I think I made this thread last year, but ohh well, lets do it again this year.

Who do you think will be the top 5 in the BCS this year? My picks:

1. Florida
2. Boise State
3. Ohio state
4. Alabama
5. Georgia Tech

I'll have a much better idea of where things stand after the Ohio State / Miami (Fl.) game next week. OSU looked pretty good against Marshall, though, and Pryor has really picked up his passing game.

Jax State made Nutt look like a jackass.

Auburn's offense looked incredible... but their defense this year is really hurt. Lots of youngins. A win is a win, I guess. Lots of promise in their new QB Cameron Newton.

Oregon and UT were stellar against shit-opponents.

UF looked like shit.

LSU looked decent even though their opponent was missing 8 starters.

ND looked eh against a shitty Big 10 team.

Ohio State look good, I have to admit.

We (Iowa) get Ohio State at home this year. Don't know if us beating them would put Iowa in top 5, but it'd likely bump Ohio State out.

Great ending. The VT defense kinda shit the bed.

VT is fairly consistently overranked, but I agree not as much as ND or even Ohio state.

Boise State may be an ultimate BCS buster this year. Their only decent game the rest of the season is Oregon State (fucking Beavers).

Ohio State ran the clock down and finished things up nicely. The game looked great in the first quarter, but Miami's offense couldn't make it past OSU's D, and they were plagued by important penalties and four interceptions. Only one real touchdown, with the other two off stellar kick returns (shame on OSU for allowing those, but UM's #3 is a hell of a runner), one field goal and one missed one. Pryor looked great, Harris, not so much, but the 'Shoe is a hard place to play.

Fun game to watch overall, though it lost momentum in the third.

Had to keep the pimp hand strong against this gay (literally) co-worker on Facebook who found it appropriate to compare UVA's loss against USC to VT's loss to JMU.

Posted the following:

I'm a fan of neither so here's a neutral breakdown.

UVA, a non-ranked team who no one expected anything out of this year, lost by 3 points to a team who is a perennial contender who were 21 point favorites. USC, by all rights, should have... blown them out.

Virginia Tech lost a game to an opponent who doesn't even play on the same 'level' of college football - this would be akin to a team from the CFL or AFL coming in to an NFL team's stadium and winning - on their home field. Vegas bookies didn't even bother creating a line for the game because it was expected to be so one-sided.

/END

I know the CFL/AFL thing may be a stretch, but I can't stand a Virginia Tech homer who not only never went to the school, but most likely has never set foot on the campus. Shit's rampant.

This was a preseason pick. There is still a lot of play to come. Basically, I predicted that Ohio State would be #1 going into the national title game with UF #2 and UF winning. Thus Boise and Alabama winning their bowl games and moving into their ranks.

Skeeter
09-12-2010, 12:52 PM
I'd move UF down, their offense is not the #1 team.
Boise needs to go down, VT is a huge fraud and their win means nothing now.

On a side note, my picks are meh. No way GT is gonna get ranked that high up. The only way Florida can win against Alabama is for Alabama to beat themselves. UF has the defense to make that happen and could really exploit any mistakes that Bama makes. Unlikely that Florida will get there, but it could happen.

Someone should make an inspirational poster with the MSU receiver screening two Irish defenders on that play. Brian Kelly called the correct defense for that fake, his players just got illegally screened.

Some friends and I were driving through rural Georgia one dark and rainy night on the way back from a fencing championship at Florida State. We needed to get gas, but miles of road stretched out in front of us with nary a sign for anything. Finally, as we rounded a bend, we saw a 24-hour gas-station sign appear in front of us and we pulled off. We got our gas and I went into the store to pay and buy some drinks. The hominid behind the counter spoke through its neck beard at me, but its language was guttural and brief. Even with my advanced linguistic capabilities, I could not decipher its meaning. It grunted something to its companion, or perhaps mate, which was notable for its lesser growth of neck hair, and while they debated the merits of God-only-knows, I snuck back out to the car and we tore out of the parking lot.

I'm still not sure whether we had entered the Twilight Zone, or a piece of land lost to time, that night in rural Georgia.

Honestly I was hoping for my Gators to do a bit better but not much this year. I was guessing they would break .500 by the end but who knows now.

NEW YORK — Foxsports.com is reporting that Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton had three instances of academic cheating while attending Florida and faced potential expulsion from the university.

