We WON FELICIA DAY'S RETWEET for 1025 her mention was too expensive, and we got outbid on the mega pkg (but we made the other guy pay more!) We're probably responsible from moving it from 1400 to 2100, so an extra $700 for haiti.

$1000 left, going after Levar.

... and we won Levar Burton @mention for 1015...

someone tried to snipe us at 1000! luckily I had bid for 1015! haha, he probably feels like a loser!

That means we just spent 2040, which is exactly what we collected (or will, after Nilandria sends in her pledge on Monday).

I call that efficiency

Won't be a shortfall unless Nilandia renegs, which I highly doubt. She is out of town until Monday but said she'll send in 25 then, which gives us exactly what is needed.

That'd be the best advertising around. Heh, we could all write emails to pester the shit out of Yahtzee Croshaw to review Gemstone for one week of Zero Punctuation. He'd have a lot to make fun of, but it would probably be great advertising just the same.

best course of action now would be debating what to talk about in the tweets. I think under Felicia's maybe talk about 2 distinct servers, one that is rich with roleplaying and family friendly, and another that is no holds barred and completely ruthless.

I don't know who that is but a negative review won't make any current player quit, so if it made just 1 new person join it'd be net positive.

Not a bad idea either. Maybe we should all subscribe to Levar and Felicia's twitter feeds so that we can comment positive things about Gemstone when the big retweet occurs.

So, apparently we get to explicitly specify what we want retweeted for the retweet from Felicia day.

We also get to explicitly write Levar Burton's tweet that will include our @mention.

So.. that is good. I've told Solomon, he just needs to write them, he has 4 days to do so. If you have suggestions I imagine posting them on the officials would be the best place.

We also get to specify the time of the tweet, so long as it happens in October.

I was having a chat with my girlfriend about this tonight, and she made an interesting suggestion.

I got her to try GS a year ago, and she just didn't go for it. She is a geek, likes games, loves reading, typing, words, all that...she wanted to like it, but couldn't get over how unfriendly the new player experience was. Even with me sitting over her shoulder and helping her in-game, the lack of information was staggering. It had been so long since I'd been a new player, I'd forgotten what it was like (and the game was also simpler back then).

Tonight she said that perhaps if new players were somehow directed to the existing player community (which is actually -quite- helpful...we may be obnoxious jerks to one another, but when someone new shows up on our doorstep, we're usually more than happy to try and help them get acclimated), it might help smooth out some of the unfortunate wrinkles in the new player experience.

To that end, I found myself wondering if it would be a good idea to send new players right to krakiipedia. The home page of KP does more to help someone new figure out the lay of the land than the GS homepage, I think. Or maybe I'm just in too deep to see clearly on this matter.

In any case, the spirit of her suggestion, which I wholeheartedly agree with, is this: GS is NOT a new-user-friendly game, and the best, most complete resource for alleviating this is us. So how do we make sure that new players get what they need from us to get sucked into our wonderful game before they throw up their hands in frustration and say "I'm outta here"?

Fallen

Well, there is the Sprite Quest. I definitely think the Mentors should be tapped a bit more than they are to help out new people. There should be a, "I'm new, HALP!" button on SF that basically alerts a mentor that a new player is calling out for aid. If there already is, then it needs to be displayed far more prominently.

All new characters get hit with a message every so often that says something like, "Suchandsuch mentor is available to help you. Click here to be teleported to him/her." That could happen more frequently, though.

Felicia Day: Hey guys! Recently I participated in a charity auction for Haiti called Twitchange, all the money went to the charity, and one of the "people" who won one of my tweets was a pool of players of a RPG/Mud called Gemstone IV: www.play.net/gs4

They want to SAVE THEIR GAME by getting advertisement to get new players. All on their own. I just thought it was so cool that these are FANS, not the owners who won, that I wanted to post something about them here too, in case any of you might be interested in checking their game out :)

GemStone IV is a MUD-style fantasy role-playing game set in a medieval world of magic where you can meet friends, find romance or take on ferocious foes with your fellows.

