Just watched this for the first time a few days ago and I have to say, the movie is incredible visually, especially for being made in 1968, but wtf happened at the end?

The book was a lot better than the movie. The first movie was probably okay back when 30 minutes of footage of the spaceship spinning set to the Blue Danube was "awesome." I can't watch 2001 without fast forwarding. 2010 is a much more modernly paced movie. Pity they never made 2063/3001 into movies.

The books go into a lot more detail about the monoliths, what created them. They're worth reading.

I'm not being a smart ass here, but it makes a lot more sense if you are a little high. Failing that, yes, read the book.
