I got a virus that I was unable to get rid of, and wound up reinstalling windows from the CD the computer came with. After the re-install I cannot use my microphone. The computer does not recognize any of the audio recording devices. Speakers work fine, headphone jack right next to the mic jack works.

I have tried all sorts of drivers and solutions to get it to work. But to no avail.

Can someone tell me how to get the computer to recognize the microphone jack?

Dell XPS 420, windows vista home 32bit system? If you want to help and need some more info, let me know.

Can the SM Bus Controller mess up the mic jack? it does not have the right drivers either, and I cannot find them, or the drivers for the ethernet controller.

Onboard sound is a pain in the dick. The SM bus controller is a dead end. I would pray that your chip is some variant of Realtek HD and blindly install this:
