So I'm trying my hand at forging. I've got the crafting out of the way, but before I move on to actual forging, I need to make myself a hammer.

Right now, I'm operating under the assumption that I should go perfect or go home. I managed to make a perfect handle and head, but just a normal success on the vice so I only have a superior (mithril) forging hammer.

Is the extra bonus from a perfect hammer worth the time and effort, or should I just move on to forging now? Also, is there any way to know the quality of a forging-hammer once it's been completed? APPRAISE no longer seems to show the quality, it just gives me the "best to take this to someone who specializes in that sort of thing" message.

On the topic of forging...I'm having an unbelievably hard time finding a guide that will simply spell out the sequence of commands for forging. I wanted to try and write/alter a script to rank myself up, but I can't even figure out what all the steps are. So far, I've gathered the following:

1. Buy a glyph
2. Buy raw material (I'm planning to skill up with bronze)
3. Go into a workshop, then into the forge
4. Pour water into the trough
5. Hold my raw material in one hand and stare at my glyph (do I need to be holding it in the other hand for this?)
6. Hold my raw material in one hand and my forging-hammer in the other and GET TONGS
7. Wait and pray for a perfect result

What am I missing? Should I wait on the perfect forging hammer? Anything else I should know?

Is there already a script that will do all this for me? Dan's dforge was great for skilling up crafting (thanks, dood! :D), but I didn't see a forging counterpart.

Scripts I used a few years ago to master crafting and forging.

Not super elegant, but worked well enough that I could just kick it off before bed and wake up with more ranks. Still took like two months of constant scripting to finish everything.

And yeah, you will want a perfect hammer if you're forging, it doubles your chances of making a perfect (or something ridiculous).

You don't have to hold the glyph, no.

Yes you want a perfect hammer, it increases your likelihood of getting a best piece.

If you use Stormfront, I have a script. I assume there are some in Lich as well, but I don't use it so I can't confirm that.

with a perfect hammer, your chances of getting a best piece blade doubles.

a perfect hammer will always have perfect in the description unless you've used the polisher to change the description.

i would tell you to google spendel's site, but sadly he doesn't maintain the site anymore. it was a great resource for the steps as well as almost all the stats regarding forging times/weight/ etc.

most people will try to make their own perfect hammer, but i got fed up with the process and just bought a hammer from a player shop.

if you do buy a hammer, theres an attuning process similar to weapon bonding. but if you use the hammer to hit 500 in an artisan skill, you should have no problems bonding to it.
iirc, you get a message saying something to the effect of you've gotten used to the weight of the hammer. took me about 409 ranks for that to happen.

No shit, that's how you "attune" to someone else's perfect hammer... that's awesome information.

Well, I went to the site the other day and while you can't navigate the pages from the web, you are still able to download the raw HTML files (which I did).

Separate question while we're talking about forging...is there an in-game command to show you how many ranks you've achieved or do you have to keep track of the "Aha" messages manually?

artisan skills
In the skill of forging - crafting, you are a master with 500 ranks.
In the skill of forging - one handed edged, you are a novice with 86 ranks.
In the skill of forging - two handed weapons, you are a master with 500 ranks.
In the skill of fletching, you are a master with 500 ranks.

You dont NEED a perfect hammer to work up a weapon type but it doesnt hurt to get it out of the way first. I got my perfect hammer by making 5 "best" handles and heads and then started putting them together in hopes that 5 quick attempts would work better than doing them 1 at a time. Got my perfect hammer on the third attempt.

>arti skill
In the skill of forging - crafting, you are a master with 500 ranks.
In the skill of forging - pole arms, you are a highly skilled laborer with 499 ranks.

PROBABILITY DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. GOODNIGHT.

Um, if you have perfect pieces, no matter who made them, the VICE makes the perfect hammer/weapon. So, either way works just fine. TO each their own.

Im well aware it doesnt but there was a lot of debate on LNet the day I was making my hammer about whether it was better to do it as I did or go about making the two pieces and combining each time. In the end my way worked out for me.

He was just doing the interwebz thing trying to point out that doing it (A + B = C)*5 has no better odds than (A*5)+(B*5)=(C*5). In the end the math that mattered to him was Post Count +1...

Honestly I just like linking that video.

But it still made no difference on the outcome. I do the same thing, but only because it's easier to just let my script that makes best pieces run and not pay attention to it, and sometimes you get super special bonus perfects if you get really lucky!

I tend to ignore youtube links here.

Or he was trying to dissuade a completely false assumption from propagating in an amusing manner*

*completely subjective, I know.
