View Full Version : GS community vs. everyone else

I was just putzing around here on the PC, after getting some good advice from a complete stranger in (and out) game. Got me thinking about all those times other games Ive played over the years.
Made me realize... people are DICKS!
when I played couther-strike, I was never able to get help from any other gamer when I wanted to learn how to re-skin my weapons. Create a map? forget about it!
If you went on the forums, there might be 2 people reading.. and most of the posts pure flame! and thousands of people were playing the game at that time.
Come here, to my tiny little MUD, with its 400 people playing on a good day, and get help with every question I have ever needed to ask. Look on the PC any time of the day and you will see 10 to 40 people on these forums, and most of them somehow being constructive to the game.
I just wanted to throw out a Golden Kobald for this WHOLE community of people. We are varied, passionate, and few.. But its plain as day we have the best group of people playing as reasonably possible.
The GS fan is just a notch smarter, pleasent (mostly), and more fun than any other gamer group out there. (mostly because we read I think)
But kudos and congrats to everyone whos ever helped out somone in GS.

Yes, people who play or have played GS are win. We know this :D
I think this may be the first post not by a regular I've ever seen that essentially boils down to, "The PCs is good people." I'm touched.

I've never seen someone with so few posts have such high rep. Love the green love!
This community is why I came back to GS and why I will likely be here, sinking money and time into it until it burns out. Even then, I hope we all can continue on to whatever the next threshold is.
It's been great playing with you guys and I hope, through the resurrection and continuation, for many years to come.
I'll take his thank you post to say Thank You as well.

One thing GS lacks at the moment is that ubergamer 12 to 15 year old prick demographic that was present back in the game's heyday, even though occasionally one comes through (Michaelous, Ratolin, etc).
When I started playing GS in like 96, that was me, but the new generation is all up in their Halo and CoD and Madden, not text-based glory.

SuckerFish

I would say pink resonates more with me as the color of love than even red does. But....that's debatable.
Anyways, regarding other games communities. I was playing MTG Online last night and I asked this one guy I was dueling if he had any Leyline cards I could trade with him. These cards are very valuable because if you have one in your hand when you begin the game, they automatically go onto the battle field with no mana cost. And they give all of your creatures +0 +1.
The kind I was looking for was green. These are rare cards by the way, with the gold symbol in the middle showing that they are. Anyways, this guy was MORE than generous because his reply was, "sure, in fact I have 6 of them, you can take two for free." I first asked him if he was serious because I couldn't believe someone would be so nice for nothing in return. Than he goes on to say that, "Yeah, I don't even use them anyways. I spend most of my time on Ebay buying sets for $5 a pop." So than he proceeds to tell me that I could take 20 of any of the cards on his trading roster which I wanted to. This also blew me away. I responded by telling him that I couldn't do that, but that I could take 10. lol. He laughed and then he told me, "No problem."
So I proceeded to select the cards from his collection that I needed, and the guy was just like, "Sure. I get commons and uncommons all the time. No problem." I felt bad even then so I told him that when I get a bunch more cards I will give them to him for free as well.
I have only been playing for two weeks and I already have 6 close buddies on my buddy list that I trade in the game with. Each of them has been very generous and always understanding when I trade with them.
This is the kind of community I would have created this post for. Sure, in GS4 people talk to each other all the time, but so do they in MTG. In fact, If you're going to compare a community to GS4 with, than MTG online would be the game to do it with in my opinion.
I'm not lying to you guys. I have virtually been stunned on many occasions for people just literally GIVING me cards because they knew I could use them. Try getting the equivalent of 10 rare cards for free in MTG, probably what would be like handing someone an imflass claid in GS4 (which would on most occasions never happen in GS4), and then you will see what I mean.
My only question for you guys who are spending hundreds of dollars per year on GS4 for the "community" aspect of it is, why in the World aren't you playing MTG online right now? You would have already amassed an amazing collection of cards by the same token, and you could make just as much money selling off your really good ones as you could selling coins and such in GS4 in the long run.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up for an account, get your password, get your FREE event tickets (you can use them for getting new cards or for shopping in their store), get their FREE hundreds of cards (they aren't always the same for everybody which is cool because then people get different cards to use, trade, etc.), and start having fun in seconds.
WARNING: The game is extremely addictive. I haven't been getting much sleep at all because I stay up for hours just sifting through my cards and building decks that can take on the elite decks in duels. My goal is ultimately to be able to enter tournaments though so or possibly to join a clan. The top 5 clans are always listed right when you sign in so you know which ones are doing well.
Oh and I mentioned this before in a different thread, but make sure to sign up for their rewards program too. It doesn't hurt to get free promotional stuff every month including cards you can use in your decks.
Does GS4 come with ANY of the kind of perks that you get with MTG online? No. It doesn't. So what's your guy's excuse for not playing MTG then? What because you have already sunk money into it? Don't let yourself get trapped like that anymore. Don't keep feeding the beast that is blocking your path and won't let you escape. Let it die so that you can get away from it. It's fools gold. That's all it is.