I don't know if it's because I've watched Cars 100,000,000 times in the last six months or not, but this entire scenario reminds me of the scene in the movie where all the townspeople are anticipating a flock of new people when the interstate was built. Hopefully people come, though, unlike in the movie.

I wanted to share some useful resources for any new or returning players that feel overwhelmed by the volume of information necessary to play GS these days.

The first and most useful is Krakiipedia (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page). It's a Gemstone IV wiki with thousands of player- and staff- written articles covering just about every mechanic in the game. It's very useful and kept up-to-date by a number of dedicated editors. Just about any question can be answered here, if you know what to search for.

The second resource is the unofficial GS forums, known as the Player's Corner or the PC (http://forum.gsplayers.com/index.php). The PC is largely uncensored and unmoderated so there can be some harsh language and inflammatory topics, but ultimately, it is the more used of the two GS forums. Many people buy and sell GS items on the PC exclusively and it has a large search-able database. Also, anyone can make an account so if you're on a trial account and you have questions that don't get answered in game, go ahead and ask on the PC.

Lastly, I want to mention Lich (http://lichproject.org/). Lich is a third-party, open source scripting engine that more and more players are taking advantage of every day. It has a global Out Of Context (OOC) chat channel (another useful place to ask questions) and literally hundreds of labor-saving scripts to download, with more being uploaded all the time. One of the most useful perks for new players is the map, which creates a pop-up window that shows your location and nearby landmarks, hunting areas and stores as you move through the game.

Hope these help ease the confusion. While these are all very useful resources, I'd highly recommend asking folks for advice in-game as we have an extremely helpful player base who would be willing to assist in an in-context manner. If you see Droit around Elanthia, feel free to say hi!

yeah if you're an old player, find a clever way of announcing it in the game and i'm sure tons of people will be more than happy to assist you. the change between Gemstone III and Gemstone IV was pretty much just an improvement to the comba...t system.

speaking of that, here's a thread documenting my participation in a clan war that took place in Gemstone Shattered, an unlimited PvP server that is completely uncensored and unmoderated. it truly was a war and i'm happy to say we won! over 50 player kills by yours truly are documented! enjoy..

30 days of free play, enter billing and c/c info at the end of the trial if you want to keep playing.

I have noticed that some people will say things are "impossible" but other people will be like oh man I can do that easy.

I'm one of those people that take other peoples impossible things and accomplish them easily.

Simutronics needs someone there that can do the impossible, b/c the current staff is trapped behind impossible.

Deactivated account holders, beware the reactivation link on the GS4 front page that leads here:

http://www.play.net/playdotnet/account/reactivate/

I clicked on it to see if there were any specials or anything going on after this whole Twitter thing and got a message telling me my account was already active and therefore did not require reactivation. Odd. Checked my billing history and I have been charged today as though I completed and confirmed the reactivation process.

I wrote an email to Billing - here's hoping they get it figured out and don't accidentally force any further reactivations.

Or maybe an average increase in total players when you type "WHO FULL"?

A while ago I had a program that kept track of the number of people playing GS ticker that used to be on the Simu web page, and I generated graphs (http://www.deadlylight.com/images/WhoFull.png) of that data, shortly after I published these graphs on this site Simu took down the ability to see how many people were playing from outside the game. I do not have an account anymore so I can't keep track.

If someone were to write a lich script that would check the status (not full, no need to track the names of the people playing) every so often and call a web service with the info, this type of metric could be realized again, as long as enough people opted to run it to cover a 24/7 window.

I don't have a ton of free time, but if there's interest in having that data I could help out where I can.

(Although realistically I just foresee someone like those who run the playershop like services just taking over and doing it top/bottom)

I hate twitter as well, but the "@" is basically a reply, or directing the tweet at (appropriately enough) another user.

like "@drisco you suck!", would be me telling you that you...in fact, suck.

# tags are flagging a tweet for a particular topic. like

"@gemstoneIV this game rocks! #muds #games" would be me telling gemstoneIV it rocks, and this tweet is part of the "muds" and "games" topics.

