Is not doubling in ambush really going to be the end of the world? What's really more important?
Please help, thanks.

You'll lose AS and the ability to snipe consistently for a while.

Hrm... why are you getting CM?
At early levels ambush is going to help you aim your shots quite a bit. As you progress (30's, 40's) you can let it slide further towards 1x. But personally, I consider hitting the eye to be more important than pretty much anything else, so when I sniped from hiding I kept my ambush as close to 2x as I could.
CM is near useless for a ranged user until much later in the game. I would drop it all until cap, personally.
You do not strictly *need* to 1x Dodge, it's nice to do so, but .75x is okay, some people go less--it's expensive, and a sniping path with 2x Stalk/Hide and as much ambush as possible doesn't leave a lot of TPs free. Stop training Climb/Swim for a while until you hit a hunting area that requires you to have more (although from your past posts I'm guessing you might be in RR, and thus you will need 14 climb to get up the path at some point, and around 6-10 ranks of swim).
If you're in Sunfist I recommend getting as close to 2x in PF as you can.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about climbing or swimming until your 30 days are up or until you start hunting in an environment that needs it. Same for CM's. My ranger basically was open aimer and had tons of points to put into spells. Or you can just keep the TP's in reserve and use them when necessary. Sniping is a waste of time for a ranger in my opinion.

So basically take from dodge and climb/swim before ambush?

And for the 2x in PF for Sunfist...your stamina does have a cap right? So when I hit it I can drop down to 1x right?

Take from CM (everything from CM) first, then take from climb/swim/dodge.

No, memory is a bit fuzzy, but as an open ranger you focus on perception for AS, ranged weapons, dodging, physical fitness (factors the most for most critter based manuevars contrary to popular belief), I'd 1x hiding and .5x fist aid and .5x survival for making mad lootz. Armor use up to whatever armor hinderance you're comfortable with. Then I either dumped the rest in spells or saved them on reserve for any 'tweaks' I needed to do so I didnt have to wait on migration. You definitely want dodging. With all his spells, especially mobiles, and dodging my ranger had one of the best DS's I can remember.
I am not spell checking this so deal with it.

This is pretty right on for open aiming except the 1x hide. Kind of a useless way to spend the points unless you want to be able to suck at hiding for RP reasons.

1x hiding with Camouflage works in a pinch.

Eh, I've had no hiding for awhile now and I don't find myself wanting for any ever. I think 1x'ing with camo gets you 1 shot or 1 critter attempt at sniffing you on 80% of anything you hunt, so the same as having no hiding and using camo.

Well depending upon which instance you're playing critters sniffing you isn't your only concern.

My idea was to have the option to snipe or to open aim. I'm still kinda experimenting some, I've never had a "pure" ranger before. My other ranger swings a THW.

Sniping is fairly pointless against critters, as far as hunting efficiency goes. An open aimer with the right STR stats would have 2 arrows in somethings eye before you hide and fire once.

Also if you train to snipe you're also training the skills you need for open aim--so being both is quite easy.
I disagree with PBRgui that sniping isn't beneficial. If you're playing in prime without access to a full wizard spellup I fully believe sniping is better than open-aiming. It especially fiercely pwns warcamps.

Notepad ++ is the best gui.
Charsettings and text setup screens or prompts with good instructions are just as effective if not more.
The only thing that sniping training and open training have in common is perception and ranged. Open simply frees up the ambushing tps which generate insignificant ranged AS imo.
Also, I don't warcamp. So no idea on that. Col 4 life yo.