By the way I noticed a lot of people here use the avatars from MTG. I would too, obviously they have some of the best sketches available for sorcerers, etc. GS4's can be a bit cheezy at times.

Hello I was asked recently to come here and lend support for a good friend of mine who goes by the name of SuckerFish here on these forums. I would like to first start by introducing myself if that's ok. My name is Victor Mcarthur and I am an animal care specialist for a company called http://www.mckenziebrysonandmarshall.co.uk/48.html and most of the work I do is hands on but we do specialize in animal growth and development where we are available for emergency procedures as well as just random procedures to suit our client's needs.
I believe Bob has done some good things in this thread covering the subject of Magic but I believe he left a few things out of the loop with his comments.
What Bob seems to keep leaving out here is the basics. For example, you may know that Magic: The Gathering, the card game that Magic Online is based on, is a competitive dueling game in which two or more players face off against their opponents in an attempt to defeat them using a variety of different cards representing magic spells. Each player begins the game with 20 life points, which can be reduced by direct magical assault or by the attacks of summoned creatures that are rated according to their power (the ability to deal damage) and toughness (the ability to withstand damage). Players can cast enchantments that can have permanent effects, and they can also make use of magical artifacts. Turns pass between players until someone's life total reaches zero, or someone runs out of cards. Achieving victory is based as heavily on technique as on the color or colors of magic chosen. There are five colors of magic: white, green, red, blue, and black. White magic is that of healing and light, green represents the forces of nature, red signifies chaos and fire, blue is the color of water and thought, and black embodies death and decay. In order to tap into these forces, players must make use of natural resources that channel this energy--plains for white, forests for green, mountains for red, islands for blue, and swamps for black. Play commences with each player drawing a hand of cards, then taking turns placing down land cards, one per turn, and rotating them in order to release mana points, which pay for spells.
So those are the basic components of the game. Starting with the bottom up I have found in my life is particularly helpful to new players who can't quite grasp an entire concept without first having the basic details at their disposal.
I'll leave the rest up to Bob and by the way I must say I checked into your website over at www.gemstone3.com and it does indeed look like a promising game although with work and Magic Online I do run into problems with having the time I need to put into these things.

That link takes you to a site about horse castration ... and there's no one at that company named Victor Mcarthur. They don't even have anyone there that's an "animal care specialist". You specialize in animal growth and development? Really? What does that sort of work entail? Did you give up smoking to afford your computer to finally make this post?

Candles is the best bet. Very tall ones. Last about 5 days a shot. 52 weeks to a year I believe it is? $200 worth of candles should take care of a years worth of lighting at the expense of about 3 candles per week.

And yes I have already done my own experiment. I lit the candle every night when it got dark and let it burn until the Sun came up in the morning.
After about 3 days worth of lighting it, it was half way gone. However there were a few cases where I let slip about 1 or 2 hours of darkness go by. So that's where I came up with the 5 day figure for all 3 candles to be completely out of wax.
Where can you get these types of candles? Mexican stores, discount stores, etc.
I've already purchased all of mine.
As I mentioned before there is no need to worry of deterioration, of spills, of explosions, or of batteries.

