Heh, I tried to Planar Shift the other day and ended up summoning a demon in IceMule. I thought I'd post a partial log here so everyone could see how it happened. Please note - I forgot to log it, so this is someone else's log of the event with my name X'd out.
>dust circle
You dust off a summoning circle.
Julesia studies a page of her leather book for a long moment before drawing five runes around the edges of a summoning circle and a solitary rune at its center with some fine crystalline chalk.
Julesia's crystalline chalk disintegrates!

[Icemule Trace, Town Center]
The bustling town comes together in this square. Halflings dressed in varying fashions stand about, some chattering happily, others reclining on cloaks laid on the ground. One ancient halfling leans against the base of the large ice statue of a mule, snoring blissfully. A feeling of community pervades the area, putting you immediately at ease. You also see a summoning circle, a spring badger, the Trishabelle disk, a corroded brass strongbox, a battered steel coffer, the Naitalya disk, the Dreaer disk, the Issirum disk, a braid of cracked wheat bread, some manna bread, a blanket of snow and a carved ice bench with some stuff on it.
Also here: Julesia, Lord Dargius, Sperro, Zannhart, Trishabelle, Lady Volfe, Torverner who is sitting, Lord Basmeran who is sitting, Rizzir, Weebey, Issirum, Naitalya, Quildor, High Lord Shize
Obvious paths: north, east, south, west
Julesia begins drawing a faint, twisting symbol as she utters an arcane invocation in hushed tones...
Julesia gestures at a summoning circle.
A small shadowy rift begins to take form before your eyes. Suddenly, a small black void floats out of the rift and stops directly over Julesia!
... 60 points of damage!
Chest heaves, lungs rupture ruining an otherwise good day!
* Julesia drops dead at your feet!
The white light leaves Julesia.
The very powerful look leaves Julesia.
The air calms down around Julesia.
The deep blue glow leaves Julesia.
The silvery luminescence fades from around Julesia.
A shadow seems to detach itself from Julesia's body, swiftly dissipating into the air.
Julesia becomes solid again.
The glowing specks of energy surrounding Julesia suddenly shoot off in all directions, then quickly fade away.
The light blue glow leaves Julesia.
The bright luminescence fades from around Julesia.
The brilliant luminescence fades from around Julesia.
A strong gust of wind blows away the chalky outline of a summoning circle.
The rift begins to waver lazily and suddenly implodes upon itself in a large plume of soot-filled black smoke. When the rift clears, a lithe black abyran'ra is standing around, surveying the surroundings.

Sperro cringes.
You gawk at Julesia.
The spirit of Julesia sighs softly, raising the hairs on the back of your neck.

You leave Naitalya's group.
Naitalya is already leading a group.

A lithe black abyran'ra scythes its talons back and forth as it hisses a sibilant invocation.
It then killed a bunch of people, of course.

Welcome to the club!
Since the spell has been released there has been less then 10 incidents of this happening.
I wish you had the log of it attacking the folks in town!
I would leave your name in. I know I took great pride unleashing the demon on Teras when I had that type of failure.
This is Sorcerery Science!

Glad you added your name to the log!
It would be awesome if the sorcerer didnt die and the demon gave them mad respect for unleashing them and then annihilated everything leaving the sorc alive.
Or if it possessed them or something.
Sigh
So who stopped the demon? I've been waiting a long time to rape one with my 9x maul.
Needs to be blessed weapon right?
8x blessed i believe. Mine's permablessed.

8x blessed i believe. Mine's permablessed.
When the demon first appears it needs to be 8x blessed as Brute mentioned.
If a sorcerer can phase it, you only need a 4x blessed weapon.
The longer the demon is in the realm, the enchant required to hit the demon will drop from 8x to 4x.

I was wondering. Did you get arrested afterwords? I am assuming you didn't. Icemule allows minor demons from spell 725 to wander without an illusion cast on it.
Zhelas was fined on Teras for 1 count of demonic summoning. I believe that was due to letting his demon permit expire.

To be honest they need to take it up with their mayor or council.
Icemule allows demons to roam freely without an illusion masking it.
You didn't "let it loose". The demon decided it needed to pay Icemule a visit.
To be fair, the sorcerer did play a major role in setting the demon loose.
I definitely think the sorcerer should be held accountable in at least some respect. They know the risks and it's up to them to make sure they take their chances in an area they're aware is heavily populated to get the maximum death count possible upon extreme failure.

One count of demonic summoning, regardless of the circumstances, is appropriate for the release of an Abyran'ra into the town.

I am not complaining that Zhelas got arrested. To be honest I was shocked that it was only 1 count of demonic summoning about a 48k fine. The demon that Zhelas released killed 2 folks and attacked two others. I expected endangering the public, 2 assault and murder charges. Didn't happen.
This is why I asked if she got arrested.

its more entertaining to release a demon in TC for certain.
my sorcerer always uses the summoning chamber in a local guild for the long trips, its probably only a slight bonus and yes if i unleashed a demon there wouldn't be any fun.

What I am wondering is why she is failing so often. Cause she is trying to travel so far, so often. The other night Julesia was coming to Icemule from Illy and the rift killed her.
I have been killed by my own rift or injured but have yet to unleash a demon.
Also, is it only possible to unleash on long distance travel?
Never thought about using the summoning chamber to travel, I aways use town center nodes.
How much fun would it be to fail to rift from the outside the North Gate and and watch the youngings die left and right.

Miscasts have potentially disastrous consequences. Sorcerers are urged to use caution, as rumor has it that failures can lead to unleashing an enraged demon upon Elanthia. Study in the lores of demonology can reduce the chance of mishap. Inter-realm teleportation has a base failure rate of 10%, reduced by 1% per every 12 demonology ranks
Probably the reason.

12-03-2010, 08:06 PM
Heh, to answer some of the questions:
1) I was not arrested for unleashing the demon, and I assume it's because demons are legal in IceMule;
2) I would have paid for that person's deed right up until the point where he told me he "expected" me to pay for it;
3) Quildor and Shize did the heavy work of killing the demon; and
4) Briar Fox, she's level 49 and has 49 ranks of Demonology Lores, which translates into a 4% reduction, or what should be a 94% success rate. Yet I've failed on quite a few casts lately. I'm wondering if encumbrance and/or frequency factors into the equation somehow. And I don't attempt to Planar Shift in summoning chambers for a specific reason, to wit: if I die in there, ONLY a Sorcerer can come get me because it's in the Guild and there may not be a Sorcerer willing/able to come get me. Therefore, I take the risk of Shifting from nodes rather than the risk of decaying. Selfish? Probably.
zhelas
12-03-2010, 10:34 PM
I personally think you are just having a run of bad luck. 94% chance of success is quite good.
When the game wants your blood there is nothing you can do about it.
I know there will be some folks screaming that it wasn't fair that you didn't get arrested. This might be true. But the spell came out in what 2005? And since that time there have been approximately what 8 or so incidents of epic failure? Not a common occurrence.
