A lot of the dead's songs count as alt country imo.

Anything by the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies? That's about as much alt country as I go.

The real question is... What is country? How do you classify it?

Do you count Chris Ledoux as "alt" country?

pabstblueribbon
10-03-2010, 05:51 PM
Sure. Maybe the thread should be underground/alt.

Whatever you don't really hear on the radio.

Anything with country origins. Elvis, Roy Orbison. Etc.

I want to trend towards American Folk... home grown Americana with influences from the south, blue grass, rhythm & blues, singing songs about the American experience. Not some stereotypical “my girl friend ran away, my dog just died, my truck broke down and I’m outta Jack” bullshit...

So, to me, here are what I consider True American Folk artists...

Black Crowes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S66eQlP_wz4)

M. Ward (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIMVxQy0mCU)

Beck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgSPaXgAdzE)

That's a stretch. I wouldn't count Black Crowes or Beck. Crowes is.. blues/rock. Nothing terribly country about them and Beck well...

Yeah. If you said something like, Mellencamp, okay, Americana.. but.. eh. I would also count some of Bob Dylan.

Ruling on the field, is no. New-yorkers that wear scarfs are probably not going to contribute much to this thread.

I forgot about Cross Canadian Ragweed. Good stuff there.

Los Lonely Boys may be worth looking into. Otherwise, I'm drawing a blank. I'm not sure if it's the local station or CMT Radio syndicating it, but our GOOD Country station has a program some time when I'm never near a radio devoted to Alt Country and stuff you'd likely never hear on a major radio station otherwise.

And... seriously?? Am I the ONLY person who immediately knew what "alt country" means???

^Yes. This thread made me think umm....I think I've heard some mountain bluegrass this one time in some hillbillys bronco in alaska. It was good. And for the record there is nothing creepier to listen to in a bronco with a stranger than a slow drumming banjo.

Suck a D. Here I come.

Peam covered Tupelo, but it was on all of our minds cause I can't even say the word 'alt-country' without some asshole friend of mine just screamin tupelo like it was the crizzunk (deservedly, Tupelo does rule).

Anywho, far beyond me to start trippin over what is and what is not alt-country, insurgent country, americana, etc. we'll just fuckin say it's whatever shit is not played anywhere near the CMA's or anywhere on the radio this side of a cool-ass station.

I'm guessing Back was talking country Beck? Like on Mutations or Sea Change? It's a stretch. Although I'm not even hanging too tight with M. Ward, who I think is pushing way further towards Folk than Country.

Anyhow, LINKT:

I'm a gimp for Whiskeytown:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54X5uGVjYuY

and Ryan Adams in general:

If you ever listen to one alt-country album about mechanical steel horses learning they have hearts and real feelings and so won't participate in a war on behalf of men make it Rock Plaza Central's Are We Not Horses

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojiZ9EFMQM8

Eh, bonus new-style Loretta Lynn for the hell of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuC_l3ymXhM

And I guess like thousands more and much "TRUER" present-day alt-country. Does anyone care about alt-country?!?!? Besides the guy with HW3 as his avatar?

Suck a D here you come? Well if you say so.

New-York city???! Get a rope.

I dunno if anyone cares about alt-country or not. If they did, it wouldn't really be alt-country I guess.

I wasn't into the Drank LIke a River tune. I'll try some other stuff of his though.

Pnemonia by Whiskeytown is one of the best albums ever. Particular Whiskeytown songs I'd recommend off the top of my head (I'd youtube it if I weren't on my cellphone):

Jacksonville Skyline

Houses on the Hill

Avenues

Midway Park

I keep wishing he'd stop fucking around with these iJin-approved side projects (I'm pos-Raconteurs, neg-Death Weather) and get to the real business of making some more fucking tunes with Loretta. God that album kicks.

I read this like the old dudes used to say it around the campfire in those Pace Picante Sauce commercials. NEW YORK CITY?

I like your Haggard and Earle buddy! At least we can agree on that?

Now make scripts with GUI you hick fuck.

Well.. you did suggest Los Lonely boys.....

:p

I also said may regarding them, though you have to realize that my radio market blows balls and there's a lot they'll start putting into rotation MONTHS after I've already worn it out on the mp3 player. And even though I can't seem to name any artists/songs/albums to save my life at the moment, I know what not to include in "alt country". :p

And I was--and still am--drawing a huge blank. If I had most of my normal brain function, I would have remembered Cross Canadian Ragweed and "Van Lear Rose".. man, that album was NOT what I would have expected of Loretta Lynn for some reason.

Old Crow Medicine Show, or Romantica, (who's latest album is called Control Alt Country Delete), for a little more modern take on Alt Country, or really Blue Grass in OCMS's case. You could maybe say the same for The Avett Brothers too.

Heh! I'm checking this out based on that album title alone.
The Avett Brothers too.Oh man the latest album (Rick Rubin at the helm) is kinda mega-over-produced. But I'm still a fan.

It was a bit of a change for them, but it's still a heck of an album. Some great songs.

Romantica is not nearly so upbeat, but they're local so I had to give them a plug. I like their sound.

Local's good! I'm headed back to Minneapolis for a wedding in a week or so. Meanwhile I have totally secured two seats at "THE STADIUM" to watch the Twins finish off the Yankees (THAT'S RIGHT) in the 3rd game. Hopefully the corporate-seat Yankees fans don't cut me for celebrating.

Oh, and Son Volt, offshoot of Uncle Tupelo, is pretty awesome too.

There's this other offshoot of Uncle Tupelo some people might have heard of called Wilco, though their latest stuff isn't very country anymore. Just saw Jeff Tweedy live this summer and he busted out an Uncle Tupelo song as usual.

Been a fan of Old Medicine Crow for a while.

And Splitlip Rayfield. Used to go to Winfield bluegrass fest every year.
