I know, it may be a fad, but I fucking want it. Besides, its also a HD, something which, other then my computer monitor, I've never had. My current TV is a 12 year old Sony, which still works great and all, but I want to have something nice. I was looking at picking this one up...

Any suggestions, tips, etc?

Any suggestions, tips, etc?

Drive 70mph down the highway, open window, stick money out of the window and let go.

Or send me a check. Either works.

I fail to see how either of those things make me happy with material possesions. I'm not just buying it for the 3D feature. Well, I am. I want a 3D TV. If it catches, sweet. If not, I still have a HD TV.

Rifle is better than 3D TV for sure. When you are dead and gone someone in your family will be able to cherish a quality firearm.

With the TV, in five years from now some 8 armed Chinese kid will be drinking water with BPA runoff from your formerly precious TV melting over a coffee can fire.

For now, you can watch the later online while cleaning your newly purchased gun.

I heard that 3D T.V.s can ruin your vision if exposed a lot. Might be worth considering if you have kids and stuff.

I expose myself to kids all the time and it hasn't ruined my vision.

...I may have read this wrong.

But it's ruined there, thats why your kids will end up pelvis deep in their grandma's gash.

Toshiba will release a 3D TV that utilizes glasses-free, autostereoscopy technology. One newspaper says the 3D sets will hit as soon as the end of the year.

I wouldn't be spending thousands of dollars on a 3DTV that requires glasses when the glasses-free variety coming in the not-too-distant future. Glasses are an inelegant requirement. Makes the color dimmer, washed out, reduces immersion.. and you have a finite amount of them. No thanks.

Might wait for one of those and just get a cheap ass little HD for the mean time. (Which I'll likely have as my only TV for about 10 years)

I would really recommend not getting a 3DTV purely because the cost is too high now, especially compared to the lack of available content. However, you can get some really incredible LED TVs for a third of the price.

I actually had three goals for the TV I was going to get...

40" or more, just because.
Plasma, Heard it had the best blacks
3D was another, because for some reason I'm mystified by it. I don't know why I want it, I just know that I must have it.

Have fun. I wouldn't buy a plasma.

Whats the major issues with plasma? I've always heard they were superior to LED, if not more expensive and a slight noise.

Depends on who you ask. Some folks love LED, some love plasma. Both groups will fight tooth and nail about it. Me I say get the one that has the most kick ass remote.

I'd say LCD over plasma. Plasmas are typically more expensive at the high-res and large-size end of the spectrum, and LCD's color reproduction/black levels have improved tremendously in recent times.

If you're just looking for a holdover until OLEDs/glasses-free 3DTVs come out, I'd get something cheap. I'm not specifically recommending this TV, but NewEgg sent out an e-mail about this one earlier.. $499.99 for an LG 42 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889005137&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL091010&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL091010-_-EMC-091010-Index-_-LCDTV-_-89005137-L0A)". That's not LED-backlit, though. You can get some great deals if you shop around--and fantastic deals if you wait till Black Friday.

I have both plasma and LCD. Plasma WAY better for movies and T.V., just much more colorful and yes the deeper blacks make a difference. LCD WAY better for gaming.

I'm waiting for 3d holographic images and then I'm gonna get a full body emulating suit and never leave the house and die of porn overdose.

Plasmas are less expensive if you live in 2010 and not 2004.

Wait a minute, how did it go from LED vs Plasma to LCD vs Plasma?

I thought they were very different. By the way, why the fuck didn't they release SED's... I want a flat CRT damnit.

LED and LCD TVs are not very different; LED TVs are simply LED-backlit LCDs (but it makes a huge difference in picture quality omg). OLED TVs, which are effectively unavailable in the consumer market, are considerably different from LCD. They're the really thin screens you can bend and shit.

Eh. At best in its current form I'd say "LED TV's" are exactly how you explained it; combining two very different technologies. LED's to my knowledge simply emit light, or don't, while LCD's substrate twists depending upon how much electrical current is applied to it. Which is how it regulates light throughput, etcetera.

"Really thin screens you can bend and shit" doesn't really tell me much from a technical standpoint. :p

I could be wrong though.. I haven't slept in 24 hours and I'm starting to see shit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED_TV

LCD TVs are LCD displays with a lightbulb for a backlight; LED TVs are just LCD displays with LEDs for a backlight. It allows the TV to better control area-specific lighting (think contrast ratio -- my TV is 4,000,000:1) and requires a lot less space (depth).

I think I already said that. Which is why I will protest these absurd naming conventions!

This is why I love Samsung, and why my next consumer phone will likely be the latest Samsung Galaxy.

These guys know wtf they're doing.

LCD = Liquid Crystal Display. LED = Light Emitting Diode.
I have solved this thread for you.

Every time I read the title of this thread I regret not being able to be the first to reply, "I recommend using both hands."

Regrets, I have them.
