So, tomorrow I interview at Government Scientific Source for a job. I'm not sure what the title is, but the job is akin to a pharm rep -- except without all the rediculous travel. They supply laboratory equipment under government contract to pretty much every government facility with a lab in it. My job will be to be a customer contact.
I talked to the guy on the phone, and I have a really good feeling about it. He said I'm 90% qualified, and that he was very impressed with how well we got on, and with my phone skills (there's a lot of telephone talking involved in the job). He asked me if I would be willing to start as early as Friday. I go in tomorrow to initial interview, and then Thursday to finish up the final paperwork.
So I'm pretty sure I just landed myself a 30k a year job (not bad, considering I've never gotten salary before, and I make 7.35 an hour right now).
I'm uber-excited and very confident, after talking to this guy. I can hardly wait for tomorrow to roll around. He said the company has virtually no turnover, very good benefits, and excellent opportunity for promotion within. Adding to that, they also pay for me to go to school if the classes I take apply to my job (and since I'm probably going to go into business management or something, I'm sure it's covered.)
I'm hoping it isn't just him trying to interview and ditch me, but I really don't get that feeling. What do you think?

I think you should go in there with the confidence you are exhibiting right now. Confidence is key, as well as a great attitude and a great amount of professionalism. You should have no problems!
Good luck.. wish you the best tomorrow. :)

Yeah, if anything it sounded like he was trying to sell HER on the job. That has to be a good sign since it's usually the applicant selling themselves as the right person for the job. Sounds like it is in the bag. Knock em dead. (I was going to add: 'and dance on their bodies' but that seemed inappropriate)

^^ What mint said. And since they seem to want you so bad, you might want to think about the kind of salary you want so you can negotiate a little. If they won't budge on the salary, you could always asking for more vacation, parking space(not sure if that's an issue), etc.

I discussed salary with him, it's 28k to 35k based on experience. As I really have no experience in this field, I'm happily settling for 28k unless t hey offer me more. It's 3 months of training with a supervisor in the office, after that time I"m eligible to be promoted.

I can assure you that going to college certainly helps in the starting salary, as well in the fact that those without a college degree often have to go through 2 promotions or more to get the same point. Have a masters or MBA, add another spot.
That being said, congratulations on getting the job :), work your ass off, and it pays off the in the end. As for Bob, until you actually get a job, making derogatory statements about other people's job offers is just well, totally full of Bobmuhthol.
You haven't even gotten into college yet, let alone a decent enough one from which you can market yourself to make that kind of money fresh out.

Depends on what you're majoring in.
Engineers have a starting salary of 50k U.S. which is pretty good when you're just entering the work force.
I don't know about how it works in the States, but in Canada pretty much every university has an internship program so that you get credit for real work experience and it pays more than enough for your education. So you're basically repaying your government loan as you gain your degree.
And finally, the top universities in Canada will actually PAY students who are pursuing a PhD. So you're actually getting paid to get a degree.
<---------- 48k earned driving a bus last year. I win.

We actually make a similar hourly and I refuse to go salary.
I just get paid double time on Sundays and average about 10-12 hours of OT on top of that.
Also I am on the clock from the moment I step off my front step to the moment I return anytime I have to make a trip to a customer's.
Add in the straight time I get paid off shift anytime I log into the company server to work or log into the phone network to conference.
It adds up.

Just wait til July when I get promoted and start earning commission. It isn't commission for just me or my team's sales, either, it's a percentage of the entire company's sales -- and usually adds up to about 5 grand a month per person. Then, there's profit sharing at the beginning of the year... oh, and government holidays off/paid, and no weekends, no evenings, paid benefits...

As for a business suit, I don't own one. Maybe some day soon I'll invest in some decent clothes. Luckily, the office is very casual. As the marketing manager put it, "We walk softly, but we carry a very big stick" (referring to the casual demeanor vs the business' pull in their market).

Carmax's cheapest cars are still about 5k, so I recommend going to autotrader.com. I was just checking it out (local area, I think you're in Northern VA). A few decent looking cars there (just watch out for the ones that say "need work"). One that caught my eye:
$800 Taurus with only 100k miles, looks decent but the guy suggests getting new brakes. (Local Midas running $90 lifetime brakes installed, rotors might be extra if they're bad)

About two years ago, I probably would've called "Bullshit!"
But.. yep.
I never feel like I am actually working so I still think I win. Hey, where's the little smilie with the tongue sticking out? Oh well, consider that inserted...HERE.

So far, everyone except Tayre is (officially) making hella more than me, although I'm sure a degree in physics will open all kinds of career paths. :D

If I didn't have the opportunity to go to school I'd be in the middle of a plumber's apprenticeship.. As it is now I just do part time as a plumber's helper, but my uncle who I work for has his own business and is gradually putting more trucks on the road.
Getting into a union if you're like an 18 year old guy and able bodied is definitely the way to go if you don't go to get a degree for whatever reason.
As Tsa`ah said, working the double time and over time if you have the opportunity is golden.

Heh. Not rich by any means, Latrinsorm. A lot of my money goes back into my own business at the moment. Nevertheless, I love what I do. That is the real source of what I consider my "wealth". :)

And finally, the top universities in Canada will actually PAY students who are pursuing a PhD. So you're actually getting paid to get a degree
More information about this program and any similar ones in the states or abroad plz.

In Canada the top Universities such as the universities of Toronto, British Columbia, Queens, and McGill, when you get your PhD with them, you are considered an asset to the university.
They take PhD's VERY seriously since you're doing research in their name. The reputation and history of these universities is based on the work done by PhD students so the universities use their grad students to compete against one another. So in order to keep grad students around, not only is tuition free, but depending on the field of research they'll offer a salary, free residence and meals and other bonuses to keep you with them.
It's a sweet deal, but of course the pressure is on you to produce results.
The only other real nice deal with respect to university available in Canada is the Royal Military College of Canada.
You get your degree with them for free, free residence, free meals, but then you have to serve with the armed forces for 3 years. You still get paid and everything while serving and it's a very reputable university.
Sounds like west point for the military school.
Whats the chances of transferring to one of those schools from an American one, and do they do the same thing in social sciences?