I fucking hate twitter.

I remember back when I last played I used to type who full or whatever the command was during peak hours and I would get 350-400 sometimes during Holidays and such it would go to 450-almost 500. I don't remember if I ever saw it get past 500 or not. And that was about a year ago.

If people are typing who full in the game and they are getting similar numbers, in the 450-500 range, on non holidays or non summer months, on a steady basis, than I would say the population has improved. If they are pulling up numbers like 250-350 which was the average I would say back then, than not much has changed at all. As much as I'm sure most people in the game would wish it has.

But seriously, if you're pulling up numbers even in the 600 at any time of the day than definitely there has been an improvement. If not, than at least your money went to a good cause, and no one can fault any of you for trying your best.

I would just like to add that the price of the game would most certainly turn most people off who have never played it before and who find out it doesn't have graphics. There's just no getting around that. We aren't living in the late 80's to early 90's.

If the game lowered it's monthly price to even 10 dollars and kept it there for the sake of saving the game, than I believe Felecia would have had a much stronger effect. But speaking for myself, if I had never heard of a mud before, and someone told me that it was words scrolling down a screen, my first thought would be slight disappointment that it didn't have graphics. Especially if I was of the generation that grew up playing xbox, ps2, etc. But knowing myself I would still say I'd give it a try just to see what all the fuss was about. But then if someone told me it was $15 a month to play it, I would change my mind completely, and go turn on the tv and the console for some free gaming.

Like I said, speaking for myself, the price would turn me off and prevent me from playing it period, IF I didn't already play it back when it was free on AOL and fall in love with it back then. If I had been on AOL and I saw the game on it for $15 a month, I can guarantee you now that I would have never even tried it, and chosen to play doom over the phone line with a friend instead.

If Simutronics wants to keep up with the pace of society, than they have to get realistic about how society now views gaming. And adjust their prices accordingly.

SuckerFish
10-12-2010, 07:11 AM
The bad news for you guys is that I don't believe Simutronics gives a rats ass (as most companies don't either) whether or not the population improves. And I don't think they ever will. Their first priority is and always has been keeping a steady stream of surplus of profits going. And for them to put time and money into advertising their game to the World at a time when games are becoming more and more technologically advanced means that they would be putting that surplus of profits at risk, and virtually no company in the World would ever do that.

So....what this means for you guys is this....Either Simu's profits will stay the same (which is what they want), and should also be what you guys should want, because if the population dwindles even further, and the profit margin falls along with it, there is no doubt in my mind that they will most likely opt for shutting down the game all-together. Perhaps first will come the laying off of employees, what little they have left that they pay.

They would surprise me if they ever lowered their monthly price. They would surprise me even more if they ever put the time and money into making the game free/pay to play at the same time such as games like DDO, etc.

Nahh, I think they would just cut their losses completely. What about you?

SuckerFish

I'd like to finish by saying this.

Gemstone Shattered was never created for the players. Anyone who thinks they came out with Gemstone Shattered because they wanted to provide their current playing base with more variety and entertainment is only kidding themselves.

The only reason that Gemstone Shattered was created is because the company wanted to devise a plan to suck even more profits from it's current player base only. They knew that it would only divide the population even further, which proves the point about them not giving a damn about it in the first place, but they also knew that the current population would sign up for the new accounts on Shattered as well as keep their old ones (due to the time and money they had already put into them).

The rumors about Monks were always designed to keep you guys on the hook, and as long as you remain on the hook, the surplus of profits remains. But once they begin to break even or even lose money on the investment, I assure you the people who run the company will come up with either more ways to bleed you guys dry, or.....they will send you all an email thanking you for your participation for all these years and for your support, just before yanking the cord out of the socket.

I think this guy has a point. I'm going to start playing MTG online.

Whether you are joking or not really doesn't matter to me. MTG has an amazing system for trading (perfectly safe/easy and nobody gets screwed if you know what you're doing), and the store/purchase system is quick and easy. Last night I bought two booster packs at 3.99 each, tax free of course, and, it was just click, purchase, cards.

