View Full Version : Hulu and Netflix ideas

I am going to be moving soon and I've not had cable or internet in my home for some time now. I have recently checked into Hulu and netflix and I'm going to be moving toward that route I believe, unless of course people have better ideas here.

My questions pertain to what's the best way about sending Hulu and netflix from my Ethernet connection to my TV/reciever sound system. I don't mind going the wireless route or directly cabled units. The problem I have is I don't want to send everything through either my laptop nor my tower computers. My TV is a Sony Trinitron 36" flat screen(the heavy bastards) it's some what outdated as to the hook ups in the back I believe it's a 1996 model. The picture is a beautiful picture still and I intend on keeping the TV as I hate the newer digital picture colors from the LCD screens.

My family uses a WII for their netflix, I have no desire to have a WII console. I wouldn't mind going with an Xbox 360 system if it handled both Hulu and netflix. I don't mind going the route of an aftermarket TVO(spelling?) or something of the such.

So basically what consoles or systems should I be after to reduce lag times and simplify user controls without having to route through my computers?

Any suggestions or comments would be handy:help:

Thanks,
Cylas

P.S. too bad I didn't move in last month I'd be at EG :(

Get a Western Digital MyTV or whatever they're called, they have video outputs and USB/ethernet connectivity for input streams.

Fuck Hulu and Netflix, get a Usenet account.

Then download everything you want and run a DLNA server on your computer, let the WD box pick it up over your network (it has a remote and a visual interface to select files) and output to the TV.

Noting that I've never used any of these devices since my TV has DLNA built in (the process itself works and is very efficient):

Netflix and Hulu will soon have Hulu plus on a device I use called the Roku. You can get one for about 70 bucks. Its pretty great and while I'm not a huge TV fan, my kids like that they can pick whatever they want to watch.

Its definitely less expensive than cable.
