Is there a way to tell if you have an unfinished major job lying around? I'm gonna start a project after some time away but I don't know if I left an unfinished job.

Just try pouring a temper potion on the new item. It won't take the temper if you have another major project pending. Depending on how long you've been gone, it's likely that any major project you had going lost its temper and you're back to no project.
