Someone posted this on LNet the other day and I've been messing around with it recently. Try it out and post your high score. So far, I think I've gotten up to 118 WPM, though I seem to be stuck at around 100 regularly.

Ah. Only 60 wpm. It's strange typing words I don't usually have any business typing. Who cares if some guy got 126wpm in 1888. Generally most of the words I type are words that I always use. Get used to typing them, type faster.

Yeah.

For most people, to get much higher than 90wpm you have to use a Dvorak keyboard. Which lets you pretty easily get into the 110+ range.

I do this all on a 15 inch laptop. Wonder what a real keyboard would do.

How does a dvorak keyboard allow you to type faster?

A flux capacitor is attached underneath. Once you get to 88 wpm, well you have to figure the rest out.

The most used letters are more readily accessible to your main finger position. The qwerty keyboard was an ill-concieved design as far as efficiency is concerned.

edit: flux capacitor.

I don't think I could possibly switch keyboards now, but I'm at about 130 WPM with my laptop QWERTY keyboard.

You can always change your keyboard layout with the OS - it's hard to learn at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. I was just learning and might have got up to about 40wpm last time I tried to switch.

The only problem is you have to change all your keyboards on all your computers. So that means if you're in IT or otherwise enough of a nerd you have to change all the keyboards on all your computers, virtual machines and all servers you work on as well.

It's a big hassle. But fun if you're bored. Last time I did it, this cartoon came out, my boss saw it and gave me a bunch more work to do.
