View Full Version : Laptop Shopping (For Christmas).

I wanted to buy my wife a laptop for Christmas. I just got an e-mail in my inbox with this computer supposedly on sale from TigerDirect.com. Can anyone scope it out and tell me if that computer is any good for the price?
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=6662539&sku=P101-170016&SRCCODE=WEM2425IM&cm_mmc=email-_-Main-_-WEM2425-_-tigeremail
If that's not good, can anyone suggest a good laptop? She mainly will use it to be a Facebook junkie, playing those stupid flash games and to search the internet for random things using Google. I may use it occasionally for Gemstone, but other than that we really wouldn't play games on it.
I was debating screen size. I really want the larger 17 inch+ screens, but is there a draw back to that? I'd like a good battery life too, although she would be plopped on the couch next to a plug at all times, so maybe that isn't very important.
Should I wait until Black Friday, or is this link a good deal? Can anyone computer savvy help me?

I'm an idiot. I forgot to add my price range.
I'm really only looking to spend between $500-$700, preferably in-between.
She gets mad when I spend too much on presents.
I also forgot to mention I get a discount through Dell at my hospital, but it's only 7%.

If she is just going to use it for shit like the internet and not a bunch of games and whatnot, then it should be fine. I have similar laptop, never had any problems with it.

Does that mean it would suck to play, for example, Starcraft II on? Not that I would, just curious.
She also likes to mess with photo stuff, so she would be uploading a million pictures from her camera onto it, if that matters.
What's the weight like on a 17 inch screen laptop? Is it heavy to carry?
Check out the ASUS line.

I have that system, purchased new in January of last year. It's completely awesome on every level. I was a die had Toshiba Satellite user, until I snatched up this ASUS.
It seems like all of the ones I'm finding are refurbished, so you may want to check and see if you can find an updated model number on the series.

Yeah, you wouldn't want to play Starcraft 2 on it.
For photos, it should be fine. I use mine for photos and iTunes/iPod related crap. Works good.
As far as weight, its on that page. Almost 8 pounds. Its a perfect fit for a backpack and stuff though, although new laptops suck down batteries at a crazy rate.

Wowie, sir, the reviews look good on that as well. How much did you pay for it? (REMEMBER WHEN I QUIT YOUR JOB FOR YOU?!?!?)

HAHAHAHAHAHA hilarious.
I think I paid $699, though that was 9 months ago.

You serious bro? I just got a new laptop and the battery life is way beyond my last model (HP 8440p vs. HP 6930p).

Might just be my memory, but I recall laptops lasting far beyond 4 hours.

8lbs is fucking heavy for a laptop. FUCKING HEAVY.

Bob, sir, I highly value your opinion as well! The one you put there (the HP 8440p) looks a bit expensive for me. What would you recommend in my price range, curiously? HP? Dell? The one Peam suggested?

But its not heavy for a heavy thing.

I've been using an HP for just over two years now but not really out of choice. It's still better than a lot of laptops. ASUS is my #1 pick for laptops, and the one peam linked is incredible for that price (granted, it's refurbished).
I would consider something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220753 for the better display (1600x900 instead of 1366x768), it's also LED backlit but I'm sure a lot of laptops are now.
You can't have a large screen and good battery life either. Just like you can't have a bright screen and good battery life, but this is mitigated by LED backlighting.

Picked this out for a coworker to get his wife last week.
Budget friendly and has HDMI out for streaming goodness on your bigscreen.

Can someone tell me if this computer is any good or not? I know nothing about memory, processor, etc. It's a 17 inch screen, which is what I want, and it is under $500...
I know everyone says to get an Asus, but I can't find one for under $600.

I dunno, but you really need to remove my e-mail from your address book or whatever. I'm tired of getting your virusy e-mails that i've asked you to stop with but you haven't yet fixed. :/

Okay, I think I'm going to get one of these two. I already had one really nice person send me a PM with helpful advice, but just in case he doesn't see my reply, I will post it here.
These two laptops look identical to me. One has a lot more reviews, however. Can someone distinguish which is better? They are the same price.

Are you sure?
The black one says:
Intel Pentium P6100 processor
2.0GHz, 3MB L3 Cache
The grey one says:
Intel Pentium dual-core P6000 processor
1.86GHz, 1066MHz Front Side Bus, 3MB L3 Cache
Aren't the numbers higher on the black one?
Pretty sure the P6100 is dual core too.
edit: and verified
Multi-Core Technology: Dual-Core Processor: Intel Pentium P6100 / 2 GHz Chipset Type: Mobile Intel HM55 Express

Why the fuck would a P6000 be a better processor than a P6100? Don't give recommendations when you're totally clueless.
