hi,

i just found this gemstone game and message board. is it worth a shot? i like text MMORPGs.. could someone link me to some interesting logs? also I found there's platinum which I ruled out due to the expense, and also prime and shattered. which one is better? deciding between the two.

Prime is your standard game that has roleplaying enforced - though it's a lot more lenient than it used to be in the days of glory. You have to follow strict(ish) naming guidelines and "stay in character." There's no talking about sports, computers, etc. There's also very little Player vs Player (PvP) due to the nature of the GMs. Shattered is more PvP, no roleplaying, and lots of scripting (afk time).

You can read the official games BBS as a guest without signing up, go to the Forums www.play.net/gs4 and browse.

I also recommend a prime account to start until you get a feel for the game.

wow thanks for these responses!

you mentioned Prime doesn't have much player vs. player. is the Shattered game risky or do you think I can get by?

I would agree with Askip. Starting with a basic prime account is probably a good idea. You'll get an idea for how the game works and then you can decide if you want to upgrade to premium or switch to one of the other two games: plat or shattered.

The game has kept me occupied for almost 15 fucking years.

Shattered seems a lot more fun.. just read some things in that thread. A lot of hatred though!

Shattered is a niche instance of the game whose population will eventually wither down to a point that puts possible interactions with other actual players, and not zombie AFK-bots, at a minimum.

There are others among us, who have been playing as long as Peam, who have the polar opposite view of the fate of Shattered. I was quitting GS for good, Shattered is the only reason I am still around and I am loving every minute of it. If you fall in with a good group there is always someone around to interact with. I can honestly say that I've had more interaction with other players in the past 3-4 months that Shattered has been going than I EVER had in all my years of Prime.

There is also the added bonus, because of the scripting allowances, that I have gotten much better at Ruby and am picking up GTK on the side.

Just my two cents...

I've been playing for a few years. I left for a while and came back because they started Shattered. Played shattered for a bit and it felt too much like WoW as far as RP went so went back to Premium.

Not saying it wasn't fun...still better than WoW IMO. I agree with what others have said though. Don't dive in to a more expensive account right off the bat. Try Prime and make sure it's your thing first.

VERY tempted to join Shattered. But, Prime does seem like more interaction. All KINDS of interaction! Just read the "sex in Gemstone folder." Interesting....

mmm well you have to pay for prime to play shattered, so why don't you just try them both? Or try prime first and see if you even like the idea of gemstone at all before paying extra for shattered.

I would play either Prime or Platinum. You play games like Gemstone for the roleplay, not for mechanics. There are games that do every other single aspect of "gaming" better than Gemstone, but few if any that can match the level of RP. Shattered HAS roleplay, but not nearly as much as Prime or Plat, and is not enforced nor staff supported. As such, any attempt at roleplay will suffer by comparison.

I would also suggest looking at the other Simutronics offering: Dragonrealms http://www.play.net/dr/ It is arguably a better supported game in terms of mechanical releases, staffing, and population. The differences are primarily in mechanics and documentation, but both games share the core theme of roleplay first.

Because everyone knows that Dragonrealms is terrible and the people who play it are complete failures in all aspects of life.