Newton was arrested for the theft of a laptop from a Florida student's dorm room in November 2008. The website reported late Monday night that Newton again violated the university's honor code by putting his name on another student's paper and turning it in.

Newton then turned in a second paper to the instructor, but it was later found to have been purchased off the Internet.

His father, Cecil Newton Sr., declined comment to Foxsports.com.

"I wasn't there," the elder Newton said. "I cannot confirm or deny. At a time like this, I'm taking a defensive posture."

The NCAA is reviewing the recruitment of Newton.

A lot of the UF message board guys have been saying this for a while but this is the first time I've seen a major news source pick it up. This probably torpedoes his Heisman candidacy, especially after Reggie Bush. What I'm really curious was if UF/Meyers was sitting on this info until just about now when it would be perfect to leak it.

Makkah
11-09-2010, 11:53 PM
Yea, I'm not really worried about the academic shit. He has been clean since coming to Auburn. I'm worried about the alleged shopping. New "sources" on the MSU recruiting squad say that Cam turned them down because the money was too good at Auburn or some bullshit.

It all seems like a great plot to smear the dude before he can win a Heisman. It's tragic, honestly. If it's not true at all, there will be some major law suits, I'd imagine.

Two sources who recruit for Mississippi State said that Cecil Newton and his son, quarterback Cam Newton, said in separate phone conversations that his college choice would be part of a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.

Mississippi State compliance officials relayed the alleged conversations to Southeastern Conference compliance officials in January, according to two other sources close to the football program.

Prior to Newton's commitment to Auburn, one of the recruiters said Cecil Newton told him it would take "more than a scholarship" to bring his son to Mississippi State, a request the source said the school would not meet. Cecil Newton also referred the recruiter to a third person who would provide more specifics, the source said.

After Newton committed to Auburn, another source said an emotional Cam Newton phoned another recruiter to express regret that he wouldn't be going to Mississippi State, stating that his father, Cecil, had chosen Auburn for him because "the money was too much."

The NCAA is investigating allegations surrounding the Newtons in regards to the recruiting process. Cam Newton, who is having a Heisman-caliber season for No. 2 Auburn, declined comment.

Cecil Newton, who previously has denied any wrongdoing, did not respond to an e-mail request for comment Tuesday night.

However, when reached late Tuesday night by phone by FoxSports.com, Cecil Newton said he had no comment.

"I'm not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place," Cecil Newton said.

He also said he knew nothing about the report when asked if he'd seen it.

"I've answered what I need to answer," Cecil Newton told FoxSports.com. "If they're out there, go with it and make the decision or determination based on whatever you've got to say."

Cecil Newton also described all of the allegations about his son as "a witch hunt," according to FoxSports.com.

"They can continue doing whatever they're doing, sir," Cecil Newton told the website. "I'm just in support of my son."

Auburn did not respond to a request for comment. The school has repeatedly said it looked into Newton's recruitment and that he remains eligible.

Wednesday, Auburn coach Gene Chizik said: "I want to get off the table up front the fact that Cameron Newton will be playing Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs. I want to get that off the table. If there is anybody that has any questions that relate to this game Saturday, I'd love to entertain those questions only. Thank you."

After practice, Chizik remained silent on the subject.

"I know you guys have a job to do and I respect that, but my job right now is Georgia this weekend," Chizik told reporters. "I'll entertain questions that have to do with that, because that's where my focus is."

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said that he and his assistants are the only people on the Bulldogs' staff registered with the NCAA as recruiters, but he sidestepped other questions Wednesday about the latest allegation against Newton.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Mississippi State issued a statement clarifying when it contacted the SEC and when it turned over information. The school admitted that it called the SEC in January "regarding an issue relating to its recruitment of Cam Newton."

It said that the SEC asked for specific information, which the school didn't provide until July, however.

"Due to MSU dealing with ongoing and time-consuming eligibility issues involving non-football matters in the winter and spring of 2010, the specific SEC request went unfulfilled," the Mississippi State statement said. "Some additional information was provided to the SEC during July of 2010.

"Once the NCAA enforcement staff became involved, Mississippi State University cooperated fully with its investigation. MSU is confident the SEC office has managed this process consistent with its established procedures and the university is committed to the conference's ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with SEC and NCAA rules."

On Tuesday, Auburn found itself defending Newton in the wake of allegations of academic cheating when he was at Florida. The Tigers' coach, Gene Chizik, dismissed a FoxSports.com report as "pure garbage" in an emotional 4-minute, 25-second rant.

"I'm standing up here on a very important week trying to defend something that's garbage," Chizik said. Auburn faces Georgia on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Georgia coach Mark Richt said Newton's situation could become a distraction for his own team if the Bulldogs started worrying about whether Newton will, or won't, play.

"We really haven't tried to keep up with that at all," Richt said Wednesday. "I think it could be a distraction to us, so we're keeping our blinders on and studying the film and getting a plan and making sure that we're prepared for him being the quarterback. It could be a distraction for us also if we're an 'is he in, is he out' kind of thing. We're planning on him being in and we're preparing that way."

FoxSports.com reported Monday that Newton was caught cheating three times and was to appear for a hearing in front of Florida's Student Committee facing possible expulsion during the spring semester of 2009.

A person with knowledge of Newton's situation confirmed Newton left Florida after the fall 2008 semester rather than face suspension or expulsion, in part due to the allegations of academic wrongdoing, The New York Times reported on Wednesday.

Newton's father said he could not confirm or deny the report, citing a gag order from his attorney, The Times reported. "I don't know what's in his personal file, but if someone is bold enough to post something like that, there will be consequences," he said.

Newton transferred to Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas, where he played last season. He declined to discuss the latest report, which came on the heels of former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond telling ESPN.com that someone claiming to represent the Newton family sought money during his recruitment by the school.

Sources told ESPN.com the man who said he was representing the Newtons was Kenny Rogers, who played in the 1980s for Mississippi State alongside Bond.

"I'm not going to entertain something that took place not three months, not six months, not a year but two years ago," Cam Newton said. "I'm not going to sit up here and say anything about it, whether I did or did not do it, because I don't want to beat a dead horse talking about it. It's not going to affect me any way, shape or fashion."

On Wednesday, Cleveland Browns rookie cornerback Joe Haden, Newton's roommate at Florida, said Newton isn't worried about the allegations being leveled against him.

Haden, who lived with Newton for 1½ years and considers his former roommate his best friend, said he spoke with Newton on the phone for an hour on Tuesday night.

Haden said Newton "is not letting this stuff get to him too much. He said, 'Joe, I got a plan and everything is going to work out for the best.'"

Haden believes Newton is being targeted only because he's playing so well this season.

In Gainesville, Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement that neither he nor anyone on his staff leaked information on Newton's academic record, calling it a "ridiculous claim."

"For anyone to think that I or anyone on our staff may have leaked information about private student records to the media doesn't know us very well," Meyer said. "It's a ridiculous claim and simply not true."

Cam Newton said Meyer was a man of integrity.

"I would hope he wouldn't say anything like that," he said.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who also recruited Newton out of Blinn, said he saw "nothing at all" out of the ordinary during that process.

"Our recruitment of Cameron could not have been better, or was just fine," Stoops said. "I didn't notice anything and none of our coaches did as we were recruiting him.".

You might want to check that. First of all... it's Chizik... second of all, it was Jay Jacobs, Auburn's Athletic Director (you may know that as AD), that said "No Comment."

He's notorious for doing so, and it's likely because they've only commented 87 times on this whole garbage. The SEC Commish says there is no reason Cam Newton would be ineligible. This is all MSU's fault. They've been dragging their feet since fucking January, and it's likely they're gonna get smoked by the NCAA.

Say it with me now, Mosquito... "The Coach is NOT the AD."

Makkah
11-13-2010, 12:55 AM
The current BTS (behind the scenes) idea is that Cam's father (without Cam or his mother's knowledge) was approached by MSU's "recruiters" and entertained the idea. He then later contacted said "recruiters" which may or may not be coaches (although technically only coaches can recruit players). The fact that the main source of all this controversy is already under investigation for claiming he's an agent (without being an agent) is really the main irritation.

(behind the scenes)

Skeeter

According to some CFB "expert" on Rome. (Can't remember who) If Cecil Newton solicited funds even w/o Cam's knowledge it's still a recruiting violation.

