So...I'm trying to watch Kill Bill while I script hunt rats, and it won't play because I don't have a DVD decoder. I have a DVD drive, so that's not the problem, but I need software. And I'm so broke I can't even pay attention.

So, are there any working free DVD decoders out there?

Oh...it needs to work with XP Home.

Don't most systems have a dvd player installed?

I may well be misunderstanding your question, so if so my apologies.

Ours did when we bought it a few years ago, but since then we've upgraded the OS and reinstalled about 6 or 7 times.

I'm not entirely sure what it is your asking here....

But I suspect that what you might be looking for are the codecs required to view the movies....

Get the needed codecs here

http://nimo.titanesk.com/modules/news/

I hope that helps

They are free and not pirate software, the MS site only allows downloads of the codecs that they themselves program, unfortunately a very small number of movies will play on them.
