I belong to this awesome volunteer program, where you read books and correspond back and forth with them. I got real letters from the children that I think are just the neatest thing in the world. Just wanted to share.

oh, my personal favorite letter I included above, simply because she wrote

"helps I like to cat"

I thought that was cool, lol.

I loved having pen pals when I was little. The second letter was pretty good, but Danielle's letter scares me a little.

Still pretty cute. How old are they?

Im impressed SHM. Very. I didn't even know you had that type of patience.
Volunteering is one of the best things a person can do.

Heh, damn you for posting it before me, Tayvin.

I still want to know wtf she's talking about.

Edited because pedophile joke was ruined by posting of age previously.

I volunteered at a Salvation Army Day Care/Shelter last weekend for this organization I'm in called Voices. It was fun and the kids were great. One little girl had a crush on me, so naturally we argued.

Her - "You're stupid boy!"
Me - "Well you're stupid girl!"
Her - "You're ugly!" *hit me in leg*
Me - "You're ugly!"
Etc.

She was like 4. It was cute.

Also, back in the day, we did that penpal thing in school. I'm glad someone like Bill is on the other end of those letters.

4 year olds are quite interesting and brutally honest.

WHAT THE.

I'm not ugly. /cry

Five minutes later she was hanging all over my legs and trying to get me to carry her but the people there were all "Don't pick up teh kids plz. Insurance reasons blah blah blah." So none of us were allowed to pick them up.

SHE TOTALLY <3 ME AND U SUCK. :(

Tayre = :heart:

The 4 year old you were interacting with had a mild case of jealousy.. yep, thats what it was.

4 year olds are more mean then honest anyway... I was reflecting back on my dealings with one the other day. one minute he wants me to swing him around laughing and having a grand time, the next he's mad at me because his mother is making him eat his dinner. There's no pleasing them.

Kids, in all honesty, scare me.

All the volunteering programs we had in college, the most popular placements were with kids. I volunteered to do street outreach with homeless alcoholics.

Better'n kids, I used to think. Kids have an unnatural affinity for trying to kill me.

I love the way kids express themselves. Even if it needs some deciphering it takes a bit of time.

One more letter, I just finished up the school year, and one line in this cracked me up...figured I'd share.

"How good to eat you, oops I mean meet you."

Yeah, I'm easily amused. I get one more letter from each of the three students, but my work is done :) If anyone is interested, go to

http://www.in2books.org/

I spoke with the coordinator there and she said they do international pen pals, local pen pals and long distance pen pals, so anyone could do it. It's very enjoyable and doesn't take a lot of time to make a difference.

And here I thought the only people who had penpals were chicks and inmates.
