Did anyone play any of the Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale games for the PC back in the day? What about other games in the Forgotten Realms settings? Which games from the series would you people recommend? They just rereleased Icewind Dale 2: Complete and I was thinking of picking it up.

I actually played a bunch of them while on business travel a few weeks ago.
I went through BG, BGII, NWN, NWN2, ID, and a few of the modules that came with.

All good entertainment.

I never cared for BG or BGII but the Icewind Dale games were really fun.

FUCKING PLANESCAPE TORMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not the era I immediately thought of when I saw "old".

I will second the recommendation of Planescape Torment. While it isn't set in the Forgetten Realms, I am pretty sure that Black Isle used the same engine. I am not a big fan of D&Ds magic or alignment systems and I Planescape did a good job of dealing with those.

Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 2, KOTOR (yes, it's part of that set).

I actually preferred one of the NWN expansions to NWN original. I forget which though.

Strahd's Possession... I think I liked it but it has been a long ass time since I played it.

Curse of the Azure bonds!!!

Older than any of that nonsense...and for looking like an atari2600 game it was actually pretty decent

He's talking about the 'new' old ones. I'd vote Curse out of that set too though.

Sounds like I am at that. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights 1-2, and I guess Pool of Radiance? I'm looking to play these games as I really enjoy the setting of FR. I figure it would be interesting to explore the history of the realm by way of the games which took place there.

Do not fucking play pool of radiance. It's the biggest fucking waste of time in the universe. Seriously.

Curse is worth it out of the 'classics.'

This.

PoR was plagued by some of the worst bugs around and I don't think they ever got patched.

Secrets of the Silver Blades - I grew up to that game.

Pools of radiance is about as best textbook D&D game as I have seen - sadly, the bugs sucked :( but I enjoyed the music and game play for the most part.

Yeah, I agree. Curse was probably the best one out of the old gold box series. I also liked the eye of the beholder series. Westwood studios did that. Lands of lore used the same engine.

The Icewind Dales are way, way more hack + slash/hunting/leveling focused, IMO.

Whereas BG 1/2 and Planescape Torment have excellent storylines, etc, etc.

I own more Forgotten Realms novels than any human has a right to. The setting is STILL fresh, too; the Spellplague is/was a super awesome idea.

Not a Forgotton Realms game, but if you haven't played the new version ( 6 years ago? ) version of "The Bards Tale" you're missing out.

Similar gameplay AND you get some awesome voiceovers

Completely agree with 'The Bard's Tale' great game. Still remember playing the old one on my old 286 with svga graphics. It was the best.

There was a pretty cool D&D arcade game at one time, I forget the name of it, but it had multiple story paths you could take and various outcomes that were based on in game decisions you made. It was fun and quite the quarter sink.