Candles is the best bet. Very tall ones. Last about 5 days a shot. 52 weeks to a year I believe it is? $200 worth of candles should take care of a years worth of lighting at the expense of about 3 candles per week.
Very tall? How tall is that? How thick too? Or does thickness not matter and all candles of the same height, regardless of thickess, will burn at the same rate?
I am very very worried about batteries. I believe an open flame left burning while I'm sleeping causes me less anxiety than the batteries in my tv remote.
I'm kind of questioning whether or not 3 candles will provide sufficient light. For more light, do you recommend tearing up my t-shirts, soaking them in liquified animal fat, wrapping them around branches, lighting them, and then hanging them from my walls? EDIT: I have done this and it looks like this:
http://jillwilliamson.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/burning-torch1.jpg
This provides me with adequate lighting. I have yet to ask my HOA if it's ok that I use this energy efficient way of lighting my house. I should patent the idea lol I bet I'd get an energy star rating. I was even able to read a book by it while my girlfriend played LOTR: Online in the next room last night. If you don't know what this is, I recommend you look into playing it. She just signed up last week and already loves it more than I've ever loved a dying game, called www.gemstone3.com (http://www.gemstone3.com). It's also free to play, which is cheaper than GS by at least 60%. I'm jealous because while I had to cut back to 6 packs a week to support my gemstone, she keeps smoking at a pack a day and yesterday said "I can have twenty today but you can't because you're waiting for two worlds, the second installment" and I thought that was funny but it is true at the same time.
The game's milieu is based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hobbit). However, Turbine does not have rights to any other works in Tolkien's legendarium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolkien%27s_legendarium), such as The Silmarillion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Silmarillion) or The Children of Húrin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Children_of_H%C3%BArin).[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_Online:_Shadows_of_Angmar#ci te_note-3)
Much of the gameplay is typical of the MMO format: The player controls a character avatar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(computing)) which can be moved around the game world and interacts with other players, non-player (computer-controlled) characters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-player_character) (or "NPCs") and other entities in the virtual world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_world). Camera angles can be switched between first-person and third-person options. Characters are improved by gaining levels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_(video_gaming)). A character's level increases after it earns a set amount of experience points (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experience_point) through the player versus environment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_versus_Environment) (or "PvE") combat and storyline adventures. Characters' abilities are improved by increasing in level, but character skills must be purchased from specified NPCs after gaining a new level.
The main storyline (also known as the "Epic Quest Line") is presented as a series of "Books", which consist of series of quests called "Chapters". There were initially eight Books when the game was released, with new books added with each free content update.
Tolkien's Middle-earth as represented in The Lord of the Rings Online implements magic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_(Middle-earth)) in a different manner than other MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft). There are only five "wizards" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizard_(Middle-earth)) in the fictional world, none of which are player-controlled. Instead, there are active skills which require "power" (the equivalent of magic points (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_point)). Some skills behave like magic (like healing or throwing a burning ember at an enemy), but are based on "lore".[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_Online:_Shadows_of_Angmar#ci te_note-4) In addition, objects and artifacts are used to create effects similar to magic.
Other features include a fast travel system and a detailed quest log with tracker and history.
They even have PvP called "monster play" which is more real than in GS because I too call it "monster play" when I see PvP in real life.
If you play LOTR let me know and I'll give you my girlfriend's information. If you like to read books by firelight, let me know too and maybe we can swap information on your favorites. I like any books published by Random House.

You want to get the tall ones that are fat and circular around. You know the kind that look like they come from Tiajuana or whatever and they have pictures of Saints and stuff on um? I call them the Catholic candles. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. They are tall, round, and have glass containers that they come in. I'd say from looking at them they are probably sold at most Mexican stores. I know they are sold at Wally World (Wal-Mart) as well. These are the ones I did my experiment with. There are other candles, short, VERY round, that I thought about using, but those were like $5 a pop and yes that would have cut into my cig money. So I went with the ones that were like $1.45. They are also known as the "Christmas candles" in my family when you don't have much money and you are looking for a Christmas gift at Wal-Mart for someone and suddenly it dawns on you that they sell the "Christmas candles" in the home decor department over in Wally World and you can pick up a $5 book as well to throw into the mix.

Oh yeah! The ones that look like they come from Tijuana. I know the ones at my Wally World. We also have a dollar store that's owned by real mexicans and sometimes they have mexican specific items, like catholic candles that are REAL REAL tall and fat too. I heard you shouldn't burn down these candles past the saint because it's really bad luck!
Also, at your Wally World (Wal-Mart), how much do you pay for cigs? I wonder if it's cheaper than I pay and if they'd work out a special deal for me where they'd mail a few cartons to my house. I already sent a PM to Victor Mcarthur too.
Oh shoot. My baby's waking up so I have to stop posting here and stop playing Assassin's Creed II for the Xbox360 (which I think is a good game and I will send a lot of wikipedia information about to these forums later) but sometimes when she sleeps I play excitebike for the old NES on the emulator on my Dell brand computer.

Excitebike had to be one of the best games ever created for NES.

It's as good a game as Victor Mcarthur is an animal care specialist at growth and development.

I am shocked. I opened the thread and saw "people are DICKS" and expected it to be another one with "OMG YOU PC PEOPLE ARE FUCKING THE LARGEST TROLLMONGERING TROLLY TROLLS OF TROLLDOME EVAR!!!!ONE!! WHINE BITCH CRY" but wait...we are nice? Huh? What? Apparently you've never met Tisket, Nien, nor PB.
Yeah, I imagine you were a little concerned there for a moment. You wouldn't want any competition for being the biggest whiny pussy bitch of the PC after all. It's okay though, you are still the champ.
