I think we can all suspend belief for a bit, or at least have to, when bolas are shooting from crossbows and magical chain entangling bolt thingies.

Also, they're auto-loading-repeating-crossbows. Duh!

Certainly amusing but it's really a matter of using a ranged weapon in ranged combat. The proper use of that crossbow in frame two is butt-to-nose bludgeoning rather than reloading.

You fire a heavy crossbow bolt at a kobold!
AS: +529 vs DS: -27 with AvD: +36 + d100 roll: +13 = +605
... and hit for 189 points of damage!
Incredible shot to the eye penetrates deep into skull!
The kobold cries out in pain one last time and dies.
The guiding force leaves you.
The scintillating white light surrounding the bolt fades away.
The heavy crossbow bolt sticks in a kobold's right eye!
