Smart phones and text packages

Do you need a text package with smartphones these days?

Thinking of snagging one of the 1 cent droids on amazon, but if you can just IM people and shit, do you really need the text package for an extra $10?

Anyone have experience with these smarter phones than my old one? :(

I have a droid x and I have the media package, which is unlimited internet and aim on my phone. I have a text package of 250 text for $5 a month.

It depends on your contract and your provider. I don't see you buying a Droid for $0.01 without being forced to have a $30/mo additional data/text plan.

There's a 29/data plan - but I dont think the data plan covers traditional texts?

They usually don't, unfortunately. I pay extra on my iPhone for texts.

Not sure how the droid works. My blackberry package encompasses everything, media/text/im/email all that crap, so there might be a plan that does that

Verizon plan for me, with the first Droid: 450 minutes, 250 or so text and unlimited data works out to about $80 per month, (30 bucks for the data and 5 bucks for the text). I can see text plans going away eventually: as they say, "there's an ap for that."

If data plans start to supersede texting I will kill a whole lot of people. I have unlimited texting and no data because it's a total fucking ripoff. I use wifi for data connections and I have never been in a situation where I regretted not having a data plan.