So now that we're all on board with the idea that a violation of NCAA recruiting rules took place the argument will be: can Cam's father take the fall for this without Cam receiving any penalty? I significantly doubt that.

I think what we're all holding our breath for is what that penalty is. Not being able to win the award because of bad press is pretty minor in comparison to being ruled unable to play for X number of games considering where we are in the season

Makkah

Another year of punching myself in the dick. Goooo Miami.

Gonna be a sore pp.

USF 23 Miami 20

Miami's QB really ate shit on that final INT in regulation.

If there are 5 BCS bowls, they should be filled with the top 10 ranked teams. Just saying... Increase you end up with teams not from the top 10 getting in, and teams in the top 10 playing capital one.

Lots of money lost from Bowl-Conference alignments means it won't happen.

Good idea, but won't happen.

They should at least yank the Big East's AQ spot. Hell, yank ACC while you're at it.

I hope not. I think the Big Ten is safe from UofM as long as Dick Rod is there.

god damn I love the annual beat down of Bichigan.

I think Dick Rod gets fired if a slam dunk coach like Harbaugh wants the job. Otherwise they give him the 4th year since that's the last year of his contract. If he doesn't show dramatic improvement (ie. win the big10 and beat OSU) then he's gone.

does an LSU loss mean only 1 SEC team makes a BCS game?

Yes, unless South Carolina beats Auburn. It's time for Les Miles to move on, although I don't know who LSU can get after firing a 10 win coach. Hopefully Mettenburger comes to Baton Rouge next year.

ah man I love the hat. I hope he stays forever. Even when he loses games he wins. His ridiculous luck is awesome.

I suppose R-Kansas could go to the sugar now. Assuming of course Auburn wins.

If Brotzman doesn't hang himself by March, I'll offer to assist him. Classy team to stick by him, though. Jay Feely must be jealous.

Yeah I was there. I'm just hopeful that it was the final nail in Randy Shannon's coffin.

A bunch of local media is reporting that Randy Shannon has been fired. The hot rumour is Jon Gruden to Miami, but if you've followed coaching changes you know how fluid these things are.

I really wanted the guy to succeed, he was a great player here, won an NC. He did a great job recruiting, we have had no kids in trouble since he arrived, we have all the talent in the world but they have not been developed and that was his flaw. These guys were coming in with incredible HS talent and not getting better. I'm sad it didn't work out.

He'd be an excellent private school coach, he keeps his kids in line and recruits well.

The only problem with Shannon is that he fucking blows as a coach. He'd probably make a good guidance counselor or something. Like Drew said, he brought in some ridiculously talented kids...and didn't do anything with them.

Still can't believe Alabama lost to Auburn. Alabama has always been a heavy 4th quarter team. It is usually Auburn that outscores Alabama in the first quarter during the Iron Bowl. I was sadface.

I hope not. I think the Big Ten is safe from UofM as long as Dick Rod is there.

His only plus has been D-Robinson who can int-away a game.

The primarily problem is that the coach seems to anticipate that he can just outscore Big 10 teams to beat them, undervaluing the role that defense plays in controlling/winning games.

Cam Newton cleared and ruled eligible by the NCAA.

A "violation of amateurism" occurred, Cam was ruled ineligible yesterday by Auburn, the NCAA reinstated his eligibility today as long as his father and that shithead agent associated with MSU are cut off from athletic departments.

Let the hating begin.

Yeah, methinks that if similar "allegations" had surfaced during Reggie Bush's rise to prominence as opposed to well after they could have had "violations of amateurism" instead of having the USC football program implode.

Makkah

That's what USC gets for not coming clean from the get-go like Auburn has done. Auburn has known about all of this since at least June and has worked alongside the NCAA to figure this shit out.

Oh and the fact that USC paid the shit out of his family while Auburn hasn't given a cent.

I think it's great he's off the hook. If Auburn wasn't #2 he'd have been suspended though. No one else is more deserving of the Heisman than Newton. Not like he's a pioneer in the pay-for-play business of NCAA sports.

Does that satisfy you?

I think Athlete's should be paid anyway... You'd have to find a way to do it, maybe scholarship athlete's only? Maybe it's need based only? They don't have time to have jobs and some people's families can't afford to even provide them with spending cash.... Tough situation.

I'm not talking big bucks... but maybe they'd get $100 or $200 a month... something to give them a little cash in their pockets.