Also they offer a variety of ways to pay for it, including pay pal.

It's a game that doesn't make promises and come up short. You know what you're getting, you don't get let down, there are constant people online to help with any problem you have.

Not to mention that every month you get free stuff just for owning the game, including free promotional cards every month as long as your account is in good standing. It's called their rewards program. And unlike other rewards programs, you don't need to pay a single penny to qualify. You just have to have no infractions on your account. New players can sign up for it instantly by going to your settings options and clicking on the join the rewards program.

The game is awesome. You can build your own decks even when you're not logged in. I would say, overall, the experience is better than the one I had with Gemstone 4.

Come to think of it that's gotta be it. Because I would take issue if there was a ever a glitch in the system and the cards disappeared or something because I would have payed taxes then on something that basically was created out of thin air and then went back into the thin air that it came from.

Yeah I mean I understand paying for the usage of the cards. That's a no brainer. But being taxed to use them on top of it? When everybody knows that you can't keep them in your possession? In fact, technically, they are never in YOUR possession, it's almost like you're buying something that's being lent to you. Purchasing something that you don't actually own. Which is why they can't stop people from selling them. Because there are just too many loop holes with all of that. How can someone actually claim ownership over something that doesn't exist? Only the software that is used to produce them. That's really the only thing the company actually owns. Not the individual results that come from it.

In fact some could argue that even some of the software that was used to produce the cards was not owned by the company. Some of the software could very well have come from different companies who let them use it for their designing process. The rabbit hole only gets deeper as you look into it.

Which is why I usually just stick to playing the game. =) Only games that I respect that is. And companies that cater to their customers and not the other way around. We could argue about this all day, but I see the catering going the other way in the case of Gemstone 4. Even to the point where they have you guys advertising for them, because they won't do it for themselves. In fact it's disgusting at the moment how they are literally like the "dogs dozing in a food trough for cattle. They neither eat nor do they let the cattle eat." And that line comes from the King of kings Himself.

Does someone here subscribe to LevarBurton so we know if he has tweeted or not? I'd like to be sure before I complain again. WTF is up with these guys? Seriously, $1000 doesn't buy much does it?

In unrelated news I got signed photos of Felicia Day today. I am of course keeping the nude ones and lingerie shots, but there is also a headshot and a guild cast photo. Does someone out there (who donated) want them?

Put them up for auction and donate the proceeds to charity.

No. Last time he mentioned anything relating to TwitChange was Oct 2nd when his follow auction was fulfilled.

I've been reading his tweets on my phone every morning since the inception of this thread. I think Levar needs a little persuading by captain crb, because he hasn't retweeted shit, maybe he screwed up and just followed the GS feed?

Good Afternoon! I hope that you are doing well.

This email is being sent to every winner of every TwitChange auction so that we can make sure your auction has been properly fulfilled. If it hasn't (and I am aware of the 15% or so that have not), I want to communicate to you that we have worked incredibly hard to provide a solution for you and we now have several options.

Instead of having you complete yet another form, I want to work with you directly to make sure all is well.

Were your auctions fulfilled?

What is outstanding?

If they were not fulfilled, would you like a refund? These can be easily and quickly processed by us and the team @ Kompolt.

If they were not fulfilled, would you be willing to have other willing celebrities fulfill your auctions? This will allow the charity to succeed and may allow you to still have a great solution.

I am working very hard with our great charity in Haiti and hope to work things out for you or your team as quickly as I can.

Keep it real and let's move forward.

Thanks my friend,

Shaun

When he's not coming up with schemes to make bank; he spends his free time playing grand theft auto and smoking weed.

Are they giving a list of celebs to pick from as his replacement, or just random assignment and you hope you get someone that relates to your wishes?

Kitsun

Ask for someone awesome as a replacement!

I think we could ask for someone else, but it would have to be someone who originally participated in the twitchange auction. (ie, a celeb they already have a relationship with.)

I would say that we request someone else. Perhaps a link to all the people who participated in the charity event.
