanted something unique for her first name but struggled to come up with anything. I was coming home from an LSU game and passed McKinley High School in Baton Rouge and it grew from there. Her mama picked Nikole to flow with her first name.

Our baby I named Emma after I saw it on here one day. Heather (my wife) wanted to name her Elizabeth after her sister. I later switched the spelling to Alisabeth.

So I have Ashlyn Michelle, MaKinley Nikole, and Emma Alisabeth.

My twins are Caleb and Corbin.

The wife picked Caleb and I had to pick a C name. So I went with the 5th element. The wife agreed then later found out why I named him that.

She wants more kids, I'm saying no...not sure how long til the next one happens since what I say doesn't matter. I'd like a Xavier, won't happen because she doesn't like the fact that I pronounce it correctly (zavier) and she says the X(zavier).

I have two kids, but every person in my family has four names (this was my dad's idea -- for some reason, his parents didn't give him a middle name, so he made up for it by giving everyone two middle names. He was born in England, so maybe it was a British thing).

Son:
Nolan Isaac Tabor

Daughter:
Ellie Elizabeth Rose

I picked out Nolan, mostly due to Nolan Ryan. The wife picked out Isaac, and Tabor is my name.

I picked out Ellie, but I wanted to spell it Elly. Elly was a character in the video game Xenogears for the Playstation. The wife fought me to death, and eventually won and changed the spelling to "Ellie". Elizabeth is my wife's name, and Rose was one of the middle names my mammy was going to name me.

Daughter is Sabrina Anne. From the 1950's Audrey Hepburn movie. Our family was throwing names at us, but about 10 days before she was born, hubby woke up and said, "I dreamed we had a daughter. She was a ballerina, and her name was Sabrina." (I have pics of her in her pink leotard, tights and tutu :) )

Son is Jacob Andrew. I had been thinking Samuel Andrew, so the kids would have the same initials, but my daughter, who was totally in love with the movie 'Sixteen Candles' insisted we name him Jake Ryan. So we compromised..lol.

I've always liked my first name (Alana). My dad's name is Alan, but I'm not really named after him, more for the reason my mom heard it and liked the meaning behind it: It is of Old German and Hawaiian origin, and the meaning of Alana is "precious; awakening". A rather modern Latinate feminine form of Alan. Also possibly from the Gaelic "ailin" meaning "little rock."

But at work when people call in they always ask for "Yolanda, Alma, Yolana, Luana" etc.etc.. I don't know why but I'm pretty sure I enunciate properly and don't have a stutter.

As for my future kids names, I have some on lockdown which I will not utter until they are born so my relatives can't say a darn thing about their uniqueness.

I like boring names, I hate the name Madison, and I also severely dislike when people replace vowels with y. If you want to name your daughter Caitlin then name her Caitlin, not Kaytlyn like a stripper name.

Top boy names: Paul and William
Top girl names: Sophia and Lena

Middle names I like putting the grandparents names depending on the side (i.e. boys get the paternal father or paternal grandfather's name as a middle name, girls get the maternal mother or grandmother's name as a middle name).

I dont like the name Madison either. I want to go back in time to the set of whatever late 90's movie/tv series began to persuade the hipster cool, early 2000's parents that they were being super original. And murder said character. Also Mackenzie. wtf....

OMG bumpzor.

Clearly I have to have a daughter and name her Yfa now.

I just don't find Madison a particularly 'unusual' name. With the normal names, kids'll still find some way to make fun of each other and you might feel bored by it later in life.

I like Sophia though.

Freakonomics had one of their chapters dedicated to children's names and how they moved through economic classes.

Anyone else read it?

After re-reading some of the posts in this thread, I have to say the vast majority of you guys should not be allowed to have kids, and the ones that have already reproduced should be forced to turn them in. You guys are laying down the framework for a generation of douchebags and whores with names like this.

Male: Dutch, Dillion, Billy, Blain, Hawkings, Mac, Poncho, Hopper

Female: Anna

Alien: Predator

But in all honesty, I don't have any names that I am in love with. Just names that are terrible. If you are trying to give your kid a unique name with some ridiculous back story, you are being a total bitch.

I agree with what Nikki said a few posts up, for the most part. Common names and show some love to previous generations of your family.

I have actually decided I like the name Kaia (as in Ka-eye-uh) but I'm sure I'll find something wrong with it by the time I have babies.

I had to read it for a potential hospital internship (that I decided not to take after getting stuck with a bunch of needles) The first 5 chapters were pretty good.

My oldest is Aurora which is a super hard name to pronounce in the south it seems. No it's not after the northern lights, the car or sleeping beauty.

Then Sara Nicole, her dad picked that out.

Last is Cody Robert. If my husband had his way his middle name would have been Oscar so he could have the initials COC. He either wanted that or the first name of Thor....or Tank. Probably a ploy to get me to agree to the more normal name of Cody.

Excellent read.

That being said. I only considered boy names - because as a true man, it is only natural for my first born to be a son. ;)

Sean Alexander is what was selected. This one chosen over William Alexander as a second choice. We call him Alex for short.

My favorite of all possible names for a daughter is Seraphina, but it does not go with my Germanic last name at all. She'd probably go by Sera anyway though, so that would work fine.

I would strongly dislike having a name that is unlikely to ever be pronounced right. Aoife and Kaia? I would kill myself, then my parents.
I'd like a Xavier, won't happen because she doesn't like the fact that I pronounce it correctly (zavier) and she says the X(zavier). It's not Professor Zuh, it's Professor X. Cogito ergo demonstrandum loquitor.

Amelia Alta <-- my daughter's name. Amelia from a dream after I prayed. Didn't have this picked out at all. Her name was going to be something completely different but after the dream I just knew that this was right. Alta was picked out by her father; the name from a family member that passed away and is very loved.

My son will be Ayden Samuel. Ayden to honor his father's irish heritage and Samuel came to me after prayer.

Both of my children are mostly named after some now-dead relative; the Anne in LilyAnne just died the day after Thanksgiving this year, 2 years after my daughter was born (and 2 years later than we expected her to live). So we have one with a somewhat distinctive name, and now one with a more traditional name, Matthew. Though I don't know of a lot of baby Matthew's running around right now, not that the name was negotiable unless my uncle Matthew's widow and daughter objected.

I didn't know that Lily was getting so popular, though, or I might have rethought the name. I'm not a fan of way out-there names, but I do hate having to specify WHICH person with whatever name I'm referring to (like with Chris--3 close friends AND one of my brothers-in-law have that name--or Rachel--one close friend and my sister-in-law...or at work, having to ask callers to specify WHICH Sharon they're trying to reach so I can get the right one on the phone).
