View Full Version : Poll: Amount of Sleep Each Night

After I banked a lovely 2 hours of sleep yesterday evening, I find myself wondering how little/much sleep the average PCer manages in a given night. Use the poll to put down your AVERAGE, but if you vary quite a bit between only a few hours then crashing for a whole day feel free to elaborate. I know some of you crazies keep odd hours.

I'm a night owl and an insomniac so while I don't get lots of sleep on the weekdays (sometimes as little as two hours or not at all) I sleep a LOT on the weekends.

I subscribe to the saying "you can sleep when you are dead". I feel like I waste my days if I sleep in, not that I can usually sleep in anyway, I'm so used to getting up early.

Sometimes 6, sometimes 8, most of the time 7.

I usually can't sleep more than 8 before I wake up.

I don't have classes on monday wednesdays and fridays until 12 so I can sleep until 10:30-10:45 no problem. I can even push it to 11

So on most days including the weekend I get around 8-9. On tuesdays and thursdays when I have to be out of my room by 9 I get about 6 hours of sleep because those tend to be the nights I end up staying up late.

I operate on very little sleep, thanks to my kids. In another year, I should be back to getting 6 hours a night, though, and I'll be happy.

In college I slept 10+ hrs a day.

Now I'm lucky when I get 7. My normal night is from 1am to 6am.

Jesus christ, go to bed earlier. Being an adult looks like it sucks.

I will kill myself if I ever become one of those people who aren't capable of sleeping into the afternoon. I rank sleeping as my favorite activity on which to expend my leasure time. My normal schedule has me usually going to bed around 1-2, and waking at 830ish. Many times I will stay up later, get very little sleep, then take a massive nap when I get home, or even better, go to bed at like 8:30PM and wake up around 8:30AM

I try for midnight but that becomes 2am very easily if I'm roused into going out. Anyone with tenure in Tallahassee knows it's got one of the best night lights (especially for your buck) of anywhere in the country. Tons of variety and always drinks for a dollar (or free with 6-8 dollar cover) and tons of hot girls (which can make it 3-4am). I'm always up about 730-8 cause the dog doesn't let me sleep later but I can usually con him into a nap before I go to work...so add another 30-45m at some point in the day.

The topic of the thread has nothing to do with naps or the ability/inability to take them.

I love naps. Especially on Sunday afternoons.

Usually get to bed somewhere after 11pm, and get up at 5am for the gym. I try to keep this schedule even on weekends because otherwise I am a miserable person on Monday. I should add the explanation that I'm typically a morning person, so it's much easier to get up at 5am than it is to stay up until 11pm!

And I have a physical inability to nap, sadly.

I usually get about 4-5 hours but I have a teething baby that refuses to sleep through the night so it's broken up. If i'm lucky I can get about 2 hours during the day when she naps.

I aim for 7 but frequently get less. Usually I can supplement a shortage with a solid 15-minute power nap in the afternoon. Unfortunately they are "modernizing" the offices here by replacing the walls with semi-transparent frosted glass. This is extremely upsetting, because anyone walking by one of these new offices can immediately tell if the occupant is slumped over his desk mid-nap. They haven't gotten to my floor yet, though, so there is still precious keyboard-drooling time to be had.

I have 8am classes this semester so I usually get ~5 hours (often less if I can't sleep, which is a lot lately) on nights before class. Otherwise I can get anywhere from 7-10 a night depending on how i'm feeling and what i've got to do that day. Although it's usually closer to 7 or 8 and rarely 10.

However only about 25% of that sleep is restful because 75% of it is spent listening to snoring and getting breathed on/elbowed/kneed.

I so miss sleeping alone sometimes, lol.

I've had problems sleeping the past couple of months. Usually it will take me forever to fall asleep, by that time it's usually 1am or later, and I have to be up by around 6am to get ready for school. If my commute wasn't an hour and a half I'd probably get to sleep some more. Thankfully I'm moving from NH to Medford next week!

I really do sleep horribly. I get up every morning at 5:30, regardless of when I get to bed, which ranges between 1045-1230. It doesn't matter when though, because I wake up several times every night. I'm a really light sleeper, and if an ant farts in the crawlspace I'm awake. Eeew.

