If I wanted to produce light without electricity for about a week or two, what would be more practical? A Karoseen Lantern or like 50 candles?

How long does the wick in a kerosene Lantern last for?

How much fuel is needed per lighting session in a kerosene lantern? How long will it burn for with how much fuel?

How long will one bottle of kerosene last me with a kerosene lantern?

Anyone know?

I already did that but I couldn't find anything on it.

Planning for Armageddon?

Seems like the whole World is planning for Armageddon. But I'm curious about this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the info Nocturnal.

Right now I am leaning towards buying the supplies for making my own lanterns or getting LED lights with a ton of batteries for them.

Now it's just down to which option is cheaper.

The LED option might just turn out to cost less than the supplies would in the long run.

I take that back. It looks like batteries run off of electricity so that's not going to work. Even though it is a chemical reaction that causes the electrical charge, it appears to be the electrical charge that will be null and void.

So fire is the only way to go. Lanterns it is.

Candles are messy, they only burn for like 1 night, the wax is very hard to clean up, you can't reuse them...or can you? Is all a person needs is another wick? And then you can re-use the same wax from the night before?

You can generate electrical current to charge the batteries without having an outlet... build yourself a generator-bike for your apocalypse-shelter.

Get a large propane tank, a propane post, and a (obviously) propane lantern, and assemble.

Light lantern.

You can also run a heater and a stove off of it with some hoses.

Very good news.

See but then it appears that this website is saying that the wax of candles can be re-used over and over. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_wax_of_used_candle_be_reused Now if that's true, than candles are the best bet. All I need to do is buy some candle wicks, a ton of them, and test this theory out for myself.

This website is even going so far as to say that the wax can be reused over and over because it has never actually been burned and that the only wax that was burned was what you see with the soot flame:

Yeah but then again, I still remember small candles burning completely out and leaving no trace of wax within a single night. That means that only large candles would work, and the larger the candle, obviously the more expensive.

But....with candles...you don't need to worry about explosions. Or leaking, or deterioration.

So I'm thinking candles it is.

lol. With a candle, I become invincible. Without it I lose my superhuman powers.

This is hilarious. What the hell is with this guy... I'm pretty sure candles have more wolves.

Do you honestly think that you've discovered some sort of perpetual energy machine whereby we could solve all the worlds energy problems through candles?

Wax melts, then evaporates, then combusts, it is consumed just like any other fuel.

Are you serious? Batteries don't run off of electricity. Did you ever take physics? They use a type of plasma (called amp - but not the same that's in the drink). Running through the "wires" (only called wires because they look like your house wires that transmit electricity, but they're really small tubes), they reach a transparent portion of the LED called the "ohm". Only the part of the tube that's in the LED is transparent so no light is wasted. Depending on the type of plasma used, you can get different colored lights (blue is my favorite, it uses a type of plasma called "Infin-8 helix")

Since it looks a lot like a regular light bulb, they compare the light provided to regular bulbs and will say "this is comparable to a 70 watt light bulb". The light given off by LEDs is called "volts" to distinguish between the two energy sources.

You don't want to use candles. The good candles, the ones you can reuse that is, contain rare earth elements which allow the wax to be reused. These elements are currently mined in China and not in an environmentally friendly fashion ... so you're giving money to China AND destroying the environment.

What are you trying to achieve? I know a lot about this stuff and I can give guidance.
