I know there would be a slew of variables that would come into play but I'm trying to decide which weapon to make my main weapon based on ability to due damage and kill quickly. So, I'm lucking for opinions on which would be better for a paladin. A 5x perfect maul or 6x lance....discuss.

Thanks

This old chestnut again.

Lance: More raw damage.

Maul: Crush only

Use lance: If you plan to aim anywhere but the head or neck, or open swing.

Use maul: If you plan to aim mostly for the head/neck.

The biggest downside I see in using a lance is that you limit yourself to using polearms, and there are much nicer THW available for sale much more often. I like having the option to play around with multiple weapons without having to fixskill...

You a Warrior?
Nothing like Berserking with a nice Perfect Lance for crowd control.

Just wanted add: Once you get to the higher levels you wont be able to Berserk so much in some areas.

If you hunt in a place that doesn't swarm quickly, charge is a pretty radical maneuver, but at 7 seconds, it can get you killed.

I always prefer a claid. When zerking, you can't set things up. If a grimswarm casters or whatever turtles, you'll probably only be getting a rank 1 or 2 at which point the claid weighting would activate, whereas the lance wouldn't even stun.

That was my experience in Grimswarm.

Not to hijack the thread, Drew, but what movie (or show) is your avatar from? It looks like something I'd be interested in seeing.

Yep. I switched to a lance for a few levels expecting some awesome mstrike/berserk results, but I noticed considerably less stuns and went back to a claid. Also the mstrike RT/Recovery sucks when compared to a maul (or anything really).

What were you berserking against with the lance, Brute? When I was doing that in grimswarm camps I had nothing but spectacular results. Stuns and death crits left and right.

I think this changes dramatically as soon as spiritualists start spawning with WoF up, and decide to pwn you in the face with some god damn CS spell.

I've seen people run numbers on the mechanically best possible weapon, barring crazy rare stuff, and came up with a perfect 10x lance being the most effective... I suppose it's style of play though, numbers aren't always the end-all be-all.

Does the fact that the maul is perfectly forged and the lance is not make a difference in everyone's thoughts? Also, would the fact the lance has one more enchantment matter?

As of now I'm thinking of using the maul mostly because it will cost less training points. However, the lance has the extra enchant and charge f'n rocks......disuss.

The biggest thing I see, and nobody mentioned... Pole-arms (lance/awl-pike) are 9 second base roundtime, and the biggest THW is an 8 second base roundtime. Those factors considered, your dex/agi stats should help make this decision.

Anything people say is going to be purely preference, and based on their stats, society, and what they hunt. So here's one more!

I very recently switched from a forged maul to a claid. For berserking in warcamps, and hunting magicky cloth/leather things, the claid wins. For pretty much everything else, maul wins.

Even though claids are 8s and mauls are 7s, I see a huuuge difference in my mstrikes. Two swings with the maul was 7s, two swings with the claid is 9 (i have -4s from agidex). And anecdotally, my mstrike recovery time is a lot longer with the claid. I was seeing short times (10-20 sec) with the maul, and 30+ with the claid. That trend is only going to continue when you go up to the 9s of a lance :/

mstrike/berserk= lance
ambush/aim= maul

The agi/dex is a big deal though... and can really slow you down if your not built for polearms.

mechanically, I think lance comes out ahead compared to mauls. However...

I still prefer two handed weapons over pole arms, because I can use claids and mauls, vs. just lance.
