Looking to start playing online a little here and there again. But I'm really at a loss as to what titles are out there to try now. Gave DDO a go, got bored. Simutronic Titles are out of the question. Runes of Magic and Vanguard, were interesting but no thanks.
Basically, I'm looking for a fairly in depth, non-awkward or clunky, highly magic based/involved rpg. Anyone have any ideas? Don't care if I have to pay for it or not. IE a good game to play a mage/sorcerer/necromancer/bringer of all doom kind of toon.
PS: Turn based = Crap

Is Inferno still running?

Another good game to try is called 2029. Also free to play. One of if not the best free MMORPG's I have ever played.
Here's the link to their website: http://2029.igg.com/

Don't think it is. I know it had shut down once and then someone was going to try to get it running again but I don't think it happened.

I don't know how high you got in DDO, but the spells only start getting good around level 7 for a wizard from a bringer of doom perspective. The class fundamentally changes when you get Wall of Fire.

Inferno is still up in a sort of unofficial capacity, I think. Not sure if development even occurs anymore, and I don't know how many players they have, if any. Their website is up at http://www.infernalworlds.com, and you can access the game at port 6777 on infernalworlds.com (the "Play Now" link on their website doesn't seem to work). The most recent forums for the game are here: http://exinferno.lefora.com/

Well, my current MMO is Lord of the Rings Online. It follows the WoW model pretty closely, but manages to carve out its own identity with some pretty interesting twists on the traditional class roles. It's also one hell of a beautiful world to explore. It's going Free-to-Play this fall.

Farn made a cool game but it's still in development. Not sure if he is still doing it. I had fun with it!
There is a thread in here somewhere with the port info.

lvl 20 wizard, reincarnated back into a wizard w/ a 32 pt build then leveled back up to 20 with all three lvls of pale master. so yeah know that deal fairly well. and yeah after 15th lvl all you need is FoD and WoF and game over. Loved the carnage and the visual depth that went into DDO but it really felt like playing a magical grand theft auto more then anything else and the whole two spell end game got really freak'n boring.

RF Online was pretty fun back in the day, even if it was an epic grindfest.
NeoSteam, while iffy, is a moderately clean steampunk-genre MMO that will waste a decent chunk of time. It's basically a rune/socket equipment system with the usual +1 upgrades and all, with 'steam engines' to provide assorted effects replacing said runes. Twinking is the big draw there, for me (stealth + a sword with an endgame steam engine 1-hitting six members of the opposing faction simultaneously is just plain awesome), but the depth involved is fairly decent.
LotRO was fun. The Old Republic looks solid for your future options, and old flagbearers like Ultima Online and Ragnarok still exist in several different forms.
I've not enjoyed a non-Simutronics MUD, probably due to the lack of structure. I'm not much for code entry or scripting, so pretty much every obscure MUD is out on that basis alone. Even the other structured, user-friendly ones (for instance: Iron Realms crap) are still lacking on several fronts, and seem too cut-and-dry for my taste.

I've been playing ArcticMUD for several years now. It's a Dragonlance themed MUD and has a pretty evolved code base for a Diku-variant. At present they are splitting the Mage class into three separate classes; White Robe, Red Robe, and Black Robe to stay true to the game world itself.
The game periodically "wipes" the playerbase, and we are at present about 3/4ths of the way through the current Wipe. At the beginning of any given restart, average concurrent players is somewhere between 80-120. At this late stage of the wipe it varies between 15-30.

Looks pretty interesting. Any good websites to break it down except the official?

FFXIV comes out in a few weeks.
Fixed.
I myself am considering playing this one, despite my distinct disatisfaction with every other MMO I've ever played (including FFXI).

Thanks. Roman Numerals FTL.
I've actually pre-ordered. Open beta has started for anyone interested.

The Old Republic doesn't look that interesting to me, the combat looks absolutely boring.

You mean the non-open open beta that I've been trying to join for the last 3 days?
I pre-ordered the collectors edition though, so if I don't get to break it before then, I'll be sure to break it on the 22nd.

The wipes for DR...how does that work? Like everyone plays through a story line until they die or something so that there is like one party to finish the game?

Yeah, I got in. I'm unfortunately very displeased with the choppy/laggy nature of it at present. It makes it difficult to enjoy. I'm hoping the sales release will be a little more smooth.