In an attempt to 'catch up' which I know is pointless, I try to sleep in some on Saturday mornings. Might get 8 hrs then, if I'm lucky and drown the pets.

I'm never lucky. And I'd never drown the pets.

I think I can pull the bags under my eyes a full inch away from my face. Pretty cool.

Gonna bomb myself with sleeping aids on my somewhat day off starting Saturday evenings.

A physician told me something about "restful sleep" and that even if I do whatever it is I do, to pass out, I still might not be getting "restful sleep."

Both my general MD, social worker and F'ing dentist have recently told me to quit/start looking for another job. Eh.

I used to be able to go weeks on 4-5 hours. As Im rounding 30 Im starting to feel drunk at work if I get less than 6 hours of sleep for a week straight but I still only get 4 or 5 hours. Suprised so many other people are sleep deprived.

Actually on second thought its not all that suprising when you consider this message board started for a group of people who obsessive compulsively kill text monsters at 3 in the morning.

I voted 7 hours because that's what I normally get during the week, but that's nowhere near what I'd sleep if I had nothing to do. I'm just broken when it comes to sleep, or something. By the time the weekend rolls around, 5 days of 7 hours has turned me into a bitchy zombie, and it takes a couple days of sleeping 12+ hours to recover. I have no idea what the deal is, but I just can't function without an excessive amount of sleep.

This would be me as well. I tend to get on average 7 hours of sleep, give or take as I can be found napping during a movie prior to that. On the weekend I'd truly prefer if I could get around 10.

I've found the more physically active I am (working out, walking, whatever), I sleep better, and need less sleep. I think it's "restful sleep" as Stanley mentioned above, so since I get restful sleep I think that is what allows me to function on less hours.

I will say, when I was taking Ambien, I was NOT getting restful sleep. I was just getting knocked out. Once I got off it, and addressed my work and personal issues, I got back to regular sleeping habits.

I'm 7 hour sleeper this semester. I took the shitty mistake of taking a class before 12pm so I have to get up early. I'm a night hawk and don't like to go to bed till 4 or 5am.

Just last night I went grocery shopping at 2am. Thank god for 24 hour Sobey.

Four days a week I work overnight, 10pm to 8am, and then the other three days of the week I need to be up by 6:30 or 7am. At least once a week, 24 hour consciousness occurs. When I do get to sleep I usually average about 5 hours or so. Only a couple of more weeks in this term though and then I get to sleep more on my days off of work... until next term. I live in a feast/famine sleep cycle where famine is none and feast is between 7 hours to the rare and much loved 10 hours.

Lately I've been getting nearly 4 hours of sleep at night, and I would not say it was restful. I keep waking up with my hair a huge bunch of tangles and all sweaty. I want the long nights of sleep back!

6 hours.
I measure each portion of my days obsessively by chunks of hours either in sixes or threes.
I don't feel right unless I've had 6 hours of sleep and always plan on getting that amount unless I'm drunk.

I physically can't sleep in, even when drunk/hungover. I am awake at 7-7:30 no matter how light/dark it is outside.

I am probably going to bed around 11:30 at night during the week, so I am getting plenty of sleep.

Eight hours, hands down. Forget sleep debt. I can never repay it.

When production begins, forget my eight. For at least 6-8 months I am lucky to get five, plus going to different countries screws with your body clock.

I am a Nap Master, though.

Thurs-Mon I average 4 per night/day spread around all over like BUTTAH but rotten and chunky and gross and not at all satisfying and definately dont put it on bread.

I usually get 8-10 normal nighttime, wonderous, beautiful, lovely, orgasmic, temperpedic sleep hours on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

I am a Nap Master, though.

Also this. Anywhere anytime. Guns and bombs dont matter. But I do wake up to bob marley ring tone 4 sho.

If I lay on the couch I'm unconscious. Not much to hide. I need to hit Powerball so I can stay up all night and sleep all day! (Erm, but who doesn't need to hit Powerball...)
