I remember in 9th grade we had to do a research project of some kind for biology, and amidst MY researching I found on the internet (whatever the searching terms were) some goofy ass photoshop of like octopus and starfish with big googledy eyes, and some made up names for them like the SHOOP octopus (not really, but something similarly silly).
A girl in my class actually used this as fact, and her whole presentation was on the googledy eyed sea creatures someone had made as a funny website.
What was even more sad, is that she got a B.
I will never forget that.

Also, yes, there are Hydrogen bombs and the fusing of deuterium (hydrogen + neutron) - or better yet tritium - into heilium adds greatly to the power of the bomb, but you still require quite a large fission bomb to start that process.
Basically surround your large uranium atomic bomb with liquid or super-compressed deuterium and/or tritium and you get a very very large boom indeed.

I tend to look at it more as the government providing capital for people to get an education and those people waste it. No one asked you to go out and borrow $100,000 for that astronomy degree at Dartmouth only for you to turn around and work in retail, bro. However, it would be a damn shame if student loans were difficult to obtain.
And really, if you take out a $20,000 student loan that takes you 12 years to pay off, you're completely incompetent.
Just checked, and Stafford loans since 1992 have not been issued above 8.25%.
Kaittee
04-12-2011, 05:54 AM
Actually, I think that student loan debt is a huge problem. Students at 18 years old have no concept of how much $20,000, $40,000, or more, in student loans really is. A lot of students now are the first in their families to attend college, so their parents encourage them to get a degree despite the cost.
Personally, my student loans are manageable, but I have two friends (both with advanced degrees and excellent jobs) who are paying over $1000/month because at 18 years old it seemed like a good idea. Students need to be more educated about the debt they are taking on at a college that is $40k/year.
Bobmuhthol
04-12-2011, 09:40 AM
Again, there's a responsibility to know what you're doing -- if you go to a $40k/yr school, shouldn't you also not be completely incompetent at deciding what level of debt you can handle? And isn't it also the case that someone with an excellent job obtained from a degree would not have that excellent job without that degree, and thus, $1000/mo is nothing compared to the additional lifetime earnings?
AnticorRifling
04-12-2011, 09:44 AM
Bob lives in a very sterile environment where the contamination of real life doesn't creep into equations.
But I kind of agree with him, no one forces you to accept stupid loans and ignorance isn't a free pass to be absolved of assumed responsibility.
Kaittee

Again, there's a responsibility to know what you're doing -- if you go to a $40k/yr school, shouldn't you also not be completely incompetent at deciding what level of debt you can handle?
Listen, I agree that these people choose to take on this debt. My point is that when they have to make that decision they are 17 or 18 years old. Most kids at that age can barely cook themselves dinner or do the laundry. You really think they are capable of making rationale decisions about finances?? Couple that with enthusiatic parents and high school guidance counselors who want to be able to say "X% of our students attend Harvard!", there is a lot of pressure on these young kids to go to the "best" school they can get into, and with that comes a huge pricetag.
Both the high schools and the college admissions do a terrible job educating students about what they are getting into. They think, "I'll owe $60k when I graduate, but I'll be making that in a year, so I should be able to pay that off in 2 or 3 years." They have no idea about all the other bills and expenses they will have when they are living on their own, because they are still living with their parents when they make that decision.
And isn't it also the case that someone with an excellent job obtained from a degree would not have that excellent job without that degree, and thus, $1000/mo is nothing compared to the additional lifetime earnings?
As for that, it depends. One of my friends with the over $1000/month payment owes about $130k total between undergrad and law school. She makes $55k now as an attorney. That's not terrible, but I think that salary sucks for the amount of student loans she has.
Obviously, these students signed up for what they got, but shouldn't adults who actually understand finances (high school guidance counselers, college fiancial aid reps) try to educate them about their decisions before they get in way over their heads?

Bobmuhthol
04-12-2011, 10:43 AM
I'm probably closer. I'm in Waltham for school.
In any event, I was 17, I made these decisions, etc., and I'll have something like $22k in undergrad loans -- the maximum amount for subsidized Stafford loans. My college gives me grant money on top of a 50% tuition scholarship. The price of my degree will easily exceed $200k between tuition, housing, and fees, but my out of pocket expense is entirely within reason because I made good choices. Maybe understanding finance is an uncommon characteristic among high school seniors, but it shouldn't be, and I'm a lot more prone to place the blame on the people who don't take the time to educate themselves. My high school was totally useless and it didn't slow me down.

That one and the one about sitting down killing you are made by the same company which isn't very unscientific... For example, the sitting down study is a single study of questionable accuracy. It'd be like if they made one on Vaccines causing autism right after that criminally and intentionally inaccurate study came out (the counter study could have said, "Jenny McCarthy believes this, it must be false").

I stayed at a hotel once where every time we came back to the room the housekeeping staff had done this to our toilet paper. I don't mean once a day, we could come back to the room 4-5 times in a single day and it was done every time. I started to think they had a video camera stationed so they could see people leaving their rooms so they could send their squads of housekeepers in to fold the toilet paper.

Survival of the fittest sucks for foods that are gross.
Many of those varieties that national laboratories have lost are still being grown by avid gardeners with their own "seed banks". That's why the tomatoes and melons from the farmers market will always be better.
Survival of the fittest makes our food taste like cardboard. Thank commercial agriculture for that also. Shelf life = profits. Flavor has nothing to do with profits on a commercial scale, because if they flood the market, you only have one choice. Shitty tasting or not

Shelf life = profits.
Bingo. Industrial farming in a simple equation.
Conformity of products all lookly roughly the same, shelf life, and durability during transporation is what industrial farming is all about. This of course breeds out important characteristics the conscious eater would like to have such as better flavor, higher nurtrient content, and diversity.

It's going to create jobs! (ps please don't mention coal miners losing their jobs by supporting our views) CREATE JOBS! lol
There's far more problems with it than that...
It's very bias, it's created by 1BOG a solar company who would directly benefit from solar subsidies.
It shows 'pre-stimulus data', last year the solar industry received $1 billion and is still 1% of our energy supply...
Also, one could question their use of 'subsidies' for the oil & coal industries. oil & coal get tax breaks, where solar gets actual subsidies... but if it meant 'preferential treatment' by the government, it should have stated it more clearly.
Here's a report (http://www.eia.gov/oiaf/servicerpt/subsidy2/pdf/subsidy08.pdf) with more information, unfortunately not in the form of a handy-dandy bias infographic.
It's not a simple issue - most of the non-funny infographics are wildly bias and at least mostly disingenuous. The PITA one for example is true on many regards, but what they don't say is that PETA generally only takes in animals that are not adoptable for neglect, temper or abuse reasons. The main problem is that they haven't defined the specific rules of what that means.

I wasn't calling it a Hulihee when I was rocking it (and I referenced the doc for that post), but there were three of us with them for a small little beer themed party. I don't really rock a solid beard, especially out of winter (I'll go full Thor beard for winter though), I do the whole 5 o'clock shadow thing usually. The cola info-graphic only addresses what happens within the hour. The acid levels in cola, and especially diet cola can lower the stomach's acid secretion process making it more difficult to digest other foods. Calcium phosphate in your buffering system is drawn to neutralize the cola, which can affect your teeth and bones. An overly acidic diet affects asthma, allergies, congestion, ulcers, skin conditions, weight gain, etc. Diet colas are even worse. It's the most acidic stuff we put in our body short of vinegar.

This is a good one. You'll likely know 90% of this stuff, but a few might be unfamiliar.
