Hey all, I want to buy a new TV. My current TV is something from 1990, so I am deciding to join the 21st century! yay! Anyway, I was at best buy, and saw a lot of great deals. Looking for something around 40 inches, won't do any serious gaming on it, just looking to have something nice finally. Any advice? Should I get the extended warranty, etc? Thanks guys.

I have a 40" LED Samsung UN40C6300 and I can't recommend it enough. Mine is networked (I ran a line to it but you can get a wireless adapter for ~$60) so I can stream from my computer, and it has USB ports to read a flash/hard drive. I love it. You should love it too.

Ditto, I have the same TV. It rocks.

Never never never buy an extended warranty from stores, I say. I recently bought a tv from Best Buy too, though. But only 32". Still a great deal!

I agree with this. I don't have the same exact model, but Samsung is quality.

Always, always, always buy an extended warranty on your new TV's.

Uh oh. I think you're just going to have to replace the whole darn thing.
Might I suggest this?

If you decide to go larger than the 40" I'd suggest considering a Panasonic. I love my Panasonic 50" plasma. It's networked and if I choose I can download movies direct from netflix, etc. It's a G15 and has awesome blacks and is THX certified.
That said, I would seriously consider an LED/LCD these days, primarily because your LEDs will pretty much last forever, whereas everything else has a bulb that can go out and is expensive to replace. Also I think the LED sets probably consume a lot less electricity. I would temper that by going to CNET for reviews, and look particularly at variability of darkness levels with the LEDs and find a set that handles that issue very well.
No matter what you choose, it's pretty clear that when it comes to flat screen, there are huge quality differences. Don't go buy the cheapest set you can find, because it's probably cheap for a reason.

so what is it? get extended warranty or not? It was useful with my computer, but i can't imagine a TV will have that many problems considering i'm using one that's 20 years old.

I would suggest buying the extended warranty. With such an expensive purchase like that, what's another $50-100 or so to ensure it's protected after the manufacturer warranty runs out? Just think of it like insurance - chances are nothing bad will happen, but if it does, you'll be covered.

That would be a good argument if the extended warranty was $50 or $100, but it's more like no less than $200. I wouldn't do it; I can't imagine a manufacturing problem that will present itself between 2-4 years after purchase but not within the first year, and retail stores (especially Best Buy) want nothing more than to fuck you out of your money.

It wasn't an argument - it was a suggestion based on my opinion, and that's what he was asking for. That model you suggested has a 2 year protection agreement for $150 at Best Buy ($200 for 4 years), and I think it'd be worth it. I also have had completely different experiences with Best Buy than you, obviously.

I'm not sure you know what the definition of argument is?
The only thing worth having an extended warranty on a TV for these days is the off chance your motherboard goes out.
The motherboard went out on my panasonic LCD and my warranty covered it. My warranty was less than the replacement part and labor.

They've had to come to my house twice to fix my LCD. Each time would have cost twice the price I paid for my extended warranty.

I dont like spending money on insurance or extended coverages for cell phones, TVs, and computers. If something is wrong with them, it usually shows up during the manufacturers warranty period. By the time something goes wrong after the initial warranty, it's time to get a new one because your current model is feels ancient.

The other fairly common problem with flat screens is bulb failure. That's one of the big advantages of the LED/LCDs.

Samsung's a good choice. Don't do extended warranties. Fucking notorious ripoff. Insurance for every possible unlikely problem on mass manufactured new tv = hosing of first order.
