iPhone's shitty spellcheck?

I have a 3g, on 3.1.3 and for some reason 3 days ago the spellcheck decided to stop working. It'll spell check id to i'd, but wont change wgat to what, or dpnt to dont.. I REALLY dont want to update to 4.1, cause it slows down the 3g alot. Anyone have this problem before? Any help is appreciated. I guess if I cant find a fix ill just update to 4.1

Im not with AT&T and I heard its really hard to unlock the 3g on 4.1.. When they find a easy way to unlock im for SURE switching.
